SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Classical Buddhist Practice - A Daylong Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Classical Buddhist Practice – A Daylong Retreat \nwith Andrew Olendzki \nSaturday\, April 12th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAs meditation has become more mainstream\, it has often been stripped of its Buddhist context to make it more widely accessible. While this shift has led to its widespread popularity\, it has also come at a cost—leaving behind essential aspects of the practice. \nIn this daylong program\, renowned Buddhist scholar and teacher Andrew Olendzki\, creator of the classical meditation app BuddhaWord\, explores the differences between traditional and contemporary approaches to meditation. Drawing from the Pali Canon\, he will illuminate key insights from the historical Buddha that can deepen and clarify our understanding of meditation today. \nThe workshop includes lectures\, discussions\, Q&A\, and guided and unguided meditation sessions. Open to both beginners and experienced practitioners. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Untangling Patterns of Reactivity – A Daylong Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Untangling Patterns of Reactivity – A Daylong Retreat \nwith nico hase \nSaturday\, April 19th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nEven if you consider yourself the kind of person who remains calm in the face of crisis\, sometimes things just get to us. If we’re not careful\, we might find ourselves growing tangled in negative thought patterns. Without a dose of healthy awareness\, a cycle of reactivity can deepen\, leaving us feeling disconnected from what we truly feel in every moment. \nThe Buddhist path offers us a way to untangle the tangles and step into freedom. In this daylong retreat\, visiting teacher nico hase will offer reflections and practices that help us understand where our reactivity comes from\, and how to gradually release ourselves from its grip. \nJoin us for a day of meditation and inquiry as we walk the path together to greater freedom\, connection\, and space. \nThe day will begin with an hour of conversation and an opening talk around the theme. We’ll then sit and walk for four hours in lightly guided practice\, before reconvening for a closing talk and further dialogue. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Moment by Moment - Taking Care in a Turbulent World
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Moment by Moment – Taking Care in a Turbulent World \nwith David Grogan \nSaturday\, April 26th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn these tumultuous times\, mindfulness is an essential tool for remaining calm and alert. In the quest to find a path forward\, however\, that’s not enough. What’s needed is for mindfulness to be infused with an ethical dimension—an attitude of care. That includes a recognition that all human actions\, large and small\, can have an impact. \nBefore he took his last breath\, the Buddha shared one key word as inspiration for his grieving disciples in their quest to find a path forward after his death. That word is appamada\, which in Pali means heedfulness or care. \nDuring this daylong retreat\, we’ll explore how this concept of care energizes meditation practice\, preventing it from becoming a static or habitual routine\, and transforms it into a tool for clarity and active engagement with the world—even in the face of seemingly insurmountable uncertainty and difficulty. \nTogether we’ll explore the multi-faceted aspects of mindfulness that appamada brings to life. Practices will include formal meditation and mindful movement\, as well as inter-relational practices and opportunities for self-reflection or journaling based on poetry prompts. Join us in sampling an approach to meditation and life that emphasizes the importance of seizing the moment and realizing the full potential of yourself and others. \nEveryone is welcome\, regardless of previous experience with meditation. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity!
