SUMMARY:Online: Beginning Anew - A Winter Retreat for the New Year
DESCRIPTION:Online: Beginning Anew – A Winter Retreat for the New Year\n \nwith Mona Chopra\n \nSaturday\, January 7th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n  \nAs we start a new year and begin again\, we have an invitation to ask ourselves anew – how do I want to be in the world? \nSo often there is a gap between what we most deeply want\, what we believe\, what we value\, our aspirations\, what we know to be true – and how we end up living our day to day lives. The busyness of life\, the “noise” of the world\, the seemingly endless chatter in our own minds – these often obscure the deeper truths from us. We remain caught in the hamster wheel\, day after day\, making it difficult to fully\, truly\, wholly and intimately inhabit our lives. \nIn this half day retreat\, we will return to the natural world as our teacher\, honoring the rhythm and pace of the winter season\, and beginning the process of slowing down\, moving into deeper states of yin. Just as trees in the winter become bare\, revealing the basic skeleton\, we too will practice becoming bare\, and noticing what is revealed in that emptiness. We will connect with the primordial element of Water and the waterways within ourselves. How can we bring greater fluidity\, clarity\, ease\, and flow? \nThrough meditation\, contemplation\, mindful movement and journaling\, we will explore stillness and movement\, silence and sound\, spaciousness and the paramita of patience\, and we will be invited into ever-deepening states of quietude and rest. Within this space\, we will let be\, and listen. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is obscured.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Freedom From the Known - A Conversation on Buddhism and Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Online: Freedom From the Known – A Conversation on Buddhism and Psychotherapy \nwith Mark Epstein and James Shaheen \nThursday\, January 12th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \nJoin us in celebration of the paperback edition of Epstein’s recent book\, The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life\, which The New York Times has called “a warm\, profound and clear-eyed memoir.” \nFor much of his career\, Dr. Epstein kept his beliefs as a Buddhist separate from his work as a psychiatrist. But as he became more forthcoming with his patients about his personal spiritual leanings\, he was surprised how many of them were eager to learn more. The divisions between the psychological\, emotional\, and the spiritual\, he soon realized\, were not as distinct as one might think. In The Zen of Therapy\, Dr. Epstein reflected on a year’s worth of selected sessions with his patients and observed how\, in a given hour\, his Buddhist background influenced his work. Western therapy can be considered a two-person meditation\, he found\, and mindfulness\, much like a good therapist\, can “hold” our awareness for us\, allowing the therapeutic process to unfold\, often in surprising ways. \nThis evening offers a chance for James Shaheen\, Tricycle’s longtime editor in chief\, to talk with Dr. Epstein about the ways meditation has helped\, and occasionally disappointed\, him in his life and work. There will be ample opportunity for questions for those interested in what it has been like to bring the worlds of Buddhism and therapy together for the first time. \nTo purchase a copy of The Zen of Therapy: Uncovering a Hidden Kindness in Life please visit this link. \n \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left or up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Meditation as an Act of Healing - Working with Fear and Anxiety
DESCRIPTION:Online: Meditation as an Act of Healing – Working with Fear and Anxiety \n \nwith Joseph Mauricio\n \nThursday\, January 19th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nThese are challenging times. Learning to work with fear and anxiety is an important practice for anyone trying to maintain balance in their lives. Meditation can be an act of healing that allows us to reconnect to our humanity. Each time we put down the doomscrolling and return to the present\, we reclaim our sanity. \nThe regularity of daily practice helps build resilience and emotional balance.  When we have stability\, we can recognize the anxiety-based behaviors that actually increase insecurity and isolation. Then\, by returning to the present we can choose to turn from punishing defensive behaviors toward healing and reconnection. \nWe can turn back to our humanity. \nJoin Senior Meditation Teacher Joseph Mauricio for an evening of instruction\, discussion\, and inspiration. We will discuss the 4 R’s of mindful awareness: Recognition\, Release\, Return and Relax. \nThis event is open to anyone with any level of meditation experience. The only requirement is a willingness to be human. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Integrating Social and Personal Healing and Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Online: Integrating Social and Personal Healing and Liberation\n \nwith Ben Connelly\n \nSaturday\, January 21st\, 2023 |10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nHow can we heal ourselves and our communities? How does our personal conduct\, wellness\, suffering\, and trauma relate to interpersonal and transpersonal systems? How can we give our lives to universal liberation without sacrificing our own well-being? These are the questions at the heart of Yogacara Buddhism\, which brings Early Buddhist and Mahayana thought and practice into an integrated approach to joyful\, compassionate\, altruistic living. \nThis offering will be based around the great Yogacara teacher Vasubandhu’s Treatise on Three Natures. We will investigate how these teachings correlate to contemporary liberative approaches such as trauma informed practice\, Thich Nhat Hanh’s “engaged Buddhism\,” and non-violent social movements rooted in universal love. SUMMARY:Online: Insight 101 – A Six Week Meditation Beginner’s Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Insight 101 – A Six Week Meditation Beginner’s Course\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \nMondays\, January 23rd – March 6th\, 2023 (skip Feb. 20) | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \n\n  \nThere are many types of meditation and many reasons why one might be drawn to it. Meditation can be a powerful way to reduce stress. It can also help us to understand and relate to challenging feelings in healthier ways. \nAlong with these possible benefits\, and perhaps most importantly\, meditation offers us the opportunity to learn to be fully present and open to whatever is happening in our own experience\, just as it is. Through this kind attention\, happiness and peace grow in our lives; we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves and bring this awareness into our relationships and the world we share. \nIf you’ve been wanting to learn how to meditate or refresh and renew the meditation practice you already have\, we invite you to join this six-week meditation course to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) meditation in a warm\, supportive environment. \nWe will emphasize experiential practice\, including instructions for sitting and walking meditation\, and explore how we can bring this practice of presence into our everyday lives. \nClasses will include time for practice\, talks\, guidance from the teacher\, and plenty of time for sharing and Q&A. There will be home practice assignments each week to support you in establishing and/or sustaining your practice. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open a new browser for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels.
