Origami + Mindfulness Afternoon Group

Origami, the traditional Japanese art of paper folding, can be a creative way of practicing mindfulness. If engaged in mindfully, origami can be an active complement to formal sitting meditation practice. Take an hour out of your busy week to sit and do one thing: fold paper.

The benefits of engaging in this seemingly simple activity are far greater than you might think. This is because neuroscience has discovered that origami engages both sides of your brain. Our brains have a creative, expressive side and a logical, orderly side. Folding origami gives us a chance to engage with both sides of our brain simultaneously!

Sitting down to fold origami together as a group offers us a chance to focus our attention on creating something step-by-step. We hone our attention to detail as we press each fold, and then follow it up with the next fold in a sequence. The way sequencing is built into origami means it can help to improve our memory. We use our hands, our fingers, and our fingertips to fold. Folding origami keeps fine motor skills sharp.

Don’t feel like you’re the creative type? That’s OK! Origami is for everyone. You do not need any artistic skill to participate, just two hands and a beginner’s mind. Origami paper will be provided each week.

Drop-in and no registration required. You are welcome to attend any or all of the sessions.

Suggested donations of $10 to NYI are welcome.

paul singleton iii , MA, ATR is a multidisciplinary artist whose work brings together poetry, book making, and origami as methods of contemplative inquiry. He has been meditating regularly since 1996. A student of origami master toshiko kobayashi, paul brings kobayashi’s Expressive Origami method together with mindful breathing to offer workshops that will complement sitting practice.
