Haiti Relief Organizations
Dear Friends of NYI,
In the second week since the earthquake that devastated the Haitian capital of Port-Au-Prince, when the number of casualties and the loss of homes is still not fully known, we at NYI remain heartbroken by the events. Like many other communities around the world devoted to mindfulness and to the practice of compassion, we struggle to grasp the magnitude of the disaster and its impact on the personal lives of the Haitian people as well as on the foundation of the country as a whole. At the same time we are also able to draw some solace and inspiration from hearing about the dedicated relief effort and the individuals—aid workers as well as many civilians—who in the face of the wreckage choose to extend their hand in service.
Because this is a tragedy of almost unimaginable scale, we found it important to consciously attempt to relate to the suffering of the Haiti people not as a news story, but with the immediacy we would feel if it happened in our midst. In the past days we have been searching for reliable channels to provide support for the victims. Following is a suggested list of organizations committed to the relief effort.
