SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Queer Eye(s) on the Precepts
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Queer Eye(s) on the Precepts \nwith Leslie Booker\, Jay Michaelson\, and Jacoby Ballard \nFour Tuesday evening classes plus a Saturday half-day retreat\nEvening Classes: Tuesdays\, February 17th\, March 17th\, May 12th\, and June 16th 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\nHalf-Day Retreat: Saturday\, April 18th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\nSign up for the full course\, a single session\, or anything in-between! \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nThe Five Precepts form the foundation of Buddhist ethics in the insight tradition. Yet for queer people in 21st century America\, they can also be a little…. fraught. What counts as “sexual misconduct” (if that’s even the right term to use)? Do all drugs “lead to confusion”? What counts as “harsh language” in a culture that is often serving tea? \nIn this 5 month series\, we’re going to take an honest\, deep\, and participatory dive into the precepts. We’ll explore where they serve us\, and where they may not. We’ll work with the complexities that come with any 2500-year-old tradition\, particularly one which often promotes monasticism as an ideal. \nThere will be a ½ day retreat mid way through the course\, and we’ll also have the opportunity to meet in small groups and with a teacher in between the monthly sessions for support to deepen our personal understanding and to cultivate spiritual friendships. \nUltimately\, we hope to arrive at multiple ways of navigating ethics and community together. (And since we take an expansive definition of queerness\, you’re welcome to join if that word speaks to your experience.) \nDescriptions for each class session appear below. You are welcome to sign up for the full course\, or for individual sessions. \nClass 1 – Protecting Life (Tuesday\, Feb. 17\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nBeyond “not killing”\, what might it look like to protect life and cultivate non-harming (including non-self-harm) in our violent\, oppressive and extractive society? \nClass 2 – Cultivating Generosity (Tuesday\, March 17\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nHow can queer communities cultivate generosity\, mutual aid\, and collective care in a society built on commerce (and theft)? How might this be expressed in creating cultures of belonging? \nClass 3/Half-Day Retreat – The One about Sex (Saturday\, April. 18\, 10:00am – 1:00pm ET)\nWhat does it mean to engage in sexual relationships ethically? How do queer relationship structures and practices – including polyamory\, kink\, open relationships\, asexuality\, and periods of celibacy – fit within the precepts? How do we lovingly navigate relationships with exes and former lovers in often tightly-knit communities? \nClass 4 – Skillful Speech (Tuesday\, May 12\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nWhat does “right speech” look like in communities where accountability is important\, in which conflict is not abuse\, and yet where harm can still be done by harmful or hurtful speech\, by gossip\, or even by idle chatter? \nClass 5 – What is an intoxicant? (Tuesday\, June 16\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nQueer people have a wide variety of relationships (often fraught) toward substances. What might healthy relationships to substances look like? What forms of substance use block the heart from belonging to one other\, and what might empower it? Other than substances\, what intoxicants might we encounter in our lives (e.g. dating apps\, social media)? \n \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for the full course or individual sessions. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and all additional contributions will go to the class’s teachers.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Imprints & Triggers - How Karma Works
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Imprints & Triggers – How Karma Works \nwith David Nichtern \nTuesdays\, April 14th and 21st\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nHave you ever noticed how\, in the moment\, somebody can say or do something that seems to dramatically shift your state of mind\, causing you to experience a sudden surge in irritation\, grasping or zoning out? \nThese workshops trace karma as the subtle residue of thoughts\, words\, and actions: imprints that settle in the mind\, and the triggers that awaken them\, pulling us into automatic responses without our conscious awareness. \nBased on the highly nuanced Buddhist teachings of Abhidharma\, through mindfulness and awareness techniques\, we will track this process – developing the capacity to see\, in real time\, how karmic patterns are created\, and how they pull us into unnecessary suffering within our own mind and in relation to our interactions with others. \nJoin teacher David Nichtern for this special two-part series! Workshops will include meditation instruction and practice\, lectures\, discussion and breakout groups. All levels welcome. \nNote: This program will be recorded\, and the recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Becoming a Master Gardener of Your Heart and Mind
