SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Cultivating Joy in the Refuge of Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Cultivating Joy in the Refuge of Uncertainty\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \nThursdays\, September 21st – November 16th\, 2023 (skipping November 2nd) | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Zendo at 223 E 67th St in New York\, NY\n \n\n \nWe live in what can be described as a “poly-crisis” moment\, with multiple threats that all seem to be existential: climate change\, numerous wars\, failing democratic norms\, A.I. gone wild\, widening social inequities\, extreme polarization\, etc. \nMany of us feel this deeply\, physically\, and for some\, very materially as well. Sometimes this compounds the smaller-scale\, yet no less dramatic\, crises in our lives. The mind tumbles into catastrophizing and what some call “horrified anxiety” – a near enemy of karuna\, compassion.  \nIn fact\, every moment is uncertain. The Buddhist tradition tells us that everything arises from causes and conditions. Conditioned things are impermanent and lack any solid\, fixed nature\, which means that everything is always on shaky ground… and\, on the upside\, much is possible. We can experience that non-fixedness as dukkha (suffering)\, but that’s not the end of the story. Non-fixedness is also infinite potential\, possibility\, creativity. \n \nWhen we tap into that\, joy can become part of the experience of uncertainty by loosening our attachment to outcomes and to certainty itself. \nIn his lifetime\, the Buddha experienced tremendous losses\, genocide\, and the social transformation of the world he knew. It’s possible that all this turmoil contributed to his deep insight. His transformative teachings on emptiness\, karma\, and equanimity have much to offer to our moment.  \nJoin us for a new in-person and online eight-week course with New York Insight Teacher Jon Aaron exploring how we can live with uncertainty\, not from a place of fear but with buoyancy\, curiosity\, and ease. We’ll discover how the teachings provide practical ways of coping with these various threats and how we can cultivate joy in uncertainty instead of battling it in the doomed hope of clinging to certainties that ultimately will not last.\n \nEach class will include meditation practices\, dharma teachings\, and discussion. Some prior meditation experience is required\, as well as some understanding of basic Buddhist teachings. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. Members of our Circle of Friends are eligible to receive 20% off of the Sustaining Rate via a code provided in the email confirming membership\, which you can enter after clicking the Sustaining Level registration. \n*Benefactor Level: Supports NYI’s ability to offer the Subsidized Base. \n**Sustaining Level: This level reflects the actual costs to support this program. Circle of Friends members eligible for 20% discount with code. If your question is not addressed in the FAQs\, please email registration@nyimc.org. \nIf you are unable to pay the Subsidized Base Fee\, you can learn about volunteering to offer work exchange and letting us know how much you are able to pay for this program by emailing registration@nyimc.org. \nPlease note that New York Insight records online programs. The recorded content may be discoverable should a legal matter arise. \nBy registering\, I give New York Insight permission to use my text/video/audio for educational or other purposes for the duration of New York Insight activities going forward. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact registration@nyimc.org. \n

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur - A Day of Silence and Reflection
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur – A Day of Silence and Reflection\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz and Jon Aaron\n \nMonday\, September 25th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 7:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: Balance Arts Center at 151 W 30th St 3rd floor\, New York City\n \n\n \nYom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement\, a day when\, as a community\, Jews are asked to reflect on their actions of the past year and to ask for atonement for any actions that were unskillful. In support of this day\, for the past 19 years\, NYI has hosted a day of silence and reflection. \nTo join us online\, please use this Zoom link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83545751797?pwd=Ti9qM3FxZyszNjRoQkN3TzJTVjdCQT09\nMeeting ID: 835 4575 1797\nPasscode: 442272\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kd6aM8SGwh \nThis year New York Insight will continue the annual Yom Kippur tradition. As we begin to emerge into a different phase of the pandemic\, we are happy to offer a hybrid event. All are welcome to participate\, however\, there are only limited spaces for those who wish to participate in person\, so pre-registration is absolutely necessary. In addition\, while we acknowledge the culture of “shul hopping” – coming for a part of the day and moving on\, we ask that you register only for the part(s) of the day that you are committed to attend\, so that as many as possible can be accommodated. \nAs always\, there will be meditations focused on the idea of right action\, the difference between guilt and remorse\, the laws of karma\, forgiveness\, and lovingkindness. There will also be an opportunity for mindful discussion on the Buddhist perspective on atonement. This year\, especially\, in the context of moving out of isolation into an in person event\, we will be emphasizing the jewel of Sangha – community. \nAll are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast. \nThis daylong retreat is a dana (donation) based event\, with donations being divided between New York Insight and Buddhist Global Relief. Guided by Buddhist teachings\, Buddhist Global Relief strives to relieve chronic hunger and malnutrition worldwide. Thank you for your generosity! \nCLICK HERE to download the Outline of the Day\nCLICK HERE to download the Handout Booklet\nCLICK HERE to download the Chant sheet \nReserving Space for In-Person Participation\, Online\, and Donations:\nPlease donate as much as you are able and willing.\nWhatever you offer will be greatly appreciated. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nFor Online participation\, please scroll further down. \nIn-Person Participation:\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new window for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \n•For the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell.\n•All in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \nOnline Participation (via Zoom): \nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new window for an easier process. \n
