SUMMARY:Sold Out: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:Sold Out: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \n\nIn-Person Course: Wednesdays\, October 16th – December 11th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Sunday\, November 17th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm\n \nPlease Note: No class on November 27th due to the Thanksgiving holiday\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor\n \nIf you attended the October 9th MBSR orientation and would like to register for the full MBSR course\, please contact registration@nyimc.org directly. \nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates \nIf you attended the October 9th MBSR orientation and would like to register for the full MBSR course\, please contact registration@nyimc.org directly. \nIn-Person Course Wednesdays\, October 16th – December 11th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong Sunday\, November 17th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $625 – Base $350 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:Online: The Blessings and Burdens of Aging - A Three-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Blessings and Burdens of Aging – A Three-Week Course\n \nwith Amy Selzer & Nancy Glimm\n \nSundays\, October 20th\, 27th & November 3rd\, 2024 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nIn this three-part series\, teachers Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm offer a community where you can feel safe to speak from your heart about aging\, your fears\, and what it means to age. \nSince we are all aging\, this class is open to everyone. \nSometimes as we age\, there can be a sense of growing contentment. Unexpected opportunities to become more ourselves might even arise. Yet the other side of growing older—the changes in our body\, our intellect\, our looks\, energy\, and vitality—can be difficult to embrace with an open heart. \nThis course is a space to share the things that are coming up for us—both what we appreciate and what we don’t—and cultivate the inner resources that can help with dealing with the challenges of confronting our impermanence. \nWe will look at our relationship to change and how change can include the cultivation of the heart and mind. Change is challenging for all of us. Often the aging population feels invisible. We will use these ideas as lessons in humility by putting our attention on being with things as they are. We will illuminate the wisdom that was not available to us when we were younger. The Buddhist teachings on the Brahma Viharas\, the heart qualities\, will support our inquiry into the challenges we face as we age. \nWe are creating a sangha of support\, safety\, and openness\, where we can all open to the “blessings and burdens” that aging brings. \nThe intention for this class is to offer participants ways to feel empowered in facing the difficulties that aging brings\, and to question some of the negative narratives we may be holding onto. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Online: Getting Well in an Unwell World - Walking the Buddha’s Path of Meditation and Relationality
DESCRIPTION:Online: Getting Well in an Unwell World – Walking the Buddha’s Path of Meditation and Relationality\n \nwith Sean Oakes\, PhD\n \nWednesdays\, October 23rd – November 20th\, 2024 | 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET\n \nPlease Note: Live sessions will take place from 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET. However\, if you are unable to attend live\, recordings of the sessions will be made available and sent out to all registrants the following morning\, allowing you to join the course on your own schedule.\n \n\n \nIn this 5-week course designed for those looking to deepen their practice — the first in a series of deepening practice and study courses—we will build the foundations of a sustainable and dynamic Theravāda Buddhist training. \nSomething needs to change. We find ourselves moving through a world shaped by the projects and struggles of our ancestors\, reckoning with the inheritance they left us\, part beautiful\, part terrible. We live in a place and time where every generation’s vision of how to live well is already obsolete by the time their children take the wheel. Each of us is one of those children\, and for many of us our way has been marked by poor guidance\, distorted histories\, and the erosion of grounded\, healthy culture. \nThe ancient South Asian teacher we call the Buddha established a path of community-based training in response to social upheaval and the need he saw for a new spirituality of heart\, inner clarity\, and accountability to the web of life. His principles\, which have always moved against the stream of the prevailing culture\, offer those who take them up a tested path to well-being and a vision for human flourishing. These teachings are laid out in a stunning body of oral literature called the Pāli Canon\, preserved by the Buddhist community known as the Theravāda\, or the “Elder Way.” \nWe’ll learn the basic skills of relationship and community-tending\, establish a solid meditation practice\, and engage with the Pāli Canon as both a teaching source and a literature of extraordinary beauty and depth. \nEach week we will meditate together\, read passages from the discourses\, and discuss the implications of the teachings for our lives here and now. You will come away with an approach to Buddhist practice that is flexible\, curious\, and joyful\, an earthy spirituality that honors the wise and well ancestors and the possibility of real awakening in our time.