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Becoming a Master Gardener of Your Heart and Mind \nPart 1: Recognizing the weeds – exploring the Five Hindrances \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, March 23rd – April 27th (skips April 20th)\, 2026 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nNo matter what you may think about “meditation\,” it is\, at its core\, a cultivation of the mind and heart. And just as in cultivating a garden\, we must learn to distinguish the weeds from the flowers (or vegetables!)\, in our formal and life practices our task is to discern what mind states are harmful and what states support a life of contentment and freedom. \nOftentimes\, practitioners focus only on getting rid of the weeds and neglect actually learning how to cultivate the beautiful\, thus missing out on learning that cultivating the beautiful discourages the growth of the weeds. There is no need to get rid of all of the weeds before cultivating the crops. (Think of companion planting\, for those of you who garden!) \nIn this\, the first part of this series\, we will learn to identify the “weeds” — known as the Five Hindrances. These are: craving\, aversion\, restlessness and worry\, sleepiness and dullness\, and doubt. \nIn the second part of the series\, we will learn how to cultivate more wholesome qualities – the flowers and vegetables that nourish the heart and mind. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Queer Eye(s) on the Precepts
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Queer Eye(s) on the Precepts \nwith Leslie Booker\, Jay Michaelson\, and Jacoby Ballard\, assisted by Steph McIsaac \nFour Tuesday evening classes plus a Saturday half-day retreat\nEvening Classes: Tuesdays\, February 17th\, March 17th\, May 12th\, and June 16th 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\nHalf-Day Retreat: Saturday\, April 18th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\nSign up for the full course\, a single session\, or anything in-between! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: When the Worldly Winds Blow - Resilience in Times of Stress\, Fear\, and Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: When the Worldly Winds Blow – Resilience in Times of Stress\, Fear\, and Uncertainty \nwith David Grogan \nTuesdays\, March 17th – April 7th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn these tumultuous times\, fear and uncertainty magnify the perception that we are being blown about by circumstances beyond our control. The Buddha\, who also lived during an era of alarming social discord\, called the volatile forces that unsettle hearts and minds the Eight Worldly Winds: gain and loss\, praise and blame\, status and shame\, pleasure and pain. Join our four-week course and cultivate a greater capacity to weather the blustery stresses of modern life\, as well as find stability and clarity in the eye of a superstorm. \nEach week\, through foundational meditation practices\, explore how to anchor your attention and face difficult emotions without being consumed by them. In paired dialogues and group discussion\, practice speaking and listening from mindfulness and compassion\, transforming habitual reactions into opportunities for connection and insight. Weekly journaling prompts will help map the winds as they show up in daily life and dismantle patterns of reactivity. \nEveryone is welcome\, regardless of previous meditation experience. Learn how to hold your seat amid the centrifugal energy of the eight worldly winds and meet a precarious world with wisdom and an unshaken heart. \nSpots are very limited\, so register early to ensure your access to these teachings! \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Five Spiritual Powers
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Five Spiritual Powers \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, January 26th – March 2nd (skips President’s Day\, February 16th)\, 2026 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n\nNote: due to the severe winter weather forecast\, the first session of this course (January 26th) will take place online only. \nIn a time of what seems like constant stress and confusion\, many of us feel vastly under-resourced—like we might not have what it takes to face each day. But each of us have within us the capacity to develop lasting resources that we can call on in challenging times. These resources are known as the Five Spiritual Powers\, sometimes called the Five Spiritual Faculties\, and consist of Faith (Confidence)\, Energy (Courage)\, Mindfulness\, Collectedness (Concentration)\, and Wisdom. All of us\, no matter our background or experiences\, possess the seeds of what is needed to nurture these qualities within ourselves. \nOver the course of this five week course\, we’ll investigate all five of the spiritual powers\, first learning how to notice where and when they are present and not present. \nWith the help of teacher Elaine Retholtz\, you’ll work on cultivating these skillful qualities of mind and uprooting the tendencies that cloud the mind and heart. \nTogether we’ll discover how to incorporate awareness of the five spiritual powers into our meditation practice and our daily lives. These special qualities of mind lead us to greater degrees of freedom from our habitual habits and reactivity. