SUMMARY:Online: Insight 101 – A Six Week Meditation Beginner’s Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Insight 101 – A Six Week Meditation Beginner’s Course\n \nwith Lani Miller\n \nThursdays\, September 7th – October 12th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nThere are many types of meditation and many reasons why one might be drawn to it. Meditation can be a powerful way to reduce stress. It can also help us to understand and relate to challenging feelings in healthier ways. \nAlong with these possible benefits\, and perhaps most importantly\, meditation offers us the opportunity to learn to be fully present and open to whatever is happening in our own experience\, just as it is. Through this kind attention\, happiness and peace grow in our lives; we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves and bring this awareness into our relationships and the world we share. \nIf you’ve been wanting to learn how to meditate or refresh and renew the meditation practice you already have\, we invite you to join this six-week meditation course to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) meditation in a warm\, supportive environment. \nWe will emphasize experiential practice\, including instructions for sitting and walking meditation\, and explore how we can bring this practice of presence into our everyday lives. \nClasses will include time for practice\, talks\, guidance from the teacher\, and plenty of time for sharing and Q&A. There will be home practice assignments each week to support you in establishing and/or sustaining your practice. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new window for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. Members of our Circle of Friends are eligible to receive 20% off of the Sustaining Rate via a code provided in the email confirming membership\, which you can enter after clicking the Sustaining Level registration. \n*Benefactor Level: Supports NYI’s ability to offer the Subsidized Base. \n**Sustaining Level: This level reflects the actual costs to support this program. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Do I See My True Self? Do I See You? Do I See Nature? A Half-Day Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Do I see my true self? Do I see you? Do I see nature? – A Half-Day Retreat \nwith Wildecy de Fátima Jury \nSaturday\, September 16th\, 2023 | 1:00pm – 5:30pm ET \nIn Person Location: Balance Arts Center – Room 5\n \n\n \nThe practice of the dharma teaches us to see ourselves\, others and nature in very genuine ways. The Dharma inspires and guides us to embrace ourselves\, others and nature by savoring these relationships and bringing profound spiritual growth. \nThe teacher Dogan says: “To study the way of enlightenment is to study the self…” Dharma teacher Larry Yang says: “This practice is inherently relational.” Medicine Elder & Diviner Mbali Marais says: “When we return to our own nature\, we belong.” To practice the dharma is to hear\, feel\, see and be in harmony with self\, all human beings\, and nature. \n‘’Sawubona\,” meaning\, “I see you\,” is a South African Zulu greeting. This means that you are seen completely with respect and love by others – your vulnerabilities\, defilements\, and resilience – your beauty and your powerful presence is transparent and loving. \nDo you see yourself and others in very auspicious ways? As beings from and within a sacred mystery? \nIn this half day retreat\, inside of a safe and supportive container\, we will observe\, reflect\, and share how we are seeing and relating to ourselves and others. We will meditate\, chant\, write\, make art\, dialogue and move together. \nThis will be a contemplative retreat with lots of tenderness and deep soothing. It will be an opportunity to let go of the obstacles that cause suffering and separation from nature\, from self from others. \nFor those planning to attend the retreat in-person before registering\, please ask yourself if you are committed to staying the entire time. For those registering online – please consider if you’ll be able to have your video cameras on the entire time. \nThis is a retreat open to everyone who practices the dharma. SUMMARY:In Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \n\nIn-Person Course: Wednesdays\, September 20th – November 8th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 12:00pm ET\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, October 28th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \n \nLocation: Still Mind Zendo at 37 W 17th St # 6W NYC\n \n\n  \nCourse Description:\nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25 – 30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450\nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:Postponed: The Heart of Compassion - Looking Towards\, Finding Ease
