SUMMARY:Online: Freedom From the Known - A Conversation on Buddhism and Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Online: Freedom From the Known – A Conversation on Buddhism and Psychotherapy \nwith Mark Epstein and James Shaheen \nThursday\, January 12th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \nJoin us in celebration of the paperback edition of Epstein’s recent book\, The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life\, which The New York Times has called “a warm\, profound and clear-eyed memoir.” \nFor much of his career\, Dr. Epstein kept his beliefs as a Buddhist separate from his work as a psychiatrist. But as he became more forthcoming with his patients about his personal spiritual leanings\, he was surprised how many of them were eager to learn more. The divisions between the psychological\, emotional\, and the spiritual\, he soon realized\, were not as distinct as one might think. In The Zen of Therapy\, Dr. Epstein reflected on a year’s worth of selected sessions with his patients and observed how\, in a given hour\, his Buddhist background influenced his work. Western therapy can be considered a two-person meditation\, he found\, and mindfulness\, much like a good therapist\, can “hold” our awareness for us\, allowing the therapeutic process to unfold\, often in surprising ways. \nThis evening offers a chance for James Shaheen\, Tricycle’s longtime editor in chief\, to talk with Dr. Epstein about the ways meditation has helped\, and occasionally disappointed\, him in his life and work. There will be ample opportunity for questions for those interested in what it has been like to bring the worlds of Buddhism and therapy together for the first time. \nTo purchase a copy of The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life please visit this link. \n \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left or up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Buddhist Practice and Transforming Racism
DESCRIPTION:Online: Buddhist Practice and Transforming Racism\n \nwith Donald Rothberg\n \nThursdays\, January 19th – February 23rd\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n \nIn this six-week course for those who identify as “white\,” we will approach transforming racism inside and outside as an integral part of our spiritual practice\, from a framework of Buddhist teachings and practices. \nThe course will be structured in a traditional way\, into training in wisdom\, meditation\, and ethics (including action). We will explore the Buddha’s rejection of caste in the India of nearly 2600 years ago; perspectives from core Buddhist wisdom teachings helpful for understanding and transforming race and racism; the origins and history of whiteness\, race\, racism\, and multi-racial solidarity; the centrality of mindfulness and heart practices like lovingkindness\, compassion\, forgiveness\, and empathy\, to investigate and transform our conditioning around race and whiteness; working with difficult mind-states\, emotions\, and body states; grounding in ethical integrity and action\, including wise speech; and the importance of community\, including smaller communities that can be supportive home bases\, relatively free of “shame and blame.” \nThe course will integrate sitting meditation with talks\, exercises\, discussion\, small groups\, and about an hour of reading and/or watching video between sessions. \nDonald is offering this course in honor and in the memory of his mother\, Bernice\, who dedicated many years of her life to working for racial justice and the eradication of poverty\, initially in New York. \nSuggested background: In mindfulness practice and basic mindfulness instructions\, received typically through a class or retreat\, and\, if possible\, a regular mindfulness practice and some experience with lovingkindness practice. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels.
