SUMMARY:Postponed: Living With Appreciation - Four Week Course
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: Living With Appreciation – Four Week Course\n \nwith Bodhipaksa \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, this course is being postponed and will be rescheduled for a future date.\n \n\n \nA grateful and appreciative life is a happy life. \nOn this four-evening workshop series we’ll explore the art of seeking what’s wholesome in ourselves and others—even in those we dislike or even hate. \nThe traditional Buddhist term for recognizing and appreciating the skillful qualities and actions is mudita. This is one of the “four divine abidings” of the Buddhist tradition\, following on from kindness and compassion. Mudita is not simply “being happy because others are happy\,” but rejoicing in the skillful qualities that give rise to peace and joy in the world. It’s “joyful appreciation.” To have mudita is to be appreciative. \nLiving with appreciation has long been seen as one of the most important factors in creating happiness and well-being\, and modern psychology agrees. \nThrough talks\, reflection\, and meditation\, we’ll explore how to recognize the skillful even when we find that hard. We’ll see how we can overcome the cynical approach of always finding the flaws in others. We’ll look at how we can support and encourage the arising of skillful qualities in ourselves and others. And we’ll see how admiration leads to emulation. \nPerhaps most importantly\, we’ll experience the benefits of appreciating skillful qualities in ourselves and others\, and how it is the single most important way for us to bring joy and peace into our own lives and into the world. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. Members of our Circle of Friends are eligible to receive 20% off of the Sustaining Rate via a code provided in the email confirming membership\, which you can enter after clicking the Sustaining Level registration. \n*Benefactor Level: Supports NYI’s ability to offer the Subsidized Base. \n**Sustaining Level: This level reflects the actual costs to support this program. Circle of Friends members eligible for 20% discount with code. Click here to join. \n***Subsidized Base: Made possible by the generosity of Benefactor Level above and other donations to ensure participation by those requiring financial assistance.\n \nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. If your question is not addressed in the FAQs\, please email registration@nyimc.org. \nIf you are unable to pay the Subsidized Base Fee\, you can learn about volunteering to offer work exchange and letting us know how much you are able to pay for this program by emailing registration@nyimc.org. \nPlease note that New York Insight records online programs. The recorded content may be discoverable should a legal matter arise. \nBy registering\, I give New York Insight permission to use my text/video/audio for educational or other purposes for the duration of New York Insight activities going forward. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact registration@nyimc.org. \n

SUMMARY:Online: Actions Without an Actor
DESCRIPTION:Online: Actions Without an Actor\n \nwith Stephen Fulder\n \nSunday\, July 9th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n  \nThe nature and transparency of the self\, the ‘me’\, is an essential core element of the journey to wisdom and a liberated life. Yet it is often hard to relate to in practice\, and in life\, and we can be left with it as a mysterious Buddhist concept of Anatta or emptiness. \nIt can become much clearer if we explore how it feels to act in life with less dependence on an actor\, controller and subject. This also addresses important questions: how can we make choices\, how can we act effectively\, how can we engage with the community\, who is it that practices\, and how can we look after ourselves with less of a ‘doer’ in charge of things? \nIn this online event we will practice and invite insights into the self and beyond the self\, and explore its implications in relation to action in life\, by means of meditation\, exercises\, dharma talk and discussion. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: The Heart of the Matter - Cultivating Lovingkindness Practice
DESCRIPTION:The Heart of the Matter – Cultivating Lovingkindness Practice\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \nMondays\, July 10 – August 14th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \n\n \nThe human heart is naturally kind\, joyful\, and compassionate\, but we don’t feel this when our hearts are overwhelmed with fear and separation. In times like these\, it is more important than ever to learn how to open and restore our hearts through practices of lovingkindness\, compassion\, joy and equanimity. As Martin Luther King Jr. said\, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear.” \nIn this course we will explore the various facets of Lovingkindness practice. There will be ongoing home practices each week\, including questions for reflection. In every class there will be time to ask questions and share insights\, as well as time to be in breakout rooms sharing\, reflecting and learning from each other in smaller groups. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance.\n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Everyday Life is the Way of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:Online: Everyday Life is the Way of Awakening\n \nwith José Shinzan Palma\n \nThursday\, July 13th\, 2023 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET\n \n\n \nHow can we find awakening in our body\, relationships\, and everyday life? In this online program with José Shinzan Palma\, Zen priest and Dharma successor to Roshi Joan Halifax\, we’ll contemplate how we can get out of the duality of “my practice and the world outside” through an exploration of the body-mind as the entire world. \nWe’ll use a classic Zen text by the 13th century Zen master Dogen as a foundation to help us examine what our practicing and studying efforts are ultimately for: to wake up to ourselves and the entire world. SUMMARY:Online: Cultivating Faith\, Trust\, Confidence
DESCRIPTION:Online: Cultivating Faith\, Trust\, Confidence \nwith Melissa McKay \nNew Schedule: Tuesdays\, July 18th\, 25th\, & Aug. 1st\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n  \nSaddha is a Pali word often translated as faith\, trust\, or confidence and is one of the Buddha’s teachings on the 5 Spiritual Faculties\, along with mindfulness\, concentration\, energy\, and wisdom. \nThis wisdom\, beautifully elucidated in ‘The Questions of King Milinda\,’ an ancient Buddhist text that records the encounter between a Greek king and a Buddhist monk around 200 BC and reads like a modern dialogue between East and West\, presents faith as a transformative force\, one that infuses your heart with serene courage and propels it forward with conviction. SUMMARY:Online: You Are A Wonder Of Life
DESCRIPTION:Online: You Are A Wonder Of Life\n \nwith Cuong Lu\n \nThursday\, July 20th\, 2023 | 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET\n \n\n \nWe all want to be happy. And we think suffering is preventing us from being happy and that suffering and happiness cannot both be present at the same time. \nBut suffering is not the opposite of happiness or a problem to be solved. Suffering is a truth to be recognized. \nWhen we look deeply at the truths in our lives — without glossing over or denying them — we become present for what is\, including the meaning behind our suffering. \nThe first step in transforming suffering is to change our way of understanding it. \nJoin Buddhist teacher and scholar\, Cuong Lu for an online discussion exploring and learning about suffering. Once we understand it’s nature\, we have a chance to discover true happiness. SUMMARY:Online: Cultivating Qualities of Emotional Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Online: Cultivating Qualities of Emotional Resilience\n \nwith Paul Epstein\n \nSaturday\, July 22nd\, 2023 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nEmotional resilience refers to one’s ability to adapt to stressful situations or crises. We’ll discuss and learn traits of emotional resilience and enhance our coping skills. \nEvidence shows that mindfulness increases resilience. More resilient people are able to “roll with the punches” and adapt to adversity without lasting difficulties; less resilient people have a harder time with stress\, uncertainty and life changes\, \nThere is no cure for the human condition\, yet there is a healing journey and spiritual path that involves cultivating a mindful awareness and freedom to choose how to relate to life and how to respond. There are certain characteristics that resilient people tend to share that can be cultivated and enhanced. \nMindfulness and compassion provide a foundation for building resilience skills integrated with cultivating qualities and traits of resilience. We can prevent the long term negative impact of stress on our health through the cultivation of mindfulness and compassion. \nWe can move beyond surviving life’s challenges to actively participating in our own deep healing while building resilience for a brighter future\, transforming stress\, pain\, and illness into a journey of self healing and awakening.
