SUMMARY:Postponed: The Social Action of Kind Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: The Social Action of Kind Awareness\n \nwith Jill Satterfield\n \nTuesdays\, October 3rd – 24th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \nDUE TO UNFORESEEN CHANGE IN CIRCUMSTANCES\, THE COURSE IS POSTPONED.\n \n\n \nIt can be difficult to know where to start in terms of taking some form of social\, compassionate action in our troubled world. Fortunately\, developing any bit of kind and compassionate awareness organically leads to daily actions both small and of grander scale. \nNo ripple effect is locally contained. What affects one\, affects all – eventually. Beginning by embodying kind awareness ourselves begins a paradigm shift that really never ends. \nThis series will explore a variety of practices and teachings that will facilitate the direct experiences and benefits of living with kind awareness for ourselves\, our community and the world around us. \n \nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. If your question is not addressed in the FAQs\, please email registration@nyimc.org. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact registration@nyimc.org. \n

SUMMARY:Online: Healing the Child Within - Integrating the Healing Journey and Spiritual Path
DESCRIPTION:Online: Healing the Child Within – Integrating the Healing Journey and Spiritual Path\n \nwith Paul Epstein\n \nSaturday\, October 14th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \n“In each of us\, there is a young\, suffering child. We have all had times of difficulty as children……The cry we hear from deep in our hearts comes from the wounded child within. …. just as the suffering is present in every cell of our body\, so are the seeds of awakened understanding and happiness.”\n-from Reconciliation: Healing The Inner Child\, by Thich Nhat Hanh (2010) \nThrough mindfulness and (self) compassion practice and teachings\, we can begin to transform our pain and suffering into an integrated journey of both self healing and awakening. We’ll live and explore with a compassionate inquiry the question: How can we be with our wounds living in our body\, mind\, heart and spirit with an awareness that is merciful\, wise\, compassionate and trauma sensitive? \nRadical acceptance\, courage and unconditional presence can guide us home to our true self\, our authentic being\, our Buddha nature. We can realize the liberating experience of facing and unburdening painful truth and that in the heart of the pain is the healing\, and in the suffering is the end of suffering and awakening. \nJack Kornfield in his article “Even the Best Meditators Have Old Wounds to Heal” cautions that “meditation practice doesn’t ‘do it all’…Meditation and spiritual practice can easily be used to suppress and avoid feeling or to escape from difficult areas of our lives.” Mindfulness works only when we are willing to direct attention to every area of our suffering. \n“Perhaps all the dragons in our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us act\, just once\, with beauty and courage. Perhaps everything that frightens us is\, in its deepest essence\, something helpless that wants our love.”― Rainer Maria Rilke \nJoin Dr Paul Epstein for this half-day retreat to explore this healing power of mindfulness. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance.\n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. The process of walking–outer pilgrimage—often gives rise to insights\, healing\, and a deep sense of letting go—inner pilgrimage. \nDoing this together builds community and mutual belonging. \nDoing this in a major American city brings the sacred into the everyday. \nIn this 13.5 mile pilgrimage visiting Insight meditation teacher nico hase will guide participants in a meditation walk from the southern tip of Manhattan to the northern tip. The pilgrimage will happen rain or shine. \nThe group will gather at 9:45 at the Statue of Liberty View Point in Battery Park. After a guided meditation\, dialogue\, and intention setting ritual\, the group will walk in silence until lunch. \nDuring lunch there will be time for casual conversation\, followed by a brief meditation\, before resuming the silent meditation walk. The pilgrimage will end at Inwood Hill Park\, where there will be time for reflections\, dialogue\, and a brief closing ceremony. \n(See below for a map of our route.) \nThis pilgrimage is open to anyone who can walk thirteen and a half miles at a brisk pace with infrequent stops. SUMMARY:Online: Investigating the Three Characteristics of Existence
DESCRIPTION:Online: Investigating the Three Characteristics of Existence \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, October 16th – November 13th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \n\n  \nThe Buddha’s teaching of anatta (not self) is too often misunderstood. In exploring the characteristic of not self\, we begin by exploring our views of the self. The Buddha never said there is no self. However nothing we typically relate to as self (body\, thoughts\, memories\, views\, emotions\, relationships\, possessions\, etc.) can be relied upon to last and to continue to satisfy. We will investigate the various levels of selfing and its relationship to clinging. \nWe’ve all experienced impermanence (anicca) first hand in our lives\, and would not intellectually challenge that things change. However deeply practicing and investigating anicca has implications for how we choose to live our lives \nThe Buddha said “I teach one thing and one thing only\, Dukkha and the end of Dukkha.” Through laying the groundwork through investigation of Anatta and Anicca\, we are ready to explore the three kinds of Dukkha. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Deep Rest as Wise Effort
DESCRIPTION:Online: Deep Rest as Wise Effort\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo\n \nThursday\, October 19th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \n“We must believe we are worthy of rest. We don’t have to earn it. It is our birthright. It is one of our most ancient and primal needs.”\n― Tricia Hersey\, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto \nIn this evening of practice\, we are invited to return home to our body and mind to discover the wisdom and clarity that can emerge from profound rest. With so many aspects of our lives impacted and disrupted by systems that insist that we be ‘on’ all the time\, we’ll instead create a refuge to nurture and support our nervous systems\, and practice ways to deeply rest together and in our daily lives. \nWise Effort\, one of the aspects of the Buddha’s Eightfold Path\, includes not just how we choose to engage with the practice and the world around us\, but also how we choose to let go and release tension; soften; give ourselves\, each other\, and our planet a break and a chance to rest\, which is the only way we can heal. Wise Effort can also be understood as stepping out of the patterns that govern our world to build coalitions that can offer ourselves and others true refuge and deep rest. \nJoin us for this evening which will include a talk\, meditation\, experiential practices and space for reflection and conversation in community. SUMMARY:Postponed: Finding Refuge In Daily Life - The Gifts of the Three Jewels
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: Finding Refuge In Daily Life – The Gifts of the Three Jewels\n \nwith Lani Miller\n \nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, the program has been postponed.\n \n\n \nWhat is a refuge for you? What in your daily life offers you deep peace and comfort? Where do you find a welcoming and unconditional container for whatever is truly happening in your body\, heart\, and mind? \nOne of the most beautiful and inspiring parts of the Buddhist path is the Teaching of the Three Refuges\, also known as The Three Jewels. \nThey are 1) Taking Refuge in The Buddha\, the possibility of freedom and awakening in this very life; 2) Taking Refuge in The Dharma\, the Buddha’s teachings and the truth of the way things are; and 3) Taking Refuge In The Sangha\, the sacred community of like-minded friends and seekers. \nIn these times of great change and uncertainty\, knowing that refuge is possible and that direct access to it can be found through connection with our own body\, heart\, and mind is reassuring. \nWe can explore what offers us this comfort and inspiration – spaces and places we can relax into and trust that something “bigger than us” that can hold us on our journey through life. \nIn this four-week course\, we will explore the powerful and transformative teachings of The Three Jewels and how we can make them accessible and applicable in our daily lives. \nThe course will include time to meditate\, teacher talks and support\, and time for participant connection and sharing. \nThere will also be an opportunity to take refuge in The Three Jewels\, if it’s something you choose to do. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact registration@nyimc.org. \n
