"This is the way for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the destruction of suffering and grief, for reaching the right path, for the attainment of Nibbana, namely, the four foundations of mindfulness." With these words, the Buddha taught the direct path for alleviating suffering and discovering wisdom, compassion and peace. In these four daylongs taught by NYI teachers this teaching of liberation will be explored. These Four Foundations of Mindfulness will be employed in developing awareness in meditation as well as the integration and manifestation of these areas into all aspects of life.

In the first daylong, George Pitagorsky will explore mindfulness of body as a vehicle for awakening. In the second, Charmaine Henderson will bring attention to the realm of feeling tones that point the way to non reactive presence in the face of pleasant, unpleasant and neutral feelings, which are constantly appearing in our lives. In the third day, Sandra Weinberg will point to the way of developing a wise relationship to emotions and mental states. In the fourth daylong, Gina Sharpe will explore the fourth foundation—dhammas, mind-objects, which may be teachings or hindrances, and can become the focus of attention to support awakening.

Sandra Weinberg is a co-founder and member of the Board of Directors of NYI. She has studied the Dharma and practiced mindfulness meditation for over 30 years and is a graduate of the first Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Program.  She is a psychotherapist in private practice in New York City.
