SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, January 7th\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from January 7th through January 28th. Looking for more tai chi? Another series will run from February 4th through February 25th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Soul-Centric Mid-Life - A Five-Month Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Soul-Centric Mid-Life – A Five-Month Course \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nFive Saturdays: January 10th\, February 7th\, March 7th\, April 4th\, and May 2nd\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n*Note: The first session of this class will take place at Balance Arts Center\, 151 W. 30th St\, 3rd Floor. \n \nAre you in your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? \nEvery life stage brings its own gifts. Each life stage has its own purpose in our development as a whole being. In every season of our life\, there are changes and growth\, letting go and rebirth. Midlife could bring us menopause\, greying hair\, childcare\, eldercare\, an empty nest\, loss of loved ones\, second careers\, and relationship changes..but we also have more life experiences and skills than we had in our younger years. Perhaps we also have more time and resources to find joy and explore our passions. While our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and crisis\, it could also be a great time for inner growth\, clarity\, and purpose. \nIn this 5-month course\, we will use inquiries\, experiential exercises\, and meditation practice to explore our underlying emotions around midlife issues. What are our fears\, doubts\, agitation\, hopes\, and dreams? How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we live a fulfilling life with the time we have left? As we have learned from our life experiences so far\, have we started to live in accordance with our inner values and deepest desires? How do we let go of our former selves and keep evolving? This class is for exploring questions rather than having answers. It is based on Buddhist philosophy to help us transform our mind in approaching these inquiries. It is highly interactive and experiential in nature – we will spend much time in group work and less time in formal sitting practice. Central to this course is building a community among people in the midlife stage. \nThis is an in-person course and will meet monthly on a Saturday for half a day. We will meditate\, journal\, form buddy groups\, and build community through sharing\, dialogues\, and group work. \nThe class creates a sacred and supportive container to connect with others at the same life stage. Lin is a gifted teacher and guided us through a journey of facing mid-life with gratitude\, honesty\, and introspection. I came out of the class with a more expansive and empowered perspective on this unique stage of life. \n– A participant from Soul-Centric Mid-Life\, 2023 \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: What Is Freedom? Rest\, Wise Effort\, and Nourishing What We Want to Grow
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: What Is Freedom? Rest\, Wise Effort\, and Nourishing What We Want to Grow \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts\n \nThursday\, January 15th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAt the start of a new year\, many of us feel compelled toward striving and self-improvement. That same pressure often follows us into our spiritual practice\, layered on top of long-standing habits of pushing ourselves and harsh self-judgment. \nThis evening workshop with teachers Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts draws on the Buddha’s teachings on the Four Right Efforts\, exploring how freedom develops through learning when to apply effort\, when to rest\, and how to listen to the body’s intelligence. Rather than tightening the strings of the lute or letting them go slack\, we practice tuning them so clarity and ease can emerge naturally. \nThrough meditation\, gentle movement and play\, shared inquiry\, poetry\, and moments of quiet\, we explore how to nourish what supports clarity\, joy\, and steadiness\, without forcing change or improvement. This work invites a direct\, embodied sense of how freedom is cultivated through wise effort rather than pressure or self-correction. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. You are welcome exactly as you are\, with curiosity and a willingness to be present. \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is offered monthly on the first or second Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET and is offered in a hybrid format. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, Linds Roberts guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. You are welcome to register for a single session\, select multiple dates\, or join the full series at a discounted rate. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nRegister for one session or the full series (at a discount!) below.\n2026: January 15 | February 12 | March 12 | April 9 | May 7 | June 18 | July 9 | August 6 \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\nIn-Person Full Series\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\nOnline Full Series\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:Online: Understanding Anger - A Trauma-Informed Approach (Two-Part Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Online: Understanding Anger – A Trauma-Informed Approach (Two-Part Workshop) \nwith Amma Thanasanti \nSaturdays\, January 17th and 24th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 12:30pm ET \n \nNot all anger is the same. \nAnger is often treated as a single emotion to be suppressed\, managed\, or released. In our life and practice\, it arises in distinct ways\, each with its own causes\, functions\, and implications. \nThis two-part online series explores anger through a more nuanced lens\, helping participants discern which expressions of anger can be worked with skillfully in meditation and which signal the need for additional forms of support. \nWorking with Different Forms of Anger \nIn this workshop\, we will explore situational irritation\, boundary-protecting anger\, righteous anger\, and trauma-based rage\, examining what each is communicating and why different approaches are required. Participants will explore the protective and informative nature of anger and learn how to listen to it without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down. \nWhen Meditation Is—and Isn’t—Enough \nThe program also addresses why standard meditation instructions sometimes fall short when working with anger\, and how to recognize when meditation practice is helpful—and when additional therapeutic or trauma-informed support is needed. \nParticipants will be introduced to practical frameworks for working with everyday\, low-risk anger; guidance for assessing personal patterns; and pathways for ongoing support\, including trauma-informed therapy\, Integrated Meditation Program (IMP)\, trauma-informed mindfulness approaches\, and SHINE-based frameworks. \nFormat and Approach \nThis is an educational and lightly experiential workshop grounded in trauma-informed principles. Experiential