This year\, we are pleased to continue the annual Yom Kippur tradition with a hybrid (in-person and online). All are welcome to participate. While we acknowledge the tradition of “shul hopping” (attending different services throughout the day)\, we kindly ask that you register for this event\, regardless of the time you plan to stay. \nThe day will include meditations focused on right action\, the difference between guilt and remorse\, the laws of karma\, forgiveness\, and lovingkindness. There will also be opportunities for mindful discussion on various aspects of the Buddhist perspective on atonement. \nAll are welcome to join us in this exploration\, which will conclude with a symbolic break-fast. \nThis daylong retreat is offered on a dana (donation) basis. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Practicing in the Midst of Conflict
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Practicing in the Midst of Conflict\n \nwith Stephen Fulder\n \nSunday\, October 13th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n \nThese are times of uncertainty. It is easy to respond to the many conflicts around the world with anger\, confusion\, despair\, or to even switch off our emotions. We may also be experiencing conflict and divisiveness closer to home\, and we can often feel exhausted from what feels like an endless struggle. \nDuring this 3-hour mini-retreat\, we will explore how to face these challenges with steadiness\, from a more universal and less personal point of view. We will practice meditation that helps us to remember our big soul\, and listen to our wise\, kind\, and liberating inner voices. \nParticular emphasis will be given to dharma practice and meditation needed to develop deep inner resources such as trust and equanimity. SUMMARY:Sold Out: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:Sold Out: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \n\nIn-Person Course: Wednesdays\, October 16th – December 11th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Sunday\, November 17th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm\n \nPlease Note: No class on November 27th due to the Thanksgiving holiday\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor\n \nIf you attended the October 9th MBSR orientation and would like to register for the full MBSR course\, please contact registration@nyimc.org directly. \nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates \nIf you attended the October 9th MBSR orientation and would like to register for the full MBSR course\, please contact registration@nyimc.org directly. \nIn-Person Course Wednesdays\, October 16th – December 11th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong Sunday\, November 17th\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $625 – Base $350 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:In-Person: Manhattan Pilgrimage - A Meditative Walk through NYC
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Manhattan Pilgrimage – A Meditative Walk through NYC\n \nwith nico hase\n \nSaturday\, October 19th\, 2024 | 9:45am – 5:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Destination: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n \nPilgrimage has been an essential part of Buddhist spiritual life for thousands of years. The process of walking (outer pilgrimage) often gives rise to insights\, healing\, and a deep sense of letting go (inner pilgrimage). \nDoing this together builds community and mutual belonging. Doing this in a major American city brings the sacred into the everyday. \nIn this 10 mile pilgrimage visiting Insight meditation teacher nico hase will guide participants in a meditation walk from the northern tip of Manhattan to our home center at New York Insight. The pilgrimage will happen rain or shine. \nThe group will gather at 9:45 at the Inwood Hill parking lot. After a guided meditation\, dialogue\, and intention setting ritual\, the group will walk in silence until lunch. \nDuring lunch there will be time for casual conversation\, followed by a brief meditation\, before resuming the silent meditation walk. The pilgrimage will end at 115 W 29th Street\, where nico will offer a dharma talk followed by reflections\, dialogue\, and a brief closing ceremony. \n(See below for a map of our route.) \nThis pilgrimage is open to anyone who can walk ten miles at a brisk pace with infrequent stops. No prior meditation experience is necessary. \nJoin visiting Insight meditation teacher nico hase for a day of outer and inner pilgrimage\, and a deepening into the sacred in the everyday of city life.\n \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: The Blessings and Burdens of Aging - A Three-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Blessings and Burdens of Aging – A Three-Week Course\n \nwith Amy Selzer & Nancy Glimm\n \nSundays\, October 20th\, 27th & November 3rd\, 2024 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nIn this three-part series\, teachers Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm offer a community where you can feel safe to speak from your heart about aging\, your fears\, and what it means to age. \nSince we are all aging\, this class is open to everyone. \nSometimes as we age\, there can be a sense of growing contentment. Unexpected opportunities to become more ourselves might even arise. Yet the other side of growing older—the changes in our body\, our intellect\, our looks\, energy\, and vitality—can be difficult to embrace with an open heart. \nThis course is a space to share the things that are coming up for us—both what we appreciate and what we don’t—and cultivate the inner resources that can help with dealing with the challenges of confronting our impermanence. \nWe will look at our relationship to change and how change can include the cultivation of the heart and mind. Change is challenging for all of us. Often the aging population feels invisible. We will use these ideas as lessons in humility by putting our attention on being with things as they are. We will illuminate the wisdom that was not available to us when we were younger. The Buddhist teachings on the Brahma Viharas\, the heart qualities\, will support our inquiry into the challenges we face as we age. \nWe are creating a sangha of support\, safety\, and openness\, where we can all open to the “blessings and burdens” that aging brings. \nThe intention for this class is to offer participants ways to feel empowered in facing the difficulties that aging brings\, and to question some of the negative narratives we may be holding onto. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Tushar D. Bhagat\n \n\nOnline Course: Mondays\, October 21st – December 9th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET\nOnline Daylong: Saturday\, November 23rd\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET\n \n\n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 41 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates \nOnline Course: Mondays\, October 21st – December 9th\, 2024 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET\nOnline Daylong: Saturday\, November 23rd\, 2024 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. SUMMARY:Online: Getting Well in an Unwell World - Walking the Buddha’s Path of Meditation and Relationality
DESCRIPTION:Online: Getting Well in an Unwell World – Walking the Buddha’s Path of Meditation and Relationality\n \nwith Sean Oakes\, PhD\n \nWednesdays\, October 23rd – November 20th\, 2024 | 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET\n \nPlease Note: Live sessions will take place from 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET. However\, if you are unable to attend live\, recordings of the sessions will be made available and sent out to all registrants the following morning\, allowing you to join the course on your own schedule.\n \n\n \nIn this 5-week course designed for those looking to deepen their practice — the first in a series of deepening practice and study courses—we will build the foundations of a sustainable and dynamic Theravāda Buddhist training. \nSomething needs to change. We find ourselves moving through a world shaped by the projects and struggles of our ancestors\, reckoning with the inheritance they left us\, part beautiful\, part terrible. We live in a place and time where every generation’s vision of how to live well is already obsolete by the time their children take the wheel. Each of us is one of those children\, and for many of us our way has been marked by poor guidance\, distorted histories\, and the erosion of grounded\, healthy culture. \nThe ancient South Asian teacher we call the Buddha established a path of community-based training in response to social upheaval and the need he saw for a new spirituality of heart\, inner clarity\, and accountability to the web of life. His principles\, which have always moved against the stream of the prevailing culture\, offer those who take them up a tested path to well-being and a vision for human flourishing. These teachings are laid out in a stunning body of oral literature called the Pāli Canon\, preserved by the Buddhist community known as the Theravāda\, or the “Elder Way.” \nWe’ll learn the basic skills of relationship and community-tending\, establish a solid meditation practice\, and engage with the Pāli Canon as both a teaching source and a literature of extraordinary beauty and depth. \nEach week we will meditate together\, read passages from the discourses\, and discuss the implications of the teachings for our lives here and now. You will come away with an approach to Buddhist practice that is flexible\, curious\, and joyful\, an earthy spirituality that honors the wise and well ancestors and the possibility of real awakening in our time. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion\n \nwith Marijke Eliasberg\n \nWednesday\, October 30th\, 2024 | 5:30pm – 6:15pm\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n \nIn the Insight or Vipassana meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below.