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Online: The Sure Heart - Emotion\, Healing\, and Buddhist Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Sure Heart – Emotion\, Healing\, and Buddhist Psychology \nwith Sean Oakes\, PhD \nThursdays\, October 23rd – November 20th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET \n \nCan meditation and mindfulness support us in our emotional life? Absolutely. The Buddha’s teaching is frequently understood as a kind of psychology\, or science of mind\, and the core of the Dhamma is a set of teachings on how to work with the strong habitual emotions and energies that lead to harmful action. The result of practice is not an abstract metaphysical wisdom but a profound happiness and peace that is called “the sure heart’s release.” This release naturally includes a healing of old wounds and a restoration of healthy relating with ourselves and others. \nIn this 5-week course we’ll look at the Buddha’s teachings on emotion and healing\, exploring how to bring mindfulness\, insight\, and skillful response to powerful states like love\, fear\, anger\, and grief. This is the fourth in a series of practice and study courses aimed to build a strong foundation for Theravāda Buddhist training. You do not have to have taken the other courses in the series to take this one\, and beginners are welcome. \nWe will read original texts from the Pāli Canon as the source of our meditation instructions\, and weave in supporting material from contemporary neuroscience and psychology. Each week we will meditate together\, read passages from the discourses\, and support each other in building or deepening a daily meditation practice. You will come away with deepened skill in Buddhist mindfulness\, and a framework for bringing the discernment of spiritual inquiry into every part of your life. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Path to Freedom from Habitual Worry\, Reactivity\, and Obsession
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Path to Freedom from Habitual Worry\, Reactivity\, and Obsession \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, October 20th – December 8th\, 2025 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n\nIn the Four Noble Truths\, the Buddha pointed to the Eightfold Path as one way out of dukkha\, (often translated as unsatisfactoriness\, vulnerability\, or suffering) leading to complete freedom (nibbana). What is this path? \nThe Eightfold Path is often viewed as a kind of prescription or instruction manual: if I do this\, or if I behave this way\, I will suffer less. But as we look closer\, we begin to see this teaching as not just a way out of feeling bad\, but a profoundly ethical framework that unlocks a life of non-harming\, connection\, access to joy\, and contentment. It is a path that touches every aspect of our lives and relationships. \nThis path can help us get free from our habitual emotional reactions and cultivate a more wholesome\, engaged approach to life. \nIn this eight-week program\, we will explore how the Eightfold Path can be a source of groundedness\, clarity\, and direction that is available at all times. Together we’ll examine all 8 limbs of the path: Right or appropriate View\, Intention\, Speech\, Action\, Livelihood\, Effort\, Mindfulness\, and Collectedness. \nJoin New York Insight teacher Elaine Retholtz to learn what it means to practice these ancient teachings in the modern world. \nThis program is open to all—no prior study or experience required. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. How do we integrate these teachings into daily life? \nThe Four Noble Truths—one of the Buddha’s first teachings—offer a structured yet flexible guide for cultivating wisdom and ethical living in a way that is both practical and transformative. These teachings can actually be reframed as the Four Ennobling Truths. \nAs we investigate their applicability to our lives\, we quickly see how they can lead to a profound sense of freedom from our habitual worries\, emotional reactions\, and obsessions. As Buddhist monk Ajahn Sumedho taught\, “Our practice is not to follow the heart; it is to train the heart.” \nIn this four-week program\, we will explore how the Four Noble Truths can be a source of groundedness\, clarity\, and direction\, even when we are experiencing internal or external chaos. \nJoin teacher Elaine Retholtz to learn what it means to practice these ancient teachings in the modern world. \nThis program is open to all—no prior study or experience required. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness and the Middle Way - Cultivating an Authentic Dharma
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness and the Middle Way – Cultivating an Authentic Dharma \nwith Dave Smith and Stephen Batchelor \nTuesdays\, June 3rd – June 24th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n  \nMany people experience the benefits of a regular meditation practice\, but what does it truly mean to “wake up”? And how do we integrate these teachings into our daily lives—especially in a time of turmoil and uncertainty? \nThe Eightfold Path—central to the Buddha’s teachings—offers a structured yet flexible guide for cultivating wisdom\, ethical living\, and meditative awareness in a way that is both practical and transformative. \nIn this four-week course\, teacher Dave Smith will lead live sessions exploring how the Eightfold Path can provide clarity and direction in our practice today. To enrich our inquiry\, each