SUMMARY:Online: Finding Contentment in the Midst of Life's Challenges
DESCRIPTION:Online: Finding Contentment in the Midst of Life’s Challenges\n \nwith Scott Tusa\n \nTuesday\, December 5th\, 2023 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm ET\n \n\n \n“If your everyday practice is to open to all your emotions\, to all the people your meet\, to all the situations your encounter without closing down\, trusting that you can do that – then that will take you as far as you can go. And then you’ll understand all the teachings that anyone has ever taught.” – Pema Chodron \n“Life is not a problem to be solved\, but a reality to be experienced.” – Soren Kierkegaard\, The Heart of Compassion \nLife doesn’t always go the way we want. Rather than bypassing its challenges when they come up\, meditation offers us an opportunity to look towards in order to find true contentment. \nContentment does not come from ignoring suffering\, but rather happens when we are able to meet and be curious about our fuller human experience. Eventually the kindness and space we can provide towards our own suffering becomes the kindness and compassion we can express towards others. \nIn this online evening talk\, and through periods of meditation\, experiential learning\, and discussion\, we will explore how to meet life’s challenges with more awareness\, compassion\, and ease. \nYou’ll learn how to:\n-Access a more grounded and open meditative awareness practice\n-Connect with a more embodied and compassionate way of being in your daily life\n-Integrate core Buddhist teachings into direct experience \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Living With Appreciation - A Three Week Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Living With Appreciation – A Three Week Course\n \nwith Bodhipaksa\n \nRevised Dates: Tuesdays\, December 5th – 19th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n \nA grateful and appreciative life is a happy life. \nOn this three-evening workshop series we’ll explore the art of seeking what’s wholesome in ourselves and others—even in those we dislike or even hate. \nThe traditional Buddhist term for recognizing and appreciating the skillful qualities and actions is mudita. This is one of the “four divine abidings” of the Buddhist tradition\, following on from kindness and compassion. Mudita is not simply “being happy because others are happy\,” but rejoicing in the skillful qualities that give rise to peace and joy in the world. It’s “joyful appreciation.” To have mudita is to be appreciative. \nLiving with appreciation has long been seen as one of the most important factors in creating happiness and well-being\, and modern psychology agrees. \nThrough talks\, reflection\, and meditation\, we’ll explore how to recognize the skillful even when we find that hard. We’ll see how we can overcome the cynical approach of always finding the flaws in others. We’ll look at how we can support and encourage the arising of skillful qualities in ourselves and others. And we’ll see how admiration leads to emulation. \nPerhaps most importantly\, we’ll experience the benefits of appreciating skillful qualities in ourselves and others\, and how it is the single most important way for us to bring joy and peace into our own lives and into the world. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That - A Daylong Retreat for Radical Self Care
DESCRIPTION:Online: Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That – A Daylong Retreat for Radical Self Care\n \nwith Gina LaRoche\n \nSaturday\, December 9th\, 2023 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET\n \n\n \n“If one knew oneself to be precious\,\nOne would guard oneself with care.” \nThis opening to chapter 12 in Gil Fronsdale’s translation of the Dhammapada has been a valuable source of support and guidance for practice. \nOn this retreat\, we will explore what it means to guard oneself with care during great uncertainty and tumult. We will find ways to nourish and sustain ourselves through moment-to-moment awareness\, all while letting go of the context and structure of time while experimenting with the retreat form. \nGina’s teaching style is to allow the context of the moment to determine the structure and outline of our time together. Our practice will incorporate mindfulness of body and breath (the first and second foundations of mindfulness) and open awareness. \nFormal kindness\, compassion\, and equanimity practice (Brahma Viharas) will also be woven throughout the day. The intention for this time is to carry what is learned from our formal practice into our day-to-day experience. \nDepending on the yogis attending\, a BIPOC-only practice time may be included. SUMMARY:Online: The Dharma of Craving - Abandoning Attachment\, Opening to Connection
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Dharma of Craving – Abandoning Attachment\, Opening to Connection \n \nwith Walt Opie\n \nThursday\, December 14th\, 2023 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \n“As a result of desire\, we may also lose connection to others.”\n– Sharon Salzberg\, Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness \nThe Buddha had much to say about how craving causes suffering\, comparing it to a spider caught in its own web. \nWhen we get caught up in various forms of craving\, desire\, and attachment\, we are often blocked from deeper connection with ourselves and others in our lives. It can be as if we are living with blinders on. \nBut even if we happen to get what we desire\, our satisfaction is usually fleeting and short-lived\, which can leave us feeling lonely\, isolated\, and alone. \nWhat is the solution? Join Insight meditation teacher Walt Opie for an evening exploring how we get caught by craving\, how it blocks us from meaningful connection\, and how we can effectively move through it. \nTogether we will discuss and engage in experiential practices to cultivate generosity and gratitude\, establish moment-to-moment mindful awareness\, and learn how to simplify our lives through wise renunciation.
