SUMMARY:Online: When Sh*t Hits the Fan - Broken Heart Dharma
DESCRIPTION:Online: When Sh*t Hits the Fan – Broken Heart Dharma \n\nPart 2: Picking Up The Pieces \nwith Jon Aaron \nThursdays\, April 9th to May 14th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET \n \nThe Buddha’s First Noble Truth clearly states: there is dukkha. This has been translated as un-satisfactoriness\, suffering\, dis-ease\, being out of whack—take your pick! We all know it when we are in it. In other words\, shit happens. In fact\, shit is always happening. We all see it all around us\, and we experience it in many ways. Every now and then\, in addition to moving through a world so prone to breaking our hearts\, our own more personal world might get turned upside down. You lose a loved one\, a job\, a home\, or your body as you once knew it. You take a devastating financial hit. You’re injured in such a way that your life is permanently changed. A relationship ends. Something or someone you’ve counted on your whole life is suddenly gone. Sometimes\, several losses or injuries hit at once or in close succession: when it rains\, it pours! It can feel like the world is falling apart. And in many ways\, it is. In those moments dukkha is not just a concept; we feel it in our bones\, we call out into the night. \nMost of us\, understandably\, are conditioned to push away suffering. To leap into making it better\, or simply not feeling it. To deny it\, to fix it\, to rage at it. I get it. I have those reflexes in me. Our culture can also exacerbate such aversion\, and sell us all kinds of things and services in these moments of desperation. Indeed\, the overwhelming sadness or discombobulation can be paralyzing. \nCompartmentalization\, to some degree\, can be a good survival tactic. To help us still get out of bed\, brush our teeth\, make a meal. And yet\, there is also a path to freedom that awaits in feeling into the dukkha fully and fearlessly. This is not about a dull acceptance\, or the indulgence of self-pity. It’s about the courage to face reality\, to acknowledge our humanity\, and to build from there\, with less delusions\, less attachments to false refuges\, less illusions of safety that lead us astray. \nThose familiar with the Buddhist tradition will have likely come across the teaching of the 12 links\, or nidanas\, which keep us going around and around in cycles of suffering. But in the early Buddhist texts\, there is another set of links\, the positive nidanas\, that set us on to what some have called the Spiral Path to liberation. The first of those links is\, unsurprisingly\, dukkha. Immediately after comes sraddha (faith on that which is reliable\, or confidence). Sraddha is crucial for the awakening process\, yet it depends on suffering in order to arise. How does that work? What does it mean for those of us who may be in the thick of a broken heart? Of life plans suddenly imploding? Of devastating losses? \nDrawing on Pema Chödrön’s cherished book and other resources\, I invite you to join me in a series of three classes to explore these themes. Let’s sit together in the rubble of our lives and see what happens when we don’t turn away. \nWhat the course includes: \n\na period of guided meditation specific to the course theme\na dharma talk\nQ&A and discussion\nsomatic exercises and occasional chanting/mantra practice\nRecording of the talk portion and any readings will be sent to registered participants\n\nOptional Mentoring: \nEvery registrant will also have the option to join the course with an individual mentoring session in each of the sections. \nOptional Retreats: \nAn online Retreat Day will be scheduled after Part 1 (optional)\, and a short retreat after Part 2. \nSliding Scale \nNYI is committed to making these courses easily available\, so we use a sliding scale. Each of the three sections is offered at a sliding scale as follows. \n\nBenefactor $420\nStandard $300\nSupported $180 (please email registration@nyimc.org about payment plan options or scholarships if this is still out of reach).\n\nPlease choose the level of contribution that is most suitable to your situation. \nEveryone who is registered will receive recordings of the talks and all materials\, even if they miss a session. \nPart 1: When Things Fall Apart (Feb 5 to Mar 12)\nPart 2: Picking Up The Pieces (Apr 9 to May 14)\nPart 3: Shattered And Whole (May 21 to Jun 25) \nSix Thursdays (online) in each series\n10:00 AM–12:00 PM EST / 9:00 AM–11:00 AM CST / 7:00 AM–9:00 AM PST / 3:00 PM–5:00 PM GMT \nRegistration – Part 2\nUse this form if you wish to register for Part 2: Picking Up the Pieces (Apr 9 to May 14; 6 sessions). You are welcome to join even if you have not taken Part 1. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: From Rupture to Repair - The Inner Work of Healing in Relationships
DESCRIPTION:Online: From Rupture to Repair – The Inner Work of Healing in Relationships \nwith Dalya Tamir \nThursdays\, April 9 – 30\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \n \n“My daughter won’t speak to me\, she hides in her room and acts like a stranger.” \n“My husband and I fight all the time\, over nonsense. Then we make up\, and before we know it we fight again. I forgot what it feels like to enjoy each other.” \nRuptures in relationships are some of the most painful experiences in our lives. Tension\, disagreements\, misunderstandings\, or arguments may leave us feeling confused\, hurt\, angry\, disheartened\, and often afraid of what will come next. When old or current hurts in relationships are not attended to\, the distance between individuals or groups of people may grow wider and the possibility of bridging that gap can seem impossible. \nOver the course of this four-week course\, we will deepen our capacity to be present in challenging relationships. We will begin the journey of repair by turning toward our inner landscape\, meeting our raw experience with mindfulness\, and holding ourselves in loving awareness. With the help of teacher Dalya Tamir\, we’ll explore our willingness to engage in the process of repair and set an intention to do so. Using an approach based on Non-Violent Communication\, we will learn how to identify our unmet needs and learn how to communicate them in a way that can be heard. \nThis course will provide you with tools to create healthy boundaries\, rebuild trust with yourself and others\, hold yourself with compassion\, and will offer new ways to rekindle connection\, understanding\, and even warmth in a relationship that has been challenging for you. \nJoin us for an interactive and rich exploration of repair in relationships that will call forth your innate wisdom and compassion and will enhance harmony\, peace\, and wellbeing in our world. \nNote: This program will be recorded. Recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session\, so you are welcome to register even if you cannot attend one or more sessions live. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Imprints & Triggers - How Karma Works
