SUMMARY:Online: The Wheel of Climate Emotions
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Wheel of Climate Emotions \n \nwith Anya Kamenetz and Jay Michaelson\n \nTuesday\, May 7th\, 2024 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n \nAcross more than a dozen global studies\, people report a wide range of emotional reactions (not all of which are negative) to the climate crisis\, including fear\, rage\, hope\, anxiety\, grief\, interest\, and frustration. Many of these aren’t necessarily pleasant\, but they are energizing\, and they can lead you to take a brave moral stand on climate change. How do we cope with this ever-turning wheel of emotions so that they inspire rather than defeat us? \nIn this celebration of Earth Day\, we invite you to join award-winning author and advocate Anya Kamenetz\, one of the country’s leading experts on climate change and mental health\, and New York Insight core team member and longtime climate journalist Jay Michaelson\, to explore the wheel of climate emotions (based on the pioneering work of Panu Pihkala) and how we as Buddhists\, meditators\, and engaged citizens can work with it skillfully. In conversation and in meditation\, we’ll explore noticing and accommodating our emotions\, building resilience\, and working with the energies of these emotions in the body. Perhaps most of all\, we’ll join together to build community — to know that we’re not alone. In fact\, whatever you’re feeling or noticing is a sign of your aliveness\, receptivity\, and connection to all life. It’s what brings us together. \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:In-Person: Self-Compassion 101
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Self-Compassion 101\n \nwith Gary Singer\n \nWednesdays\, May 15th – June 26th\, 2024 | 12:00pm – 1:30pm\nPlease Note: This course will skip June 19th\, 2024\n \nLocation: Still Mind Zendo at 34 W. 15th Street\, 3rd floor \n  \nCompassion is a cornerstone of the Buddha’s teachings. So then why do many of us have an easier time extending compassion to others than to ourselves? \nIn this course\, we’ll use mindfulness to investigate how we treat ourselves in the privacy of our own minds. Why does our Inner Critic tend to treat ourselves worse than we would anyone else? What stories might we be telling about ourselves and others that might simply be untrue? Can we stop the incessant comparison to others? Can we finally befriend ourselves? \nWith Self Compassion 101\, we become aware of difficult emotions\, recognize the common humanity in our struggles\, and accept ourselves with greater kindness and compassion. And the more we’re at peace with ourselves\, the more peaceful we are with others and the world. \nThis in-person course is open to new and experienced meditators. Between classes\, participants will be encouraged to engaged in meditation and other practices for 20 minutes each day\, between classes. \nBring your curiosity! \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! Early Bird pricing ends three weeks before the event. SUMMARY:In-Person: Urban Farm Ecodharma - Cultivating Local and Personal Resilience in a Time of Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Urban Farm Ecodharma – Cultivating Local and Personal Resilience in a Time of Climate Crisis\n \nwith Lin Wang Gordon\n \nSaturday\, May 18th\, June 22nd\, July 20th\, August 10th\, September 21st\, October 19th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 4:00pm\n \nLocation: The Battery Park Urban Farm\n \n“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal\, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth\, the earth heals us.” \n― Robin Wall Kimmerer\, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom\, Scientific Knowledge\, and the Teachings of Plants \n  \nThe purpose of this course is to nurture climate resilience through learning about meditation practices and Buddhist philosophy\, and to cultivate wisdom by directly working with the Earth through volunteering at an urban farm. \nAs the climate crisis intensifies\, life as we’ve come to know it\, is in the midst of massive change and upheaval. While facing impermanence has always been part of the Buddhist teachings\, how do we hold this with the particular intensity of climate change? How do we face our anxiety\, fear\, anger\, grief\, guilt\, and overwhelm with compassion and wisdom\, and cultivate a sense of resilience? What are our individual and collective responses? Where do we fit into what Joanna Macy has called The Great Turning? \nOver the 6 months of this course\, we will discover how our embodied Buddhist practices can help us face difficult emotions with compassion and how that impacts our response to the crisis. We will explore healing and cultivating compassion\, wisdom\, resilience\, equanimity through our meditation practices. Embracing the climate crisis is as much a spiritual\, sacred path as healing from our personal crisis. We will explore diverse voices who have been thinking through the responses – a diversity that includes gender\, race\, and age – to provide a wide range of perspectives. We will also engage in nature-based meditation practices – integrating wisdom from our natural environment into our practices and understanding. \nJust as important as embodied practices\, we will reconnect to the Earth directly through our hands-on volunteering at an urban farm. We will partner with The Battery Park Urban Farm and volunteer from the planting season through harvest time (May to October) during our monthly daylong classes. The Battery Park Urban Farm provides education to 5\,000 students each year\, and the produce grown is either used during educational programs or donated to hunger relief organizations in NYC such as Coalition for the Homeless. We will get to know the seasons and elements through connections with soil\, water\, plants and to learn about regenerative practices. The urban farm and perennial garden staff will cover topics such as composting\, crop planning\, seed saving\, weeds and pest management\, and perennial plants. To create a mutually supportive program\, while we will be getting rich experiential learning and education from the staff\, we are there to provide public service and volunteering to assist the staff with what they need throughout the season. Through direct experiential learning\, we will cultivate an intimate connection with the Earth\, and understand the intricate web of ecosystems. \nThe course will include six daylong-retreats\, ongoing small groups and regular readings. This is an in-person course\, with the intention to build and nurture community throughout the course. \nThe 6 course dates are:\nSat. 5/18\nSat. 6/22\nSat. 7/20\nSat. 8/10\nSat. 9/21\nSat. 10/19\nThe daylong will be from 10am-4pm for each class. The structure of the day will likely be the following but subject to change depending on the actual conditions of the urban farm. \n10am – 12pm – Group meet and volunteering\n12pm – 1pm – Group lunch and community building\n1pm -4pm – Nature meditation and ecodharma practices \nWe welcome participants with all levels of physical abilities\, however\, please know that most of the volunteering roles will require working on the soil\, watering\, weeding\, and so forth. There would be only a couple of roles that may be designed for physical limitations. \nPlease note: We have a limited number of scholarships available for this course. Please email volunteers@nyimc.org for more info. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! Early Bird pricing ends three weeks before the event. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.)\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \n
