We will screen this short film and include a lively conversation with the film’s director Susan Weiser Finley and Tracy Dennis-Tiwary\, PhD\, professor in the Psychology Department of Hunter College. \nThis is a real story of remarkable change in a group of young people. Concord High\, in Staten Island\, NY\, is called a ‘transfer school’ — a last hope\, last chance to graduate high school for teens. Most of its students have histories of academic failure and trauma. The film Changing Minds at Concord High School follows these students over the course of one semester as they take part in a mindfulness-training program. The amazing twist here is that the students both helped to film the experience and conduct a scientific study of their classmates – comparing the effects of mindfulness training with that of a placebo group. The study also included a science curriculum on the neuroscience of mindfulness – how it can change our brains for the better. \nTracy Dennis-Tiwary\, PhD\, professor in the psychology Department of Hunter College was the lead scientist on this project\, so the students were her “research assistants.” Inspired by the concept of ‘neuroplasticity\,’ – that you can change the brain’s neural pathways and synapses through repeated new experiences – the young researchers posed the question: Would mindfulness practice for just three minutes a day help them and their peers? \nRegistration:\n \nNote About Registration:\nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. The Perplexed Buddhist’s Guide to Meditative Absorption DESCRIPTION:Who’s Afraid of Jhana? The Perplexed Buddhist’s Guide to Meditative Absorption\n \nwith Bodhipaksa\n \nSaturday\, February 23rd\, 2019 | 10:00am – 5:00pm\n \n\n \nJhana\, or meditative absorption\, is traditionally regarded as a crucial part of Buddhist practice. “This is the path to Awakening\,” were the Buddha’s words\, shortly before his Enlightenment as he remembered a childhood experience of meditative absorption. The calmness\, the vibrant embodied pleasure\, and the heart-felt joy of jhana are described over and over again in the scriptures. And yet few people believe in their capacity to experience these states\, and assume that it can only happen on months-long retreats—and perhaps only for other people! \nBut what if it’s not hard? What if it’s all a matter of knowing how? What if it’s just a question of bringing together a few relatively simple approaches to meditation that lead\, step-by-step\, toward a state of deep\, easeful joy? \nOn this day-long workshop Bodhipaksa will introduce a three-stage approach to meditation that he’s developed in over the last 20 years\, helping us to calm the mind\, to enter deeply into a relaxed yet vibrant experience of the body\, and to bring joy to the heart. As we follow this path we’ll start to see how it is that jhana is a basis for insight\, and why the Buddha recognized that jhana is the path to Awakening. \nBodhipaksa can’t guarantee that you’ll have a jhanic experience on the retreat\, but he is confident you’ll notice a distinct shift in that direction\, and that you’ll come away with the tools to take you the rest of the way. \nRegistration:\n \nThe registration fee includes teacher support. If you wish to give more in addition to the registration fee\, the total (registration fees and additional contributions) will be shared between NYI and the teacher(s). \nNote About Registration:\nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. We are sorry for any inconvience. For those who already registered\, we will be reaching out to you via email.\n \n“If you or someone you know is at risk of dying one day\, you should come to this workshop.” –Former Participant \nMost of us avoid thoughts of dying until we lose a loved one or come close to dying ourselves. But\, by combining insight practices and discussion\, we can learn how the secret of living and the secret of dying are the same: learning to be in the present moment\, letting go of fear\, and becoming more loving and compassionate. \nJoin us for this Daylong Retreat to learn how meditation and mindfulness can help you on the one journey we all take: our own personal journey through life to the common end in death. We are all in this together\, on a parallel journey of finding meaning and eventually releasing meaning as we die. The day will be a mix of talks\, meditation and practices with being present with life as it is. \nThe registration fee includes teacher support. But before our attention stabilizes\, practice can be overstimulating. \nThis talk will explore the process through which the mind comes to rest. In developing this steadiness\, equanimity (the capacity to fully permit the flow of both pleasure and pain) is a vital skill. \nWe will see how concentration and equanimity reinforce each other and support a deeper understanding of ourselves. And how this stability\, in turn\, makes space for the heart to respond with joy and compassion. \nThis evening program will include a 45 minute guided meditation\, a dharma talk on the above subject and time for community and discussion. Practitioners of all skill levels are welcome! \nRegistration:\n \nNote About Registration:\nThe registration fee includes teacher support. Like the sign in a Thai monastery reminds me many years ago: “Relax. In 100 years\, all new people!” However caught up we may get in the drama and details of our own preoccupations\, we will all soon be dust\, all the richness of our lives reduced to that little line between our date of birth and date of death. \nDespite this vast view though\, which allows us to take ourselves less seriously\, we also find that each moment counts. Each gesture\, each action\, each word. How we treat ourselves\, and others\, and the world around us\, defines us moment by moment. “My