week will also include exclusive pre-recorded video reflections by renowned teacher and author Stephen Batchelor\, created specifically for this program. \nDrawing from early Buddhist texts and contemporary interpretations\, we’ll examine how these teachings can be reimagined for a secular age and made relevant to our everyday experience. Through study\, discussion\, and guided reflection\, we will consider what it means to engage with the Dharma in a way that is both deeply personal and connected to the world around us. \nWhat does a secular Eightfold Path look like in practice? How can it offer insight and support in our daily lives? Together\, we’ll honor these ancient teachings while exploring a path that feels authentic and accessible. \nThis program is open to all—no prior study or experience required. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Rediscovering Your Super Powers - Cultivating the 5 Spiritual Faculties
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Rediscovering Your Super Powers – Cultivating the 5 Spiritual Faculties \n \nwith Leslie Booker and David Grogan\n \nThursdays\, April 10th – May 15th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nAs a global community we face tumultuous political and cultural changes that can trigger a range of mixed emotions. You might feel overwhelmed\, stuck\, angry\, or fearful\, as well as a sense of urgency to move into action. \nThe good news is that you already have within you the capacity to empower your practice. The Buddha identified five innate human faculties that can be developed and strengthened into transformative powers for personal and collective liberation from suffering; faith\, energy\, mindfulness\, concentration and wisdom. \nBalancing the powers to ensure they work as a cohesive system is essential and involves an ongoing process of adjusting and readjusting\, much like fine-tuning an instrument. \nFaith gives us trust and confidence in the Dharma\, dispelling doubt—and inspires the energy needed to move forward. When energy has found its equilibrium\, then there is much more ease in the body. And from that ease\, there can be continuity of mindfulness\, and when there is steadiness of mind\, concentration grows. As concentration deepens\, in the stillness of an attentive mind\, wisdom emerges. It’s the wisdom of emptiness\, of letting go of all that is not true\, that brings about our liberation. \nThroughout the course\, we’ll explore each of these powers in practical\, grounded ways—through guided meditation\, relational practice\, and weekly reflection prompts that support integration both on and off the cushion. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. But this grasping–whether to a sense of self\, certainty\, or the way we think things should be—only intensifies our suffering. \nThe Buddha’s teachings on anatta (not-self)\, anicca (impermanence)\, and dukkha (suffering) offer a path to navigating this intensity with more clarity and resilience. \nIn this new in-person and online course\, meditation teacher Elaine Retholtz will lead an exploration of how these teachings apply to the challenges we face today. How can we engage with the world without becoming consumed by outrage or despair? How do we work for change without rigidly attaching to our views? How do we meet uncertainty without shutting down? \nThrough meditation\, reflection\, and discussion\, we’ll explore practical ways to loosen our grip on fixed identities\, stay present in difficult times\, and develop a deeper\, more sustainable way of responding to the world around us. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Online: What's Vedanā Got to Do With It?

The Buddha emphasized the importance of being mindful of vedanā\, as it is a key link in Dependent Arising and the generation of suffering or liberation. \nAnd yet\, as poet Tom Hennen wrote: “But usually [these moments] just pass\, mostly unnoticed\, unless they are wildly nice\, like autumn ones full of red maple trees and hazy sunlight\, or if they are grimly awful ones in a winter blizzard that kills the lost traveler and bunches of cattle.” \nIn this course we will investigate our personal experience of vedanā\, the role it plays in fueling craving and aversion\, and the deeply ethical implications it has for our views\, biases\, and motivations for harm. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Investigating the Three Characteristics of Existence
DESCRIPTION:Online: Investigating the Three Characteristics of Existence \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, October 16th – November 13th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \n\n  \nThe Buddha’s teaching of anatta (not self) is too often misunderstood. In exploring the characteristic of not self\, we begin by exploring our views of the self. The Buddha never said there is no self. However nothing we typically relate to as self (body\, thoughts\, memories\, views\, emotions\, relationships\, possessions\, etc.) can be relied upon to last and to continue to satisfy. We will investigate the various levels of selfing and its relationship to clinging. \nWe’ve all experienced impermanence (anicca) first hand in our lives\, and would not intellectually challenge that things change. However deeply practicing and investigating anicca has implications for how we choose to live our lives \nThe Buddha