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: The Heart of Compassion – Looking Towards\, Finding Ease \n \nwith Scott Tusa\n \nThursday\, September 21st\, 2023 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\n \nDue to unforeseen change in circumstances\, the course is postponed\n \nLocation: Balance Arts Center – Room 5\, 151 W 30th St 3rd fl. \n \n\n \n“If your everyday practice is to open to all your emotions\, to all the people your meet\, to all the situations your encounter without closing down\, trusting that you can do that – then that will take you as far as you can go. And then you’ll understand all the teachings that anyone has ever taught.” – Pema Chodron \n“Life is not a problem to be solved\, but a reality to be experienced.” – Soren Kierkegaard\, THE HEART OF COMPASSION \nLife doesn’t always go the way we want. Rather than bypassing it’s challenges when they come up\, meditation offers us an opportunity to look towards in order to find true contentment. \nContentment does not come from ignoring suffering\, but rather happens when we are able to meet and be curious about our fuller human experience. Eventually the kindness and space we can provide towards our own suffering becomes the kindness and compassion we can express towards others. \nIn this in person evening talk\, and through periods of meditation\, experiential learning\, and discussion\, we will explore how to meet life’s challenges with more awareness\, compassion\, and ease. \nTogether\, we’ll learn how to:\n-Access a more grounded and open meditative awareness practice\n-Connect with a more embodied and compassionate way of being in your daily life\n-Integrate core Buddhist teachings into direct experience \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur - A Day of Silence and Reflection
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Yom Kippur – A Day of Silence and Reflection\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz and Jon Aaron\n \nMonday\, September 25th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 7:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: Balance Arts Center at 151 W 30th St 3rd floor\, New York City\n \n\n \nYom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement\, a day when\, as a community\, Jews are asked to reflect on their actions of the past year and to ask for atonement for any actions that were unskillful. In support of this day\, for the past 19 years\, NYI has hosted a day of silence and reflection. \nTo join us online\, please use this Zoom link:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83545751797?pwd=Ti9qM3FxZyszNjRoQkN3TzJTVjdCQT09\nMeeting ID: 835 4575 1797\nPasscode: 442272\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kd6aM8SGwh \nThis year New York Insight will continue the annual Yom Kippur tradition. As we begin to emerge into a different phase of the pandemic\, we are happy to offer a hybrid event. All are welcome to participate\, however\, there are only limited spaces for those who wish to participate in person\, so pre-registration is absolutely necessary. In addition\, while we acknowledge the culture of “shul hopping” – coming for a part of the day and moving on\, we ask that you register only for the part(s) of the day that you are committed to attend\, so that as many as possible can be accommodated. \nAs always\, there will be meditations focused on the idea of right action\, the difference between guilt and remorse\, the laws of karma\, forgiveness\, and lovingkindness. There will also be an opportunity for mindful discussion on the Buddhist perspective on atonement. This year\, especially\, in the context of moving out of isolation into an in person event\, we will be emphasizing the jewel of Sangha – community. \nAll are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast. \nThis daylong retreat is a dana (donation) based event\, with donations being divided between New York Insight and Buddhist Global Relief. Guided by Buddhist teachings\, Buddhist Global Relief strives to relieve chronic hunger and malnutrition worldwide. DESCRIPTION:Online: Lessons in Lovingkindness – Practical Advice from 40 Years of Practice\n \nwith Bodhipaksa\n \nSaturday\, September 30th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nI first learned lovingkindness (metta) practice in the summer of 1983. Looking back\, the initial guidance I received seems very basic\, and I’ve learned a lot in the 40 years since then. \nIn this half-day workshop I’ll be sharing — in a very practical way — some of the things I’m most glad I’ve learned so I can help you grow and deepen your metta practice. In particular I’ll be sharing: \n-Why I now call metta “kindness” instead of “lovingkindness.”\n-The importance of “kind eyes” in tapping into a natural attitude of kindness.\n-How to anchor your practice in empathy\, which is all too often the “missing link” in metta practice.\n-What the difference is between being nice and being kind.\n-The power of using natural language in order to create a more authentic and heart-felt communication with yourself.\n-The crucial role of self-kindness and self-compassion\, and how they set up the conditions for kindness and compassion for others. \nI do hope you’re able to join me for this workshop\, which takes place on Zoom. I’m certain your lovingkindness practice will never be the same again. \n-Bodhipaksa \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels.
