SUMMARY:Online: The House We Live In - Virtue\, Wisdom\, and Pluralism
DESCRIPTION:Online: The House We Live In – Virtue\, Wisdom\, and Pluralism \n \nwith Seth Zuihō Segall\n \nThursday\, March 2nd\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nOur society is suffering from economic inequality; a continuing legacy of racism\, sexism\, and homo- and trans-phobia; growing anxiety and depression in the young and deaths of despair among the middle aged; increasing political and affective polarization; an overvaluation of wealth\, popularity\, and fame; and a failure to adequately address climate change. While liberalism\, pluralism\, and democracy are under sustained attack from right-wing forces\, liberal democracies are failing to cultivate and transmit the values\, wisdom\, and virtues that promote individual and collective flourishing. \nOur problem is not a lack of possible solutions\, but a lack of a consensus on what makes lives meaningful and worthwhile. This is an ethical question that calls for a renewed understanding of human flourishing and the wisdom and virtues that make it possible. \nIn this talk\, Zen Buddhist priest and clinical psychologist Seth Zuihō Segall explores the commonalities between Buddhist\, Confucian\, and Aristotelean approaches to virtue and wisdom. We will examine the moral and intellectual virtues that promote flourishing\, the diversity of ways in which we flourish\, and the factors all flourishing lives share. Finally\, we will address the problem of talking to each other across political and cultural divides\, affirming the necessity of discovering ways to live together despite seemingly incommensurable differences. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: There Is More to Death Than Dying
DESCRIPTION:Online: There Is More to Death Than Dying\n \nwith Amy Selzer\, Jon Aaron\, & Nancy Glimm \n \nSunday\, March 5th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET\n \n\n \nRecollecting Our Good Qualities Before We Die \nAs a final daylong in this series on living with the nature to die\, we will take the time to explore our best qualities. This reflection is so important though many of us need the reminder to do it. \nWe will spend time identifying and discovering the causes and conditions that support our good qualities. The Buddha spoke of two superheroes that protect the world. These are Hiri\, conscience or postive shame\, and Ottappa\, concern for the results of our actions. Looking at these two qualities\, we will observe our personal sense of integrity\, and our understanding of what is wholesome and unwholesome. \nWe will look at other supports as well such as the refuges\, precepts\, fierce friendships and more. The day will include a writing exercise\, movement\, meditation both sitting and walking\, break-out rooms\, dharma talks and sharing. \nAll levels of practice are welcome. Why wait\, let’s practice now! \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off. SUMMARY:Online: Obstacles to Practice - Exploring the Five Hindrances
DESCRIPTION:Online: Obstacles to Practice – Exploring the Five Hindrances\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \nMondays\, March 13th – April 10th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \n\n \nMake a resolution to begin or deepen in your meditation practice in 2023. \nThis winter\, we will begin with an introduction to mindfulness meditation\, focusing on the Satipatthana sutta – or the four areas where mindfulness should be developed. In subsequent courses we will be exploring how to cultivate mindfulness in various aspects of our lives through: \n•Exploring the Five Hindrances – the energies that cause us to forget our intention to be present in a kind and compassionate way.\n•Cultivating the Seven Factors of Awakening – these wholesome qualities that help us remember and connect to the simple joys of non-clinging.\n•This summer\, we will explore the practice of cultivating lovingkindness and the other “divine abodes” of compassion\, joy\, and equanimity.\n•In the fall\, we will look more closely at what the Buddha called the “Three Characteristics” of all experience – Dukkha (variously translated as unsatisfactoriness\, suffering\, or vulnerability)\, Impermanence\, and the not-self characteristic. \nHere is an opportunity to develop connections with other practitioners as we explore together in a non-conceptual way various aspects of practice on and off the cushion. Think of this as a learning laboratory\, and what we are “studying” is our own hearts\, minds\, and bodies. \nModule 1: Obstacles to Practice – Exploring the Five Hindrances \nWhile we may come to meditation hoping to experience calmness of mind\, as we practice\, we find that we are visited by “guests” such as desire\, ill will\, restlessness and worry\, sleepiness\, and doubt. \nThese are the energies of the “Five Hindrances”. They are like clouds that obscure the mind from seeing clearly. This course will offer an opportunity to explore how to practice with and understand these energies in our formal meditation practice as well as in our daily lives so that they can be skillfully abandoned. \nThere will be an opportunity for practice\, instruction\, and talks\, as well as group dialogue and inquiry. There will also be ongoing practice assignments each week to support the practical application of these teachings into your daily life. \nModule 1:\n \nAll Four Modules:\n \nModule 2:\n \nModule 3:\n \nModule 4:\n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Postponed: Developing the Five Spiritual Faculties