view is as spacious as the wide open sky”\, said Padmasambhava famously\, “but my attention to karma is as fine as grains of flour.” \nIn this daylong retreat at NY Insight\, Martin Aylward will explore the apparent paradox of a vast view combined with a fine attention\, along with practices to bring both into focus. How do we hold both simultaneously? How can we be responsive\, without feeling responsible? How might we bring both a vast view and a fine attention to both our inner practices\, and to our outer engagement\, whether in our personal lives or in response to the ecological\, political and social crises in which we currently find ourselves. \nThe registration fee includes teacher support. If you wish to give more in addition to the registration fee\, the total (registration fees and additional contributions) will be shared between NYI and the teacher(s). \nRegistration:\n \nNote About Registration:\nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. The noble truth of suffering is not the same as ordinary unpleasantness and holds the promise of more profound well-being than the simple escape from pain. Shifting from an abstract conception of suffering to exploring the detailed experiences of mind and body accessed through insight meditation\, this day-long workshop examines the texts and practices of early Buddhism that bring out a more nuanced understanding of suffering and its cessation. Insight into suffering enables letting go of wanting things to be different than they are\, accessing the wisdom of being with things just as they are. \nThe Three Characteristics\nIn classical Buddhist tradition meditation is not an end in itself\, but a means of accessing wisdom. Mindfulness meditation is meant to lead to insight into the three characteristics of experience\, namely impermanence\, suffering\, and non-self. This three-part program examines each of these in turn\, emphasizing how each is encountered\, not theoretically\, but in the moment-to-moment flow of the mind and body. The program consists of lecture\, discussion\, and meditation practice. Beginners will find the language and the practices accessible\, while experienced meditators will be guided towards the deeper meaning of insight meditation. The Three Characteristics teachings will be offered as three daylong workshops (Saturdays: February 9\, March 16\, April 13\, 2019) perfect as a series to deepen your practice or complete teachings as standalone daylong workshops so feel free to take one\, two or all three. \nRegistration:\n \nThe registration fee includes teacher support. One possible answer is to take refuge in the power of wakefulness\, in the Buddha’s teachings and in the community dedicated to harmony and awareness. This is traditionally known as taking refuge in the Three Gems: the Buddha\, the dharma and the sangha. \nIn this daylong we’ll investigate how taking refuge can support us on this path of wisdom and love. His practice of the Wheel of Awareness brings together many skillful and wise elements of meditation\, all rolled into one.” \n—Jack Kornfield\, author and Insight Meditation Teacher\n \nJoin Dr Daniel Siegel\, the internationally acclaimed author\, award-winning educator\, and child psychiatrist for a special benefit event for New York Insight. \nIn this evening workshop\, we will explore and experience the ways in which our inner subjective lives\, our interpersonal relationships\, and our objective empirical knowledge can be woven together to illuminate the importance for meaning\, connection\, and equanimity in our lives. \nDr Siegel will present his acclaimed new Wheel of Awareness meditation practice\, a life-changing tool for cultivating more focus\, presence\, and peace in one’s day-to-day life\, which teaches us how to harness the power of the principle: “Where attention goes\, neural firing flows\, and neural connection grows.” \nHe will reveal how developing a Wheel of Awareness practice to focus attention\, open awareness\, and cultivate kind intention can literally help you grow a healthier brain and reduce fear\, anxiety\, and stress in your life. \nWe will also explore the notion that the mind may be an “emergent process” that arises from energy and information flow. Seeing the mind this way will help us illuminate the nature of consciousness and the central role of being aware\, of being present in life. Linking differentiated elements into a coherent whole is what integration is—and integration may be at the heart of well-being. \nAll ticket purchases will go to support the New York Insight Meditation Center. \nRegistration:\n \nThe registration fee includes teacher support. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, yoga\, and inquiry as a way of training people to relate differently to stresses in their lives and in fact\, relate differently to each moment of their lives. Each class includes various “formal” meditation practices\, mindful movement and discussion/inquiry exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress. Class size ranges from 15 – 30 participants. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of formal meditation daily as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nMethods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450\nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need for other NYI offerings. It is important when considering this class to make sure your schedule allows you to attend all 8 sessions\, though if a class is missed there are usually concurrent classes which allow for make-up sessions. \nWe currently do not have any MBSR financial assistance at this time. \nOrientation Session:\nThursday\, April 4th\, 2019\, 6:30pm-9pm\nOrientation Location: NYIMC 28 West 27th Street\, 10th Floor\nPlease note that attendance is required at the orientation session.
