SUMMARY:Postponed: Seeing in the Dark - The Role of the Dreamer in Collective Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: Seeing in the Dark – The Role of the Dreamer in Collective Awakening \nwith Deborah Eden Tull \nDue to storm Ian\, this daylong retreat is postponed. \nAs our world changes physically and socio-politically\, and more people feel uprooted by global uncertainty\, there is an invitation to dream a more life affirming dream\, on behalf of our collective. One of the gifts of uncertainty is that it requires us to recognize and let go of unconscious biases that have been passed down for generations. These include the perception that splits into opposites and values light over dark\, speed over slowing down\, productivity over attunement\, and the rational mind over intuition\, dreaming\, and conscious use of the imagination. Awakening requires that we soften the habit of binary perception and restore our natural capacity to see clearly in the dark. \nOur collective stories\, while having fed generations of limiting beliefs\, are not who we are. In this time of change\, consciously using our creative imagination on behalf of the whole is perhaps the most important practice there is. \nEngaged meditation invites us to see beyond the seemingly set-in-stone assumptions that the mind of limitation insists upon… and maintain awareness of fluidity and conscious choice within what appears to be solid. This requires letting go of habit\, of passive consumption\, and our investment in collective limiting beliefs. It involves becoming a steward of one’s attention and imagination\, willing to dream on behalf of life. \nThis day-long retreat is inspired by Eden’s newest book\, Luminous Darkness: An Engaged Buddhist Approach to Embracing the Unknown (For Personal and Collective Awakening). The day will include meditation and dharma talks and Q&A\, experiential practices\, and relational mindfulness to help us explore\, in a down-to-earth\, embodied way\, the role of the dreamer in personal and collective awakening. \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please contact registration@nyimc.org. \n

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur - A Day of Silence and Reflection
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur – A Day of Silence and Reflection \nwith Jon Aaron and Elaine Retholtz \nWednesday\, October 5th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 7:00pm ET \nYom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement\, a day when\, as a community\, Jews are asked to reflect on their actions of the past year and to ask for atonement for any actions that were unskillful. In support of this day\, for the past 19 years\, NYI has hosted a day of silence and reflection. \nThis year New York Insight will continue the annual Yom Kippur tradition. As we begin to emerge into a different phase of the pandemic\, we are happy to offer a hybrid event. All are welcome to participate\, however\, there are only limited spaces for those who wish to participate in person\, so pre-registration is absolutely necessary. In addition\, while we acknowledge the culture of “shul hopping” – coming for a part of the day and moving on\, we ask that you register only for the part(s) of the day that you are committed to attend\, so that as many as possible can be accommodated. \nAs always\, there will be meditations focused on the idea of right action\, the difference between guilt and remorse\, the laws of karma\, forgiveness\, and lovingkindness. There will also be an opportunity for mindful discussion on the Buddhist perspective on atonement. This year\, especially\, in the context of moving out of isolation into an in person event\, we will be emphasizing the jewel of Sangha – community. \nAll are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast. \nThis daylong retreat is a dana (donation) based event\, with donations being divided between New York Insight and Buddhist Global Relief. SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Elaine Retholtz \n\nCourse: Wednesdays\, October 12th – December 7th 2022 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET\nDaylong: Saturday\, November 19th\, 2022 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET\nPlease note: This course will skip November 23rd\, 2022 due to the Thanksgiving Holiday \n \n\n  \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfilment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25 – 30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 41 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to regulate emotions\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450\nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need for other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. Email registration@nyimc.org for more info. \nParticipants may register after the orientation for this class but must still view a recorded orientation\, complete the pre-class questionnaire and arrange a pre-class interview with the teacher. Once you have registered\, the teacher will contact you to make these arrangements. \nCourse Sessions:\nWednesdays\, October 12th through December 7th\, 2022 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET\n(skip November 23rd – Thanksgiving week) \nDaylong Session:\nSaturday\, November 19th from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm ET \nCourse Registration: Registration is closed. Please email registration@nyimc.org for last-minute options.\n  \nYour registration for the course includes your RSVP to the orientation.\nIf you are registering via a mobile devices such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the form if it is partially obscured or cut off. