Through gentle InterPlay and meditation practices\, we let the body rest from effort and rediscover trust\, spontaneity\, and ease. When nothing is required of us\, creativity naturally emerges\, not as something we produce\, but as something we allow. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. The Buddha\, who also lived during an era of alarming social discord\, called the volatile forces that unsettle hearts and minds the Eight Worldly Winds: gain and loss\, praise and blame\, status and shame\, pleasure and pain. Join our four-week course and cultivate a greater capacity to weather the blustery stresses of modern life\, as well as find stability and clarity in the eye of a superstorm. \nEach week\, through foundational meditation practices\, explore how to anchor your attention and face difficult emotions without being consumed by them. Yet for queer people in 21st century America\, they can also be a little…. fraught. What counts as “sexual misconduct” (if that’s even the right term to use)? Do all drugs “lead to confusion”? What counts as “harsh language” in a culture that is often serving tea? \nIn this 5 month series\, we’re going to take an honest\, deep\, and participatory dive into the precepts. We’ll explore where they serve us\, and where they may not. We’ll work with the complexities that come with any 2500-year-old tradition\, particularly one which often promotes monasticism as an ideal. \nThere will be a ½ day retreat mid way through the course\, and we’ll also have the opportunity to meet in small groups and with a teacher in between the monthly sessions for support to deepen our personal understanding and to cultivate spiritual friendships. \nUltimately\, we hope to arrive at multiple ways of navigating ethics and community together. What forms of substance use block the heart from belonging to one other\, and what might empower it? And just as in cultivating a garden\, we must learn to distinguish the weeds from the flowers (or vegetables!)\, in our formal and life practices our task is to discern what mind states are harmful and what states support a life of contentment and freedom. \nOftentimes\, practitioners focus only on getting rid of the weeds and neglect actually learning how to cultivate the beautiful\, thus missing out on learning that cultivating the beautiful discourages the growth of the weeds. There is no need to get rid of all of the weeds before cultivating the crops. (Think of companion planting\, for those of you who garden!) \nIn this\, the first part of this series\, we will learn to identify the “weeds” — known as the Five Hindrances. These are: craving\, aversion\, restlessness and worry\, sleepiness and dullness\, and doubt. \nIn the second part of the series\, we will learn how to cultivate more wholesome qualities – the flowers and vegetables that nourish the heart and mind. DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, March 25th\, 2026 | 5:30pm – 6:30pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between.
