SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \n\nCourse: Wednesdays\, February 1st – March 22nd\, 2023 | 9:30am – 12:00pm ET\nDaylong: Saturday\, March 4th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET\n \nRegistration ends on January 30\, 2023 | 3:30pm ET\n \nLocation: Still Mind Zendo\n37 W 17th St #6W\nNew York\, NY \n \n\n  \nCourse Description:\nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25 – 30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450\nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \nThursdays\, February 16th – March 16th\, 2023\nLocation for In-Person: New York Zendo (Shobo-Ji) on 223 East 67th Street\, NYC\n \n\n \nThe teachings of the Dharma are teachings about life. When we truly take the Dharma in and take refuge in the Dharma\, our life changes—sometimes in obvious ways\, sometimes in ways we don’t even see. In formal practice\, we experience the dharma in one way\, but it is how we take it into our life—our work\, our relationships\, our illnesses etc—that is truly important. \nIf you are new to the Dharma\, this will be an ideal introduction\, and like any great teachings\, if you have been practicing for many years\, your relationship to the teachings will have changed as well. \nThis course will be In-Person and Online. \nEmbodying Love\n \nThursdays\, February 16th – Match 16th\, 2023 from 10:00am – 12:00pm ET(5 classes)\n \nThe first session will be held only online.\n \nAs our practice deepens\, and the boundary between self and other softens\, the unconditional nature of love arises. At the same time\, mindful cultivation through formal practice of the boundless qualities of lovingkindness\, compassion\, resonant joy and equanimity can open the lens of wisdom and break through the barriers which have accumulated over lifetimes. For many\, resentments are a common obstruction to opening the heart and the practice of forgiveness becomes an essential key to these abodes. We will take a dive into the traditional Karaniya Metta Sutta and the other original teachings on Metta. We will also study some of the Kuan Yin Dharmas and teachings from the Yogacara tradition. \nEach class will include some chanting\, meditation\, dharma talk and discussion. There will be weekly readings and practices. \nA follow-up course: Finding Balance in the Midst of it All\nThursdays\, March 23-April 20\, 2023\, from 10:00am – 12:00pm ET (5 classes)\nIn the book “In the Lap of the Buddha” Gavin Harrison wrote\, “In spiritual freedom\, we do not become free from events\, but we become free within events. Circumstances lose their power to lacerate our minds”. In these five weeks\, we will look closely at how the Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path and other teachings from both the early and later teachings can bring us to a place of ease\, balance and equanimity. \nClasses will include some chanting\, meditation\, dharma talk and discussion. There will be weekly readings and practices. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nRegister for both 5-week courses\, Embodying Love and Finding Balance in All That We Do\, at a discount:\nIf you are having trouble registering below\, CLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nEmbodying Love\nIf you are having trouble registering below\, CLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nFollow-Up Course: Finding Balance in All That We Do\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, CLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nNYI’s Covid Protocol for In-Person Indoors Programs:\nAll participants must be fully vaccinated and have received a Booster shot – Proof of vaccination and booster is required.\nAll participants must register in advance before attending the program.\nAll participants are strongly encouraged to wear masks during these classes.\nDisclaimer:\nProcedures adhere to current CDC\, NY State\, NYC\, and New York Zendo Shobo-Ji guidelines.\nChanges may be applied at any time\, based on these third-party guidelines. \nAll in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \nFor the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell. \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Postponed: Back to Basics to Strengthen Your Practice
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: Back to Basics to Strengthen Your Practice \nwith Bart van Melik \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, Friday\, February 24 session is postponed\n \n\n  \nThe Buddha taught us to live in harmony with the way things are and to awaken to the truth of suffering and how to end it. This might sound like a lofty goal – especially if we attempt to walk this path alone. \nIt can be very supportive to practice\, in community\, the most basic instructions the Buddha gave: to fully know what it’s like to be human in every moment. \nDuring this online course\, we’ll explore the Buddha’s teachings on welcoming ALL of our experiences in the embrace of a supportive\, loving community. This course will offer empowering instructions and insightful collective reflection that brings us closer to the truth of our experience and each other. \nParticipants are welcome to drop in for a single session or join the full course\, as each session is based on timely subjects and the current needs of participants. \nBeginners and experienced practitioners are welcome. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new window for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:In-Person: Soulcentric Mid-Life - A Five Month Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Soulcentric Mid-Life – A Five-Month Course \n \nwith Lin Wang Gordon\n \nFive Saturdays: February 25th\, March 11th\, April 8th\, May 20th\, & June 3rd\, 2023 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET\n \nLocation: Still Mind Zendo\, 37 W 17th St\, #6W\nNew York\, NY\n \n\n \nAre you in your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? \nEvery life stage brings its own gifts. Each life stage has its own purpose in our development as a whole being. \nIf our life were the four seasons\, the 40s/50s could be the early fall. In every season of life\, there are changes and growth. \nMidlife could bring us menopause\, greying hair\, childcare\, eldercare\, an empty nest\, loss of loved ones\, or a second career\, but we also have more life experiences than we had in our young adult years. While our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and crisis\, it could also be a great time for inner growth\, clarity\, and purpose. \nDuring this 5-month in-person course\, we will explore many areas of our lives – health\, career\, money\, family\, relationship\, kids/no kids – what are the gifts of this life stage? \nHow do we feel about each of these areas in our life at this point? How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we live a fulfilling life with the time we have left? As we have learned from our life experiences so far\, have we started to live according to our inner values and deepest desires? What rituals may you start on your own? This class is for exploring questions rather than having answers. It is loosely influenced by Bill Plotkin’s book\, “Nature and the Human Soul” and other sources. \nThis course will meet once Saturday a month for five months. We will meditate\, journal\, form buddy groups\, and build community through sharing and dialogue. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels.
