SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Tushar D. Bhagat \n\nIn-Person Course: Thursdays\, June 6th – August 1st\, 2024 | 10:00am – 12:30pm ET\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, July 13th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \nPlease note this will not meet on the Thursday\, July 4th\, 2024 due to the national holiday. \n115 West 29th Street\, on the 12th Floor in New York City \nCourse Description: \nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect: \nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25 – 30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR: \nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. DESCRIPTION:Online: What is a Teacher For?\n \nwith nico hase\n \nThursday\, June 6th\, 2024 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n \nMost Buddhist traditions consider the teacher-student relationship central to the path of awakening. Yet different traditions understand the teacher-student relationship in different ways\, all of which have come under scrutiny of late. In this program\, we will explore how different traditions emphasize the roles of instruction\, commitment\, and devotion in the teacher-student relationship\, and we’ll explore issues of help and harm as they arise in the contemporary context. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person or Online: Insight 101 - Six Week Beginner’s Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person or Online: Insight 101 – Six Week Beginner’s Course\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \nTuesdays\, June 11th – July 23rd\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nPlease note that this course will not meet on Tuesday\, July 9th\, 2024\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th floor\n \n\n \nThere are many types of meditation and many reasons why one might be drawn to it. Meditation can be a powerful way to reduce stress. It can also help us to understand and relate to challenging feelings in healthier ways. \nAlong with these possible benefits\, and perhaps most importantly\, meditation offers us the opportunity to learn to be fully present and open to whatever is happening in our own experience\, just as it is. Through this kind attention\, happiness and peace grow in our lives; we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves and bring this awareness into our relationships and the world we share. \nIf you’ve been wanting to learn how to meditate or refresh and renew the meditation practice you already have\, we invite you to join this six-week meditation course to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) meditation in a warm\, supportive environment. \nWe will emphasize experiential practice\, including instructions for sitting and walking meditation\, and explore how we can bring this practice of presence into our everyday lives. \nClasses will include time for practice\, talks\, guidance from the teacher\, and plenty of time for sharing and Q&A. There will be home practice assignments each week to support you in establishing and/or sustaining your practice. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! Early Bird pricing ends three weeks before the event. SUMMARY:Online: The Thinking that Stills Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Thinking that Stills Thinking\n \nwith Bodhipaksa\n \nSaturday\, June 29th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nOur deepest meditations are often guided ones. It helps to have someone on hand to interrupt our mind-wandering and to bring us back gently\, over and over\, into the present moment. A skilled guide can also introduce us to new skills or remind us to tap into skills we know but have forgotten to employ. \nIn recent years I’ve encouraged my meditation students to use self-talk to lead themselves toward calmness\, clarity\, and love—to learn to be their own source of guidance. That’s what we’ll be exploring on this half-day workshop. \nAs meditation practitioners we’ll learn to be both teacher and student simultaneously. We’ll learn how to be a wise and kind spiritual friend to ourselves — so that we’re present\, responsive\, kind\, and helpful toward ourselves as we go through the process of settling more deeply into our own experience. \nAnd we’ll learn to be receptive to what’s most wholesome within us\, allowing it in\, trusting it\, and allowing ourselves to be guided by our own inner wisdom. \nNote: Although this is not a teacher-training course\, it will be very helpful for anyone who finds themselves leading others in meditation. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! Early Bird pricing ends three weeks before the event. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.
