SUMMARY:Online: A Verified Kind of Faith - Buddhism & Addiction Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Online: A Verified Kind of Faith – Buddhism & Addiction Recovery \nwith Walt Opie \nThursday\, June 5th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nFor many of us in recovery from addiction\, the word “faith” can conjure up memories of being forced to participate in organized religion or it can feel related to a so-called “higher power.” \nWhen Buddhist teachings refer to faith\, it’s different. The Buddha himself discouraged people from acting out of blind faith. Instead\, Buddhism describes three ways that faith\, or confidence\, can manifest or build over time\, including: bright faith\, verified faith\, and unshakeable faith. \nAccording to the well-known teacher Gil Fronsdal\, faith in Buddhism is not a belief system but a faculty or a capacity we have that we can develop further. In fact\, faith\, just like recovery\, can be a kind of empowerment. With support from the teachings and others on similar journeys\, we learn how to trust our inner wisdom. We gain a new kind of inner confidence. \nDuring this program\, we will explore the three different types of faith\, as well as how faith in the Buddhist teachings and practices can help keep us on the path of recovery. There will be guided meditation\, a dharma talk\, and time for sharing and discussion. \nPlease join us for this special evening of learning to strengthen our inner resources through the Buddhist teachings. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Online: Resting in the Middle of the Full Catastrophe
DESCRIPTION:Online: Resting in the Middle of the Full Catastrophe\n \nwith Yong Oh\n \nThursday\, June 12th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nThere’s so much to do. There’s never enough time. \nYet\, the demands of life only seem to grow amidst the unfolding of our lives and our world\, personally and collectively. Is there permission to rest our weary bodies and distressed nervous systems? How can we rest\, resource\, and find refuge? \nOver the course of this evening event\, we will explore how rest can permeate our spiritual life and practice in such a way that resting itself becomes a profound and essential doorway on the path of awakening. Drawing from the Buddhist tradition\, we’ll examine how this practice is essential and radical for the times we live in. \nThrough a dharma talk\, practice\, and discussion\, we will reflect on rest as practice and practice as rest\, and examine how both are deeply personal and connected to the world around us. \nJoin guest teacher Yong Oh for a special evening of exploring rest in the middle of catastrophe and learning how to move forward with a wise and compassionate heart. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Free Urban Retreat Info Session and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Free Urban Retreat Info Session and Q&A \nwith Leslie Booker and Dalila Bothwell \nFriday\, June 20th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn July\, New York Insight is holding its first ever non-residential retreat\, designed to help integrate practice into your daily life and life into your practice. \nWe often think of retreat as a chance to get away—traveling to a quiet meditation center in a serene natural setting. But for those of us who live in cities\, this can create a split: retreat happens there\, life happens here. Practicing together in the same city where we live\, work\, and navigate daily challenges creates a powerful opportunity: we can begin to carry the clarity and presence of retreat into the rhythms of ordinary life. \nDuring this live Q&A session\, teachers Leslie Booker and Dalila Bothwell will explain the format of this summer’s retreat and answer any questions you may have about embarking on a weeklong commitment to meditation practice. \nReserve your spot now for a special sneak peek into a New York Insight’s first-ever weeklong retreat! \nAttendance at this event is encouraged but not required to register for July’s retreat. \nYou can learn more and register for the retreat itself here. \nIn-Person Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:Online: Somatically Sensing – Knowing Thoughts and Emotions through Sensations
DESCRIPTION:Online: Somatically Sensing – Knowing Thoughts and Emotions through Sensations \nwith Jill Satterfield \nTuesday\, June 24th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n \nWhen we’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed\, our instinct is often to get caught in the story—cycling through the thoughts and emotions we believe are to blame. This can lead to rumination\, self-criticism\, and even more distress. \nBut there is another way to meet our experience. \nThis program offers a direct\, embodied approach: turning attention to the felt sense of thoughts and emotions—their physical expression in the body. By exploring how thoughts and feelings show up as sensations\, we can relate to them without getting pulled into identification\, judgment\, or narrative. \nThrough guided practice and investigation\, participants will experience firsthand how this simple shift in awareness can help release emotional knots and bring insight. This approach also reveals how consciousness takes form—and how body and mind interact moment by moment.

SUMMARY:Online: Holding Space for the Immigrant Community
DESCRIPTION:Online: Holding Space for the Immigrant Community \nwith Wildecy de Fátima Jury \nThursday\, June 26th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n \nImmigrant communities are facing a challenging time right now. At the moment these communities are very vulnerable and subjected to a tremendous amount of fear\, worry\, and aggression. How do we work with these difficulties? What can we do to take care of ourselves in uncertain times? \nThe Buddha discovered that it’s possible to overcome mental and emotional challenges and transform our suffering into awakening. \nJoin teacher Wildecy de Fátima Jury for an evening reflection on the Buddha’s teachings on the Four Noble Truths and the Seven Factors of Awakening. Together we’ll discuss how to use these lessons to avoid the trap of despair. \nThis event is open to anyone who has immigrated to the US\, whether recently or in the past. We also warmly welcome anyone who identifies as the child\, spouse\, partner\, or family member of a loved one who has immigrated. \nWe hope to offer a welcoming and nurturing space for all participants to share their experiences\, their anxiety\, apprehension\, and any other feelings they are experiencing. The intention of this class is to utilize the beauty of the dharma as a pillar of hope and apply the Buddha’s wisdom to our present moment. \nRegistration:\nPlease RSVP here. Although there is no registration fee and your presence remains the greatest gift\, please consider making an offering through the form below. Much gratitude and appreciation for whatever you may offer. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Dharma Practice Amidst Love\, Grief & Helplessness
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Dharma Practice Amidst Love\, Grief & Helplessness\n \nwith Matthew Brensilver\n \nSunday\, June 29th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n  \nThe ascendancy of greed\, hatred\, and delusion in our public life can overwhelm the heart. We have a lot of love to give\, but it’s not always clear how to spend it. In compassion\, our heart trembles in the face of suffering. When our love feels insufficient to alleviate that suffering\, we recognize grief as an irreducible aspect of a committed life. At some point\, our heart must rest. \nCompassion is counterbalanced by equanimity—we stop bartering with samsara and recognize the ungovernability of suffering. Through dharma practice\, we learn to cultivate love in the face of helplessness\, and to stay open-hearted without burning out or turning away. \nNew York Insight is excited to welcome back Matthew Brensilver\, PhD\, a teacher in the Insight tradition who regularly offers retreats at Spirit Rock and the Insight Retreat Center\, for a special evening of practice\, teaching\, and dialogue. \nTogether\, we’ll explore: \n\nHow to sustain compassion without being overwhelmed by grief\nThe role of equanimity in staying grounded amidst suffering\nWhat it means to love when we can’t fix or change the world\nHow the dharma helps us rest the heart without closing it\n\nAll are welcome\, and all proceeds from this event go to benefit NYI. \nRegistration\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity!
