SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Margrit Pittman-Polletta\n \n\nFree Online MBSR Orientation: Thursday\, September 5th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, September 10th – October 29th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, October 19th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 4:00pm\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor\n \n\n \nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates \nFree Online MBSR Orientation: Thursday\, September 5th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, September 10th – October 29th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, October 19th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 4:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $350 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Dharma of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Dharma of James Baldwin and Audre Lorde\n \nwith Dr. Rima Vesely-Flad\n \nFriday\, September 6th\, 2024 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\nSaturday\, September 7th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 3:00pm ET\n \n\n \nJoin us for this special two-part retreat as we explore Black\, queer writers James Baldwin and Audre Lorde as ancestors who offered an embodied dharma of resilience\, fortitude\, presence\, and joy in a racist\, patriarchal\, and homophobic society. \nThough raised in the Christian tradition\, the essays\, fiction\, poetry\, and interviews by these two luminary thinkers offer fresh insights into classical Buddhist teachings\, particularly within the context of the United States. \nWe will discuss the Buddhist concept of suffering and practice the importance of honoring anger\, deconstructing the delusion of white supremacy\, and the necessity of attending to race\, gender\, and sexuality in Buddhist contexts. \nThe retreat will conclude with a dialogue on how Baldwin\, Lorde\, and the Buddhist tradition each understand power in liberatory ways. \nWe hope you can join us! \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Insight 101 - Intro to Vipassana Meditation
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Insight 101 – Intro to Vipassana Meditation\n \nwith Lani Miller\n \nThursdays\, September 12th – October 24th\, 2024 | 6:30 – 8:30pm ET\n \nPlease Note: This course will not meet on October 3rd\, 2024\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n \nThere are many types of meditation and many reasons why one might be drawn to it. Meditation can be a powerful way to reduce stress. It can also help us to understand and relate to challenging feelings in healthier ways. \nAlong with these possible benefits\, and perhaps most importantly\, meditation offers us the opportunity to learn to be fully present and open to whatever is happening in our own experience\, just as it is. Through this kind attention\, happiness and peace grow in our lives; we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves and bring this awareness into our relationships and the world we share. \nIf you’ve been wanting to learn how to meditate or refresh and renew the meditation practice you already have\, we invite you to join this six-week meditation course to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) meditation in a warm\, supportive environment. \nWe will emphasize experiential practice\, including instructions for sitting and walking meditation\, and explore how we can bring this practice of presence into our everyday lives. \nClasses will include time for practice\, talks\, guidance from the teacher\, and plenty of time for sharing and Q&A. Each week suggestions and supports will be offered for exploring and sustaining your practice in between classes. \n \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Effortless Mindfulness - Awakening Glimpse by Glimpse
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Effortless Mindfulness – Awakening Glimpse by Glimpse\n \nwith Loch Kelly\n \nFriday\, September 20th\, 2024 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th floor\n \n\n \nHaving experienced some of the initial benefits of mindfulness\, is it now possible to awaken to the deep sense of well-being\, creativity\, and unconditional love that is our true nature? During this two-hour evening event\, you will learn contemporary versions of effortless mindfulness that help you live from your heart-mind. \nEffortless Mindfulness comes from the Sutra Mahamudra tradition\, which began in North India and links the three main traditions of Buddhism: Theravada\, Mahayana\, and Vajrayana. This is primarily a movement of lay practitioners who developed a style of practice to support each other’s awakening in the midst of everyday life. Effortless mindfulness is ideal for our contemporary times in that it makes awakening possible for all of us\, without having to join a monastery or be an Olympic athlete of meditation. Awakening can become the next\, natural stage of our human development. \nLoch will draw from Buddhist traditions\, psychology\, and current neuroscience research to point us beyond our small\, separate sense of self to our already awake nature. \nThe main approach that will be explored is called “small glimpses\, many times.” It is a series of micro-meditations\, shifts of awareness and nondual pointers that help us move out of our chattering mind and into awake consciousness. From here\, we discover that ignorance and confusion begin to liberate and all experiences and emotions are welcome. This leads to natural compassion as our primary motivation for life. \nIn-Person Registration\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. SUMMARY:Online: When Love Fails
DESCRIPTION:Online: When Love Fails\n \nwith Bodhipaksa\n \nSaturday\, September 28th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nWe all have problems with anger\, resentment\, and even hatred and contempt. Some of those emotions may have even become more entrenched in us during this election season. The usual Buddhist prescription for addressing these various forms of ill will is to do lovingkindness\, or metta\, meditation. But you’re probably already doing that! We can find that even years of diligent practice still leave us with a residue of negativity that stubbornly refuses to shift. \nFortunately\, the Buddhist tradition offers us reflections and meditation practices designed to outwit and uproot our aversive tendencies. These are practices to which we can turn when our capacity for kindness reaches its limits. They involve looking more deeply into how our minds work\, and at what it is to be human. \nJoin meditation teacher Bodhipaksa for a half-day workshop about learning how we can find our way back to a loving state when it seems that love has failed. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity!
