SUMMARY:Online: Ungendering the Heart - The Brahma Viharas Are Contemporary Medicine for Modern Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: Ungendering the Heart – The Brahma Viharas are Contemporary Medicine for Modern Times \nwith Arisika Razak \nWednesday\, August 3rd\, 2022 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n \n\n  \nIn the Buddha’s teachings on the Brahma Viharas\, or Divine Abodes\, we are instructed to firmly direct the body-mind towards the states of metta (loving kindness)\, karuna (compassion) mudita (sympathetic joy)\, and upekkha (equanimity)\, the states in which all enlightened beings rest. \nWhile metta is the quality most associated with the heart\, these qualities\, when taken together\, are aligned with the fourth stress response\, that of “tend and befriend”\, a strategy found in many mammalian species where care for the young involves not only the birth parent/s\, but the kin who provide care as socially engaged uncles\, aunts\, grandparents\, etc. \nThe Brama Viharas encourage us – regardless of sex or gender – to cultivate the qualities of the heart that have often been described as “feminine” in patriarchal societies\, but which are actually human qualities that have supported human survival over the many millenia of our existence. \nEmphasis on the Brahma Viharas can provide an antidote to patriarchal assumptions about “male” and “female” behavior\, remindings us that these constructions are culturally scripted rather than biologically based – and they can provide a sense of freedom and wholeness that is both modern and timeless. \nJoin us for this special evening discussion! All are welcome. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nClick HERE to open a new browser for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Stand Up and Sit Down (The Courage of a Noble Heart)
DESCRIPTION:Online: Stand Up and Sit Down (The Courage of a Noble Heart)\n \nwith Joseph Mauricio\n \nThursday\, August 11th\, 2022 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nWe are living in challenging times\, and while it’s tempting to bypass suffering\, the challenges of our life are part of the world we’ve inherited. The problems will be waiting for us\, nonetheless. \nWith meditation practice\, we train the mind to redirect the impulses that trigger our defensive nature toward a mindful approach. When faced with difficulty\, we might choose to recoil\, lash out\, or embrace extreme solutions. But\, acting out without awareness creates further suffering. On the other hand\, when we act in\, shutting our feelings inside\, we are causing self-harm and depleting our life force. If we close down from the pain\, we also cut ourselves off from caring. However\, with meditation practice\, we can develop the resilience to choose a middle way between acting out and repressing. \nJoin longtime meditation teacher Joseph Mauricio for an online evening exploring how meditation builds the resilience we need to face our life. \nThrough mindfulness and awareness practice\, we learn to honor ourselves\, our feelings\, and our world by sitting down on the earth and accepting the present as it is. Then we can respond to situations with clarity and strength. In the Bodhisattva tradition\, this is called “noble heart.” And from that noble heart\, we rise up in an expression of willingness to remain engaged in our world no matter what storms arise. SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness of Feeling Tone - Why Does It Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness of Feeling Tone – Why Does It Matter? \nwith Bruni Dávila \nWednesday\, August 17th\, 2022 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET \nIn our daily lives\, our responses and actions are often driven by what we like or dislike. \nIn meditation practice\, mindfulness of the feeling-tone of our experience: whether it is pleasant\, unpleasant\, or neutral\, is the second foundation of mindfulness offered by the Buddha. \nPracticing with the feeling-tone of experience can be transformative\, powerful\, and liberating. During this evening discussion with Insight Meditation Teacher Bruni Dávila\, we will explore how we can gain insight into the nature of experiences and discover that we have more choices on how to engage life with ease\, peace\, and contentment. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nClick HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Buddhist Wisdom Perspectives and the Transformation of Racism