said “I teach one thing and one thing only\, Dukkha and the end of Dukkha.” Through laying the groundwork through investigation of Anatta and Anicca\, we are ready to explore the three kinds of Dukkha. SUMMARY:Online: The Seven Factors of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Seven Factors of Awakening\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \nMondays\, April 17th\, 24th\, May 1st\, May 15th\, 22nd\, June 5th\, 12th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \n\n \nJoin us for the next course in this online series exploring how to cultivate mindfulness through cultivating the Seven Factors of Awakening – these wholesome qualities that help us remember and connect to the simple joys of non-clinging. \n•This summer\, we will explore the practice of cultivating lovingkindness and the other “divine abodes” of compassion\, joy\, and equanimity.\n•In the fall\, we will look more closely at what the Buddha called the “Three Characteristics” of all experience – Dukkha (variously translated as unsatisfactoriness\, suffering\, or vulnerability)\, Impermanence\, and the not-self characteristic. \nHere is an opportunity to develop connections with other practitioners as we explore together in a non-conceptual way various aspects of practice on and off the cushion. Think of this as a learning laboratory\, and what we are “studying” is our own hearts\, minds\, and bodies. \nIn our culture\, there can be a tendency to dwell on the negative – what we need to get rid of. Our lives and meditation practice can become an endless to do list and self improvement project. \nHowever\, just as in gardening\, there is a balance between creating an inhospitable environment for weeds and encouraging the growth of flowers or vegetables\, in our meditation practice there is an integral relationship between letting go of unwholesome states of mind and cultivating the wholesome. We will explore how to cultivate mindfulness\, investigation\, energy\, joy\, tranquility\, concentration\, and equanimity. \nEach class will include practice\, instruction\, talks\, and group dialogue and inquiry. There will also be ongoing practice assignments each week. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma \nwith Jon Aaron \nThursdays\, October 13th – November 10th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\nLocation for In-Person: New York Zendo (Shobo-Ji) on 223 East 67th Street\, NYC \nThe teachings of the Dharma are teachings about life. When we truly take the Dharma in and take refuge in the Dharma our life changes—sometimes in obvious ways\, sometimes in ways we don’t even see. In formal practice\, we experience the dharma in one way\, but it is how we take it into our life—our work\, our relationships\, our illnesses etc—that is truly important. \nIf you are new to the Dharma this will be an ideal introduction\, and like any great teachings\, if you have been practicing for many years your relationship to the teachings will have changed as well. \nThis program will be Online or In-Person. \nFinding Freedom within the Changing Nature of Experience\nThursdays\, October 13th – November 10th\, 2022 from 10:00am – Noon ET (5 classes)\nThe Five Aggregates of Clinging will be the primary teaching explored in this part. This map of the self allows us to both understand and experience the quality of anatta – not-self- the key to freedom. \nFor these weeks we will be grounded in a book by Ben Connelly titled Inside Vasubandhu’s Yogacara. The Yogacara is a later teaching which straddles the early Buddhist teachings heading into the Mahayana traditions. \nA follow-up course: Embodying Love\nThursdays\, January 12th – February 9th\, 2023 from 10:00am – Noon ET (5 classes)\nAs our practice deepens\, and the boundary between self and other softens\, the unconditional nature of love arises. At the same time\, mindful cultivation through formal practice of the boundless qualities of lovingkindness\, compassion\, resonant joy and equanimity can open the lens of wisdom and break through the barriers which have accumulated over lifetimes. For many\, resentments are a common obstruction to opening the heart and the practice of forgiveness becomes an essential key to these abodes. \nA follow-up course: Finding Balance in All That We Do\nThursdays\, February 16th – March 16th\, 2023 from 10:00am – Noon ET (5 classes)\nThe last of the Seven Awakening Factors\, the last of the Paramis (Ten Perfections) and the Fourth of the Divine Abodes\, equanimity is a quality of freedom which leads to appropriate response. In the world we live in this is a quality of strength and balance imbued with Lovingkindness \nNYI’s Covid Protocol for In-Person Indoors Programs:\nAll participants must be fully vaccinated and have received a Booster shot – Proof of vaccination and booster is required.\nAll participants must register in advance before attending the program.\nAll participants must wear masks at all times.\nDisclaimer:\nProcedures adhere to current CDC\, NY State\, NYC\, and New York Zendo Shobo-Ji guidelines.\nChanges may be applied at any time\, based on these third-party guidelines. \nAll in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \nFor the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell. \nFinding Freedom within the Changing Nature of Experience\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, click HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nFollow-Up Course: Embodying Love\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, click HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nFollow-Up Course: Finding Balance in All That We Do\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, click HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Maranasati - The Profound Practice of Mindfulness of Mortality
