DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur – A Day of Silence and Reflection \nwith Elaine Retholtz and Jon Aaron \nThursday\, October 2nd\, 2025 | 10:00am – 7:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nFor over two decades New York Insight has been offering a day of reflection and practice on Yom Kippur. This year\, we ask: \nWhat is Yom Kippur to you? What brings you to this day? Is it simply a ritual? An instinct (like animals and birds and fish migrating home)? Is it the memories of past experiences at NYI’s Yom Kippur retreats? \nIs there a belief that by going through the rituals of the day that somehow we will be forgiven? \nOr is it something deeper? An invitation to a journey of deep transformation? Trusting that if we are willing to go deep\, to face our fears\, regrets\, our karma that something unknown will emerge? \nWhile we are aware of the culture of “shul hopping\,” we strongly encourage you to stay for the entire day to engage in this internal and communal process of purification. \nAll are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast. \nThis daylong retreat is a dana (donation) based event. Thank you for your generosity! \nCLICK HERE to download the Outline of the Day\nCLICK HERE to download the Handout Booklet\nCLICK HERE to download the Chant sheet \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below at the level of support you are able and willing to provide. Whatever you offer will be greatly appreciated. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Connecting with the Source of Self-Compassion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Connecting with the Source of Self-Compassion \nwith Caverly Morgan \nSunday\, October 5th\, 2025 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nConnect with your compassionate nature.\nMany of us struggle to offer ourselves compassion because we are identified with a limited\, separate sense of self. This smaller self often feels inadequate\, unworthy\, or lacking the resources and knowledge to truly care for itself. This is the self that suffers. \nOpening our hearts transforms our lives\, granting us greater peace and resilience in the face of emotional challenges. We become happier and more satisfied. But when we cling to the notion of a limited self that must control everything and perfect every practice\, we amplify our suffering. We may even criticize ourselves for not being self-compassionate enough\, creating a vicious cycle of judgment and inadequacy. \nHowever\, when we connect with the heart of who we truly are—which is inherently wise\, loving\, and not separate from the whole—compassion flows effortlessly. It’s from this deep wellspring within our true nature that we can genuinely open our hearts to ourselves and others. \nThis workshop invites you to explore these profound questions: Who is the self in self-compassion? What is the heart that opens to ourselves\, others\, and life itself? Is there an “I” doing anything at all\, or are we simply resting in our true nature? \nWhen we awaken to our true nature\, we don’t bypass the world. We awaken to love it more fully. And self-compassion is the first expression of that love\, starting with the self we thought we were. \nJoin us as we access and embody loving Awareness\, where natural wisdom and compassion reside. \nWhat You’ll Learn:\n\nHow to respond to feelings of failure or inadequacy with kindness and care.\nHow to relate to difficult emotions with greater ease.\nHow to take the effort out of self-compassion practice.\nHow to access your true nature\, which is naturally compassionate.\nHow to rest in Being\, the heart of who we are.\n\nWhat You Can Expect:\n\nTeachings and Guided Meditations: Engage in insightful teachings and guided meditations to deepen your understanding and experience of compassion.\nDyads and Group Discussions: Connect with fellow participants through structured dyads and open group discussions\, fostering a supportive community.\nQ&A Sessions: Gain clarity and personal insights during interactive Q&A sessions with Caverly Morgan.\nJournaling: Reflect on your experiences and insights through guided journaling exercises.\n\nRecommended\, but not required reading: The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together \n  \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Sacred Homage - Fall Foliage and Nature Meditation at Chuang Yen Monastery
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Sacred Homage – Fall Foliage and Nature Meditation at Chuang Yen Monastery \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nSunday\, October 12th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 3:00pm \nLocation: Meet in the parking lot of Chuang Yen Monastery\n2020 Route 301\, Carmel\, NY 10512\nSee below for more information on carpooling and access via public transportation \n \nJoin us for a contemplative day of meditation and reflection amid the fall foliage at Chuang Yen Monastery in Putnam County. This sacred site\, home to the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere\, has housed Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi and a vibrant monastic community since 2006. \nDesigned by renowned architect I.M. Pei\, the monastery’s serene grounds and elegant halls—the Kuan Yin Hall (1985) and the Great Buddha Hall (1997)\, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama—offer a peaceful setting for spiritual practice. The halls house 10\,000 mini buddhas and many antique Buddha statues. \nPast participants were deeply moved by the beauty and stillness of these sacred spaces\, as well as the opportunity to learn about the monastery’s history\, rituals\, and deep ties to the Buddhist lineage. \nWe’ll begin our day with quiet exploration\, meditating among the walkways and halls as we immerse ourselves in the presence of this living temple. After a lovingly prepared vegetarian lunch offered by monastery volunteers\, we’ll head outdoors to walk the grounds and appreciate the fall foliage\, connecting with the changing season\, the land\, and our practice. We will spend much of the day in silence. \nTestimonial from past participants: \n“Visiting the Chuang Yen Monastery\, learning about its history\, and spending time in its beautiful spaces with Lin and others from New York Insight was a very special treat.” \nAbout Lunch:\nLunch is served from 11:30am – 1:30pm\, and is graciously provided by a team of volunteers who spend their weekends cooking and serving the community. As the monastery relies on donations to continue its work\, a suggested contribution of $7 per person is appreciated to help support this beautiful effort. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch. \nBring: Please feel free to bring your own water and snacks\, and bug/tick repellent. Please make sure to check for ticks after the event. \n\nSun hat and sunscreen\nBackpack to carry what you need (we will be walking around for most of the day)\nOrganic tick repellent (optional)\nOrganic bug repellent (optional)\n\nA Few Guidelines for Your Visit:\nAs we visit a living monastic community\, please be mindful of these guidelines to ensure a respectful and harmonious experience for all \n\nBring only vegetarian foods—no meat\, fish\, or eggs.\nRespect the flora and fauna: Please refrain from picking any plants\, flowers\, or vegetables\, and avoid disturbing or feeding any animals or fish.No smoking or alcohol is allowed anywhere on the premises.\nDrive cautiously: Keep your speed under 15 mph once you enter the monastery grounds\, especially in spring when small animals are more active.\nPark in designated areas only.\nDress appropriately: Please avoid wearing costumes\, tank tops\, or mini skirts.\nNo photography or video is allowed\, and drones are prohibited to maintain the peace and serenity of the space.\n\nLocation and Meeting Time:\n\nLocation: 2020\, Route 301\, Carmel\, NY 10512\nMeeting Time and Location: 10am at the parking lot of the monastery\n\nHow to Get There:\n\nCarpooling: After registration\, please fill out the carpooling survey linked in the confirmation email to let us know if you can offer a ride or need one. The process of walking–outer pilgrimage—often gives rise to insights\, healing\, and a deep sense of letting go—inner pilgrimage. \nDoing this together builds community and mutual belonging. \nDoing this in a major American city brings the sacred into the everyday. \nIn this 12 mile pilgrimage\, visiting Insight meditation teacher nico hase will guide participants in a meditation walk from northern Manhattan to our home ground at New York Insight. The pilgrimage will happen rain or shine. \nThe group will gather at 10:00 at the Met Cloisters. The pilgrimage will end at 115 W 29th Street around 5:00pm\, where nico will offer a dharma talk followed by reflections\, dialogue\, and a brief closing ceremony. \n(See below for a map of our route.) \nThis pilgrimage is open to anyone who can walk ten miles at a brisk pace with infrequent stops.