exercises will work only with mild\, present-moment irritation and are always optional. This is not a space for trauma processing or deep emotional work. \nSessions include teaching\, guided mindfulness practices with clear boundaries\, individual reflection\, optional small-group pattern recognition (not processing)\, and time for questions and resource guidance. \nWho This Program Is For \nThis workshop is well suited for meditation practitioners who want to work more skillfully with anger\, who sense that their current practice has not fully addressed their anger patterns\, or who are curious about trauma-informed approaches to difficult emotions. \nParticipants will leave with a clearer understanding of different types of anger\, tools for working with everyday irritation and frustration\, greater confidence in discerning what kind of support their anger patterns call for\, and concrete next steps for ongoing practice or care. \nSchedule \nFour 90-minute sessions: \nSession 1: The landscape of anger\nSession 2: Working with low-risk anger\nSession 3: When meditation isn’t enough\nSession 4: Resources and pathways forward \nDates: January 17 and January 24\, 2026\nTime: 9:30 am–12:30 pm Eastern Time \nFrequently Asked Questions \nQ: Is this appropriate for beginners? \nA: This workshop is designed for anyone with some meditation experience who wants to understand anger more deeply. No advanced practice required. \nQ: What if I get activated during the workshop? \nA: We use trauma-informed approaches with clear boundaries. You control your engagement level\, can step away anytime\, and the facilitator is available for support. Activation is treated as useful information about what you need\, not a problem. \nQ: Will I process my trauma? \nA: No. This workshop helps you understand your anger patterns and find appropriate resources for deeper work. We work only with mild\, present-moment experiences. \nQ: Is the small group sharing required? \nA: No. All experiential components are optional. You can work individually throughout if you prefer. \nQ: What’s the difference between this and therapy? \nA: This is education and awareness-building\, not therapy. It will help you recognize what kind of support you need and where to find it. \nQ: Will recordings be available? \nA: Yes\, recordings will be sent to all registrants within a few days of each session. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. This registration will grant attendance for you and your buddy.

SUMMARY:Online: Mindful Ikebana - The Contemplative Art of Flower Arranging
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindful Ikebana – The Contemplative Art of Flower Arranging\n \nwith Anjie Cho\n \nSundays\, January 18th – February 1st\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n  \nJoin us for a special three-week online course exploring ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arrangement\, as a contemplative practice that works directly with attention\, form\, and the natural beauty of flowers. \nWorking with living materials offers a direct way of engaging impermanence\, balance\, and form—qualities that also sit at the heart of meditation practice. \nIn this three-week online course\, Anjie Cho introduces ikebana as a contemplative art that unfolds through sustained\, hands-on practice. Offered in this extended\, multi-week format for the first time\, the course allows participants to work slowly and deliberately\, returning to core principles with increasing clarity and care. \nRather than a single-session workshop\, this structure creates more time and space to practice at home\, observe what emerges\, and deepen understanding through feedback from the teacher and group. Each week builds on the last through repetition\, reflection\, and guided inquiry. \nParticipants are introduced to foundational ikebana forms\, beginning with a freestyle Moribana arrangement\, moving into the structural principles of Heaven\, Earth\, and Human\, and concluding with Nageire\, an upright and expressive style. Between sessions\, participants create arrangements in their own space and share them with the class for viewing and optional feedback. \nA central focus of the course is learning how to work with what is available. Participants source flowers and natural materials locally\, developing an intuitive understanding of how palettes come together through relationship\, contrast\, and restraint—addressing one of the most common questions in ikebana practice. \nThis workshop has long filled quickly when offered in person. The online format makes it possible to welcome a wider group of participants while also offering a deeper learning experience over time. \nThis program is open to all levels. No prior experience with ikebana or visual art is required. All sessions will be recorded and shared with registrants. \nMaterials\nFlower and equipment are NOT provided. Basic equipment will support your at-home practice after the first class. Many participants will already have suitable containers and scissors\, though a kenzan may need to be purchased. Materials can be ordered directly from Anjie’s website or through her Amazon store. All equipment will be discussed in more detail during the first session. \nNote: This program will be recorded. Recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session\, so you are welcome to register even if you cannot attend one or more sessions live. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, January 21st\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Five Spiritual Powers
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Five Spiritual Powers \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, January 26th – March 2nd (skips President’s Day\, February 16th)\, 2026 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n\nNote: due to the severe winter weather forecast\, the first session of this course (January 26th) will take place online only. \nIn a time of what seems like constant stress and confusion\, many of us feel vastly under-resourced—like we might not have what it takes to face each day. But each of us have within us the capacity to develop lasting resources that we can call on in challenging times. These resources are known as the Five Spiritual Powers\, sometimes called the Five Spiritual Faculties\, and consist of Faith (Confidence)\, Energy (Courage)\, Mindfulness\, Collectedness (Concentration)\, and Wisdom. All of us\, no matter our background or experiences\, possess the seeds of what is needed to nurture these qualities within ourselves. \nOver the course of this five week course\, we’ll investigate all five of the spiritual powers\, first learning how to notice where and when they are present and not present. \nWith the help of teacher Elaine Retholtz\, you’ll work on cultivating these skillful qualities of mind and uprooting the tendencies that cloud the mind and heart. \nTogether we’ll discover how to incorporate awareness of the five spiritual powers into our meditation practice and our daily lives. These special qualities of mind lead us to greater degrees of freedom from our habitual habits and reactivity. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost.
