In one of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, meditation is taught in two stages. The first is deliberate mindfulness, which includes one-pointed focus and nonjudgmentally observing the changing contents of our mind and body. The second part is called effortless mindfulness, not because no initial effort is made, but because of the discovery of an awareness that is already awake and able to focus effortlessly.
We can begin with deliberate mindfulness as a good foundation, or start with effortless mindfulness. In this evening we will learn how to unhook awareness from thinking and have it turn around to be aware of awake awareness. Rather than meditating to calm and focus your mind, we will learn to intentionally shift into awake awareness, which is already calm, stable, and able to effortlessly focus. This is a shift from a separate sense of self to an empty yet embodied awareness-based way of seeing and being.