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma \nwith Jon Aaron \nThursdays\, October 13th – November 10th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\nLocation for In-Person: New York Zendo (Shobo-Ji) on 223 East 67th Street\, NYC \nThe teachings of the Dharma are teachings about life. When we truly take the Dharma in and take refuge in the Dharma our life changes—sometimes in obvious ways\, sometimes in ways we don’t even see. In formal practice\, we experience the dharma in one way\, but it is how we take it into our life—our work\, our relationships\, our illnesses etc—that is truly important. \nIf you are new to the Dharma this will be an ideal introduction\, and like any great teachings\, if you have been practicing for many years your relationship to the teachings will have changed as well. \nThis program will be Online or In-Person. \nFinding Freedom within the Changing Nature of Experience\nThursdays\, October 13th – November 10th\, 2022 from 10:00am – Noon ET (5 classes)\nThe Five Aggregates of Clinging will be the primary teaching explored in this part. This map of the self allows us to both understand and experience the quality of anatta – not-self- the key to freedom. \nFor these weeks we will be grounded in a book by Ben Connelly titled Inside Vasubandhu’s Yogacara. The Yogacara is a later teaching which straddles the early Buddhist teachings heading into the Mahayana traditions. \nA follow-up course: Embodying Love\nThursdays\, January 12th – February 9th\, 2023 from 10:00am – Noon ET (5 classes)\nAs our practice deepens\, and the boundary between self and other softens\, the unconditional nature of love arises. At the same time\, mindful cultivation through formal practice of the boundless qualities of lovingkindness\, compassion\, resonant joy and equanimity can open the lens of wisdom and break through the barriers which have accumulated over lifetimes. For many\, resentments are a common obstruction to opening the heart and the practice of forgiveness becomes an essential key to these abodes. \nA follow-up course: Finding Balance in All That We Do\nThursdays\, February 16th – March 16th\, 2023 from 10:00am – Noon ET (5 classes)\nThe last of the Seven Awakening Factors\, the last of the Paramis (Ten Perfections) and the Fourth of the Divine Abodes\, equanimity is a quality of freedom which leads to appropriate response. In the world we live in this is a quality of strength and balance imbued with Lovingkindness \nNYI’s Covid Protocol for In-Person Indoors Programs:\nAll participants must be fully vaccinated and have received a Booster shot – Proof of vaccination and booster is required.\nAll participants must register in advance before attending the program.\nAll participants must wear masks at all times.\nDisclaimer:\nProcedures adhere to current CDC\, NY State\, NYC\, and New York Zendo Shobo-Ji guidelines.\nChanges may be applied at any time\, based on these third-party guidelines. \nAll in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \nFor the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nFinding Freedom within the Changing Nature of Experience\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, click HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nFollow-Up Course: Embodying Love\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, click HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nFollow-Up Course: Finding Balance in All That We Do\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, click HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Lessons From the Fall - The Art of Letting Go
DESCRIPTION:Online: Lessons From the Fall – The Art of Letting Go\n \nwith Mona Chopra\n \nSaturday\, October 15th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nIn this half day workshop\, we will honor the fall season and its profound and ever-relevant teaching – the art of letting go. Just as trees let go – leaves change colors and fall away\, offering nourishment to the earth\, enabling space for new life to come through\, supporting a new season to emerge – how can we encourage such processes within ourselves? How do trees let go of leaves when their time has come? What are the “leaves” in our lives that are asking to be let go of? What beliefs\, ideas\, habits\, patterns? What is holding us back? What may we be holding onto? And – what would be possible if we let these old leaves go? \nDrawing on the wisdom of the Buddha dharma\, participants will be guided on an inner journey. Through meditation\, contemplation\, journaling\, breathwork\, and mindful movement (drawn from qi gong and yoga)\, we will make space for greater awareness to arise\, nurture compassionate acceptance of what is\, and\, through practicing together\, support one another in the courageous and liberating art of letting go. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new window for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Back to Basics to Strengthen Your Practice
DESCRIPTION:Online: Back to Basics to Strengthen Your Practice\n \nwith Bart van Melik\n \nFridays\, October 14th-28th\, 2022 | 9:00am – 10:30am ET \n \n\n  \nThe Buddha taught us to live in harmony with the way things are and to awaken to the truth of suffering and how to end it. This might sound like a lofty goal – especially in the midst of a global pandemic. \nHowever it can be very supportive to practice the most basic instructions the Buddha gave: to fully know of what it’s like to be human in every moment. \nStep by step during this online course\, we’ll look at the Buddha’s teachings on welcoming ALL of our experiences – even the presence of challenging emotions. This course will offer empowering instructions enabling us to know the immediate truth of our experience which is so worthy of our application. \nBeginners and experienced practitioners are welcome. SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness\, Neuroplasticity and Emotional Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness\, Neuroplasticity and Emotional Resilience\n \nwith Dr. Paul Epstein\, ND\n \nSaturday\, October 29th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nTrain your mind and heart\, change your brain for health and healing. \nTraining in mindful awareness brings the choice of relating to our experience with wisdom and compassion which changes the brain creating new neural pathways. Evidence shows that mindfulness increases emotional resilience which supports us to learn to “roll with the punches” and better cope with stress and adversity so we can more easily bounce back from difficulty without lasting negative impacts. Through mindfulness and compassion practice and teachings\, we will cultivate and enhance aspects of resilience. We will explore working with difficult emotions\, optimism\, accepting change and uncertainty\, and building a sense of humor. Our mind can be a healer or a slayer by how we choose to relate to our life’s experiences. \nWe can move beyond surviving life’s challenges to actively participating in our own deep healing while building resilience for a brighter present and future.