DESCRIPTION:Online: Maranasati – The Profound Practice of Mindfulness of Mortality \nwith Nikki Mirghafori \nWednesdays\, May 4th – May 25th\, 2022 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET \nWe “know” our time on this earth is limited\, yet most of us make daily and long-term choices that only make sense in light of eternity. The way to live more aligned with our values is to bring the scarcity of our time to our awareness. How would our priorities shift if we truly embraced our impermanence\, instead of fearfully running away from it? Would we waste less time? Love more deeply? Let go with more ease? Forgive ourselves and others? Have more freedom? Is it possible to prepare for a peaceful final goodbye\, be it ours or our loved ones? The liberating practice of mindfulness of mortality bestows these gifts\, and more. \nJoin us for this four week dive into the teachings and practices of maranasati (marana=death\, sati=mindfulness) to help us live more fully and die fearlessly. This online course includes lectures\, guided meditations\, discussions\, Q/A periods\, and optional homework reflection assignments. Please be advised that small group exercises (through breakout rooms on Zoom) are an integral part of our exploration and learning process. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off. It is also invaluable for MBSR teachers who are unfamiliar with this teaching and text.” – Jon Kabat-Zinn\, September 2021 \nVedana\, the texture of moment to moment experience\, is woven into every moment of our lives and its place in a number of key Buddhist teachings points to its importance in finding freedom from Dukkha. It is the second foundation of mindfulness\, it is one of the five aggregates\, it is a key player in the chains of dependent origination. As we begin to understand Vedana through the development of mindfulness we begin to clearly see the cause of suffering. These four weeks will be dedicated to exploring all aspects of Vedana and as we come to know it clearly the path to freedom from Dukkha—stress and suffering—becomes clearer. \nThough this is Part 2 of the 20-week class on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness it can be attended as a stand-alone class. \nThe Four Establishments or Foundations of Mindfulness are the core of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and most other “mainstream” mindfulness programs. This 2600-year-old set of teachings offers an incredibly powerful path of practice as well as diverse ways of looking at\, and working with\, our lived experience\, on and off the cushion. There is far more to the Satipatthana Sutta that is apparent\, or even explicit\, in most secular mindfulness courses. This will be an opportunity to explore the teachings in the fuller context of the Buddha’s presentation\, unimpeded. \nThough all Four Satipatthanas overlap\, each section will dive into one while relating to the others. You may register for all 20 weeks\, or go section by section. \nEach 2-Hour class includes a periods of practice\, inquiry\, a Dharma talk and discussion. \nThis course will be appropriate for anyone who has completed an MBSR Class\, Insight 101 or other mindfulness meditation class as well as those who have advanced practices. If you have questions about whether this is the right course for you\, please write to me. \nSection One — Coming Back to the Body with love!\nSeptember 30th-November 4th\, 2021 – Six weeks\nExploring the key teachings in the First Establishment: Mindfulness of the Body. \nSection Two — The Tonality of Experience\nNovember 11th-December 9th\, 2021 – Four Weeks\nWorking through the Second Establishment of Mindfulness: Vedana or how the mind receives experience. \nSection Three — The Wild and Crazy Mind\nJanuary 13th-February 3rd\, 2022 – Four Weeks\nContemplating the Third Establishment of Mindfulness: Mindfulness of Mind\, or how experience is influenced by the habitual responses and how mindful awareness creates the capacity to see beyond this. \nSection Four — Mapping Experience\nFebruary 10th-March 17th\, 2022 – Six Weeks\nMindfulness of Mind Objects (Dharmas): The Fourth and last of the Satipatthana teachings incorporates many other teachings which are primarily different ways of looking at our moment to moment experience including the obstacles and signs of progress toward one’s awakening and a deeper understanding of Dukkha and the end of Dukkha. \nThis course will use many resources in its exploration including the writings of Bhikkhu Analayo\, Bhante Gunaratana and Bhante Sujato and of course the various translations of the sutta. \nThis class will be online only \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off. This course will offer empowering instructions enabling us to know the immediate truth of our experience which is so worthy of our application. \nBeginners and experienced practitioners are welcome. \nRegistration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.
