SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Beyond the Separate Self - Emptiness and the Freedom of Awareness
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Beyond the Separate Self – Emptiness and the Freedom of Awareness \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and My Tong\n \nThursday\, June 18th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWhat if the aliveness we call ‘me’ is not a solid thing at all\, but vast and open like the sky? \nIn this session\, we begin with meditation on awareness itself\, resting in the nature of consciousness and touching the spacious freedom that is always already here. From this ground\, we explore the teaching of not-self through playful group forms that invite us to hold and be held by one another’s stories. Together\, we discover that when the sense of a separate self softens\, what remains is not emptiness as absence\, but emptiness as connection\, intimacy\, and belonging. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. You are welcome exactly as you are\, with curiosity and a willingness to be present. \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is offered one Thursday a month from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET and is offered in a hybrid format. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, My Tong guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. You are welcome to register for a single session\, select multiple dates\, or join the full series at a discounted rate. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nRegister for one session or the full series (at a discount!) below.\n2026: June 18 | July 9 | August 6 \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\nIn-Person Full Series\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\nOnline Full Series\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Touching the Sacred in the Ordinary – Finding Meaning\, Connection\, and Aliveness Right Where We Are \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts\n \nThursday\, July 9th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWhat if the sacred is not something we have to seek out\, but something quietly waiting for us in the midst of our ordinary lives? \nThrough meditation\, embodied practice\, shared inquiry\, and moments of stillness\, we arrive more fully in the present moment\, softening the habit of overlooking what is here. As we slow down and listen deeply\, we begin to notice how meaning\, connection\, and aliveness naturally reveal themselves. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Silencing Your Inner Critic - A Guide to Self-Compassion in Tough Times
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Silencing Your Inner Critic – A Guide to Self-Compassion in Tough Times \nwith Gary Singer \nThursday\, July 16th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nEven\, and perhaps especially\, when the world seems out of control\, the practice of self-love is an essential tool to make sure we remain connected to our values and sense of right and wrong. \nIndeed\, compassion is foundational to the Buddha’s teachings. That means compassion for all beings\, even ourselves. Nevertheless\, most of us have an easier time extending compassion to others than to ourselves. \nOver the course of two hours\, we’ll use mindfulness to investigate how we treat ourselves in the privacy of our own minds. Why does our Inner Critic tend to treat ourselves worse than we would anyone else? What stories might we be telling about ourselves and others that might simply be untrue? Can we stop the incessant comparison to others? Can we finally befriend ourselves? \nTogether\, we’ll touch upon how we might become aware of difficult emotions\, recognize the common humanity in our struggles\, and accept ourselves with greater kindness and compassion. The more we’re at peace with ourselves\, the more peaceful we are with others and the world. \nExperienced meditators and those brand new to meditation are welcome. \nBring your curiosity! \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below to attend in-person. SUMMARY:In-Person: Relax and Settle the Mind - A Sound Bath Meditation
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Relax and Settle the Mind – A Sound Bath Meditation \nwith Lisa Cooper \nFriday\, July 31st\, 2026 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nMany of us move through our days feeling overstimulated\, mentally busy\, or disconnected from the body. In Insight meditation\, the breath is often the primary anchor—but it can sometimes be difficult to settle the mind or sustain attention. \nSound offers another way of supporting awareness. The resonant tones of the bowls provide a steady field of sensation that can make it easier to rest attention in the body and allow the mind to settle more naturally. \nThis session uses crystal singing bowls to create sustained vibrations that can be felt as well as heard\, supporting a direct\, embodied experience of meditation. The practice begins with awareness of the breath\, a body scan\, and a brief guided meditation\, followed by an extended period of sound. \nSound can serve as a gentle anchor for attention\, offering a continuous thread of awareness that supports both relaxation and presence. As the body settles\, participants may find it easier to remain with their experience moment to moment. \nParticipants may experience: \n\nA deep sense of relaxation and nervous system regulation\nGreater connection to the body as a foundation for meditation\nA quieter\, more settled mind and an increased sense of ease\n\nNo prior experience with meditation or sound baths is needed. \nJoin us to explore meditation through listening\, and to cultivate greater ease\, balance\, and presence in both practice and daily life. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: This Is It - The Opportunity of This Moment
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: This Is It – The Opportunity of This Moment \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts\n \nThursday\, August 6th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWhat if this moment—just as it is—is already enough? In this closing session of the Body Remembers Freedom series\, we turn toward the immediacy of our lived experience\, discovering that the freedom we’ve been exploring is not somewhere else\, but right here in how we meet this moment. Through meditation\, embodied practice\, and shared inquiry\, we integrate what has been touched throughout the series—allowing insight\, presence\, and compassion to settle into the body and take root in our daily lives. We also take time to reconnect with our deepest aspirations for how we want to live\, sensing what feels most true and life-giving now. Whether you are returning or joining for the first time\, this session offers a space to arrive fully\, trust your inner knowing\, and explore what it means to live what we remember—right here\, in this moment. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, Linds Roberts guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Where Meditation Leads - Into the Stream of Life Just Happening
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Where Meditation Leads – Into the Stream of Life Just Happening \nwith Jeff Warren \nThursday\, August 13th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWhere does meditation and / or committed practice lead? \nOver the course of this evening program\, teacher Jeff Warren will lead a discussion into how meditation can help us drop from the turbulent surface layer of mind and circumstance\, into the deeper stream of life just happening. This kind of awareness is both ordinary and sacred\, and available to anyone at any time. \nArguably\, the point of meditation practice is to help us connect to that kind of awareness or being. Through short guided sessions and open discussion\, we’ll explore the core skills of practice\, and how they can be customized to fit our circumstances and wiring. We’ll explore some ideas about mental health\, and maybe even brainstorm together about how we might create greater access to practice and practice communities. \nHopefully you’ll leave feeling connected to a larger movement of care\, and excited about the creative possibilities of practice. Maybe you’ll relate to your own mental health quirks in a more welcoming and less stigmatizing way. Because understanding that our specific quirks and challenges also have their place is one of the core reorientations of practice! \nJoin us to \n\nLearn about or refresh meditation practice\nBuild connection and trust in yourself\nDiscover the best ways to meditate for your unique mental wiring\nDrop into a space of calm underneath the surface turbulence of life\n\nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below to attend in-person. SUMMARY:Online: A Buddhist Guide to Living with Chronic Pain and Illness
DESCRIPTION:Online: A Buddhist Guide to Living with Chronic Pain and Illness \nwith Toni Bernhard\n \nSunday\, August 23rd\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 7:00pm ET \n \nIt’s no fun to get sick\, have little stamina\, or experience chronic physical pain. Aside from reminding us that life is uncertain\, unpredictable\, and often does not conform to our wishes\, these challenges can provide a measure of peace if we know how to respond skillfully. \nToni Bernhard\, the acclaimed author of How to Be Sick\, returns to NYI for a two-hour online program about adjusting gracefully to life with chronic pain and illness. She’ll use the Buddha’s teachings to address the specific challenges that those who are sick or in pain face. \n \nMany of these challenges are faced by everyone in life\, whether healthy or not\, such as feeling let down by others. Together\, through discussion\, reflection\, and meditation\, we’ll explore how to cope with uncertainty about the future\, the relentlessness of symptoms\, feeling dismissed by doctors\, managing loneliness\, caregiver burnout\, and several other topics. \nEveryone is welcome to participate\, regardless of experience with meditation or Buddhism. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity!