DESCRIPTION:Online: Buddhist Wisdom Perspectives and the Transformation of Racism\n \nwith Donald Rothberg\, PhD\n \nFriday\, August 19th\, 2022 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET\n \n\n \nAs many Buddhist practitioners increasingly support greater diversity and inclusion in their communities\, commit to their own inner work transforming the racial conditioning that they receive\, and look to find ways to act in the larger society\, the resources of Buddhist practice can be of great value. \nIn this evening talk\, Donald Rothberg will focus on the core wisdom teachings of the Buddha\, integrated with attention to the history of race\, whiteness and blackness\, and racism in the English colonies and later the United States. How are the phenomena of race and racism in particular rooted in greed and ignorance\, individual and collective\, that then lead to hatred and massive dukkha? How can more clarity about these wisdom teachings and historical perspectives guide our current practice to transform racism? \nDonald’s perspectives are grounded in his work in socially engaged Buddhism over the last decades and his more recent offering of retreats on Buddhist practice and transforming racism (for people racialized as “white”). He has been inspired by the pioneering Buddhist work of Ruth King\, Larry Yang\, Gina Sharpe\, Rhonda Magee\, Lama Rod Owens\, angel Kyodo williams\, and Chenxing Han\, among many others. Donald is offering this talk in honor and in the memory of his mother\, Bernice\, born in the Bronx\, who dedicated many years of her life to working for racial justice and the eradication of poverty\, in New York\, Maryland\, Washington\, D.C.\, and Richmond\, Virginia. \nThe evening session will include a period of meditation\, followed by a talk and discussion. \nDonald Rothberg will also be leading a daylong program on Exploring and Practicing Anattā (Not-Self) on Saturday\, August 20th\, 2022 from 10:00am – 5:00pm ET. SUMMARY:Online: The Thinning of the Self - Exploring and Practicing Anattā (Not-Self)
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Thinning of the Self – Exploring and Practicing Anattā (Not-Self) \nwith Donald Rothberg \nSaturday\, August 20th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \n \n\n  \nThe teaching of anattā (“not-self”) points to one of the three fundamental areas of liberating insight taught by the Buddha\, along with the teachings on anicca (impermanence) and on dukkha (usually translated as “suffering”). Yet anattā can be very challenging and confusing for contemporary practitioners. Is there “no self” (sometimes anattā is translated as “no self”)? How do we understand our senses of individuality\, identity\, ancestry and ethnicity\, and vocation? How do we address our own personal experiences of woundedness\, trauma\, and oppression? Are these all simply to be “transcended”? How is a sense of self\, as the Buddha taught\, in many ways important for spiritual development\, and how is working with our own individual conditioning\, whether psychological or social in origin\, central to our liberation? How do we integrate attending to such conditioning with opening as well beyond the habitual sense of self? \nIn this daylong\, we will explore these vital questions primarily in a practical way. Using the metaphors of “thinning the self” and working with a “thick” sense of self\, we will cover three aspects of practice: (1) cultivating\, in several ways\, the “thinning” of the self\, both in meditation and in everyday life\, including working with the Five Skandhas or “aggregates” of experience (a main way that the Buddha taught anattā); (2) tracking and working with different manifestations of a “thick” sense of self\, both as appearing in experience and as hidden to awareness; and (3) opening beyond a fixed sense of self\, as awareness\, compassion\, and responsiveness deepen. \nDonald Rothberg will also be giving an evening talk on Buddhist Wisdom Perspectives and the Transformation of Racism on Friday\, August 19th\, 2022 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET. SUMMARY:Online: Peaceful Mind\, Peaceful Heart
DESCRIPTION:Online: Peaceful Mind\, Peaceful Heart \nwith Lani Miller \nWednesdays\, August 24th – September 14th\, 2022 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n \n\n  \n“Praise and blame\, Gain and Loss\, Pleasure and Pain\, Fame and Disrepute are the eight worldly winds. They ceaselessly change. As a mountain is unshaken by the wind so the heart of a wise person is unmoved by all of the changes on this earth.” -The Buddha \nThe possibilities for us to be truly happy and peaceful in this life greatly increase when we are able to respond to life’s changes with awareness and balance. \nThe Buddha taught that when we are able to open to the truth of impermanence with the balance of equanimity we more open to the possibility of a peaceful mind and heart. Through our own direct experience\, we come to realize that we have a choice and can let go of trying to control what cannot be controlled. By doing so we discover greater and greater happiness can come our way. \nIn this four week course we will explore the beautiful practice of equanimity together. We will learn from observing our individual patterns of reactivity and noticing how it feels when we are able to respond to life’s circumstances rather than reacting to them. \nThe course will include time for meditation\, along with supportive practices and processes to help us explore how to bring the Buddha’s teachings on Equanimity into our lives. There will also be time for group sharing.