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Imprints & Triggers – How Karma Works \nwith David Nichtern \nTuesdays\, April 14th and 21st\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nHave you ever noticed how\, in the moment\, somebody can say or do something that seems to dramatically shift your state of mind\, causing you to experience a sudden surge in irritation\, grasping or zoning out? \nThese workshops trace karma as the subtle residue of thoughts\, words\, and actions: imprints that settle in the mind\, and the triggers that awaken them\, pulling us into automatic responses without our conscious awareness. \nBased on the highly nuanced Buddhist teachings of Abhidharma\, through mindfulness and awareness techniques\, we will track this process – developing the capacity to see\, in real time\, how karmic patterns are created\, and how they pull us into unnecessary suffering within our own mind and in relation to our interactions with others. \nJoin teacher David Nichtern for this special two-part series! Workshops will include meditation instruction and practice\, lectures\, discussion and breakout groups. All levels welcome. \nNote: This program will be recorded\, and the recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Queer Eye(s) on the Precepts
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Queer Eye(s) on the Precepts \nwith Leslie Booker\, Jay Michaelson\, and Jacoby Ballard\, assisted by Steph McIsaac \nFour Tuesday evening classes plus a Saturday half-day retreat\nEvening Classes: Tuesdays\, February 17th\, March 17th\, May 12th\, and June 16th 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\nHalf-Day Retreat: Saturday\, April 18th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\nSign up for the full course\, a single session\, or anything in-between! \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nThe Five Precepts form the foundation of Buddhist ethics in the insight tradition. Yet for queer people in 21st century America\, they can also be a little…. fraught. What counts as “sexual misconduct” (if that’s even the right term to use)? Do all drugs “lead to confusion”? What counts as “harsh language” in a culture that is often serving tea? \nIn this 5 month series\, we’re going to take an honest\, deep\, and participatory dive into the precepts. We’ll explore where they serve us\, and where they may not. We’ll work with the complexities that come with any 2500-year-old tradition\, particularly one which often promotes monasticism as an ideal. \nThere will be a ½ day retreat mid way through the course\, and we’ll also have the opportunity to meet in small groups and with a teacher in between the monthly sessions for support to deepen our personal understanding and to cultivate spiritual friendships. \nUltimately\, we hope to arrive at multiple ways of navigating ethics and community together. (And since we take an expansive definition of queerness\, you’re welcome to join if that word speaks to your experience.) \nDescriptions for each class session appear below. You are welcome to sign up for the full course\, or for individual sessions. \nClass 1 – Protecting Life (Tuesday\, Feb. 17\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nBeyond “not killing”\, what might it look like to protect life and cultivate non-harming (including non-self-harm) in our violent\, oppressive and extractive society? \nClass 2 – Cultivating Generosity (Tuesday\, March 17\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nHow can queer communities cultivate generosity\, mutual aid\, and collective care in a society built on commerce (and theft)? How might this be expressed in creating cultures of belonging? \nClass 3/Half-Day Retreat – The One about Sex (Saturday\, April. 18\, 10:00am – 1:00pm ET)\nWhat does it mean to engage in sexual relationships ethically? How do queer relationship structures and practices – including polyamory\, kink\, open relationships\, asexuality\, and periods of celibacy – fit within the precepts? How do we lovingly navigate relationships with exes and former lovers in often tightly-knit communities? \nClass 4 – Skillful Speech (Tuesday\, May 12\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nWhat does “right speech” look like in communities where accountability is important\, in which conflict is not abuse\, and yet where harm can still be done by harmful or hurtful speech\, by gossip\, or even by idle chatter? \nClass 5 – What is an intoxicant? (Tuesday\, June 16\, 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET)\nQueer people have a wide variety of relationships (often fraught) toward substances. What might healthy relationships to substances look like? What forms of substance use block the heart from belonging to one other\, and what might empower it? Other than substances\, what intoxicants might we encounter in our lives (e.g. dating apps\, social media)? \n \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for the full course or individual sessions. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and all additional contributions will go to the class’s teachers.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Margrit Pittman-Polletta \nIn-Person Orientation: Monday\, April 13th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Mondays\, April 20th – June 15th (skips June 1st)\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, May 16th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 45-60 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 46 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates: \nFree Orientation (required): Monday\, April 13th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nCourse: Mondays\, April 20 – June 15 (skips June 1)\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nDaylong: Saturday\, May 16\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $715 – Base $420 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. Email registration@nyimc.org for more info. \nParticipants may register after the orientation for this class takes place\, but must still view a recorded orientation\, complete the pre-class questionnaire and arrange a pre-class interview with the teacher. If would like to register for this course but are not able to make it to the orientation\, please email us at registration@nyimc.org so we can make the necessary arrangements with the teacher. \nSign up for the free orientation on April 13th here. \nRegister for the MBSR Course:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Tim Abshire \nWednesday\, April 22nd\, 2026 | 5:30pm – 6:30pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from April 1st through April 29th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series.