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: Developing the Five Spiritual Faculties \n \nwith Walt Opie\n \nThursday\, March 16th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, the program has been postponed.\n \n\n \nIn Buddhist teachings there are many lists\, including an important one known as the Five Spiritual Faculties\, which includes: faith (confidence)\, effort\, mindfulness\, concentration\, and wisdom (discernment). \nEach of these are inherent capacities we can cultivate and develop in our own practice\, and they all work together. Without the faith faculty\, we won’t take the risk to apply ourselves to the practice. Without putting in sincere effort\, we can’t really progress on the path. \nWithout mindfulness\, we won’t learn from our efforts because we won’t fully comprehend what’s really happening. Without concentration\, we won’t have the stability of mind required to see deeply into things. And without wisdom\, we won’t know how to apply what we’re learning along the way. \nJoin us for an evening discussion with visiting Insight Meditiation Teacher Walt Opie to explore how we can intergrate these important qualities in our own lives. Members of our Circle of Friends are eligible to receive 20% off of the Sustaining Rate via a code provided in the email confirming membership\, which you can enter after clicking the Sustaining Level registration. \n*Benefactor Level: Supports NYI’s ability to offer the Subsidized Base. \n**Sustaining Level: This level reflects the actual costs to support this program. Circle of Friends members eligible for 20% discount with code. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Living Life Through the Dharma\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \nLocation for In-Person: New York Zendo (Shobo-Ji) on 223 East 67th Street\, NYC\n \n\n \nThe teachings of the Dharma are teachings about life. When we truly take the Dharma in and take refuge in the Dharma\, our life changes—sometimes in obvious ways\, sometimes in ways we don’t even see. In formal practice\, we experience the dharma in one way\, but it is how we take it into our life—our work\, our relationships\, our illnesses etc—that is truly important. \nIf you are new to the Dharma\, this will be an ideal introduction\, and like any great teachings\, if you have been practicing for many years\, your relationship to the teachings will have changed as well. \nThis course will be In-Person and Online. \nFinding Balance in All That We Do\n \nThursdays\, March 23rd – April 20th\, 2023 from 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\n \nIn the book “In the Lap of the Buddha” Gavin Harrison wrote “In spiritual freedom\, we do not become free from events\, but we become free within events. Circumstances lose their power to lacerate our minds”. In these five weeks\, we will look closely at how the Buddha’s Noble Eightfold Path and other teachings from both the early and later teachings can bring us to place of ease and balance and equanimity. \nEach class will include some chanting\, meditation\, dharma talk and discuss. There will be weekly readings and practices. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nRegistration\nIf you are having trouble registering with the form below\, CLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nNYI’s Covid Protocol for In-Person Indoors Programs:\nWe continue to strongly encourage all Sangha members to take advantage of vaccination against Covid and influenza\, including booster shots.\nAll participants must register in advance before attending the program.\nWe ask that each Sangha member carefully and honestly assess their health prior to heading to class\, and ask that anyone who is even mildly symptomatic (including sore throat\, cough\, sinus/nasal congestion\, loss of smell\, fever\, or unexplained body ache or fatigue) stay home. Symptoms may precede a positive Covid test result by several days\, or may indicate influenza or other infections that will not be detected by standard testing.\nWhile we appreciate the hardship of missing an event that you may have made significant sacrifices to be able to attend\, this is the single most important precaution you can take to protect both yourself and your fellow Sangha members.\nAll participants are strongly encouraged to wear masks during these classes.\nDisclaimer:\nProcedures adhere to current CDC\, NY State\, NYC\, and New York Zendo Shobo-Ji guidelines.\nChanges may be applied at any time\, based on these third-party guidelines. \nAll in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \nFor the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell. \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels.
