SUMMARY:In-Person: Soulcentric Mid-Life - A Five-Month Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Soulcentric Mid-Life – A Five-Month Course \n \nwith Lin Wang Gordon\n \nFive Saturdays: November 2nd\, December 14th\, 2024\, January 11th\, February 8th\, March 8th\, 2025 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \nAre you in your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? \nEvery life stage brings its own gifts. Each life stage has its own purpose in our development as a whole being. In every season of our life\, there are changes and growth\, letting go and rebirth. Midlife could bring us menopause\, greying hair\, childcare\, eldercare\, an empty nest\, loss of loved ones\, second careers\, and relationship changes\, but we also have more life experiences and skills than we had in our younger years. Perhaps we also have more time and resources to find joy and explore our passions. While our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and crisis\, it could also be a great time for inner growth\, clarity\, and purpose. \nIn this 5-month course\, we will use inquiries\, experiential exercises\, and meditation practice to explore our underlying emotions around midlife issues. What are our fears\, doubts\, agitation\, hopes\, and dreams? How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we live a fulfilling life with the time we have left? As we have learned from our life experiences so far\, have we started to live in accordance with our inner values and deepest desires? How do we let go of our former selves and keep evolving? \nThis class is for exploring questions rather than having answers. It is based on Buddhist philosophy to help us transform our mind in approaching these inquiries. It is highly interactive and experiential in nature – we will spend much time in group work and less time in formal sitting practice. Central to this course is building a community among people in the midlife stage. \nWe will meditate\, journal\, form buddy groups\, and build community through sharing\, dialogues\, and group work. \nThis course will meet once Saturday a month for five months. We will meditate\, journal\, form buddy groups\, and build community through sharing and dialogue. \nThe class creates a sacred and supportive container to connect with others at the same life stage. Lin is a gifted teacher and guided us through a journey of facing mid-life with gratitude\, honesty\, and introspection. I came out of the class with a more expansive and empowered perspective on this unique stage of life. \n– A participant from Soulcentric Midlife\, 2023 \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, November 6th\, 13th\, 20th\, 2024 | 5:30pm – 6:15pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \nIn the Insight or Vipassana meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

The invitation will be to slow down and cultivate an attitude of curiosity and care to whatever might arise moment by moment. \nThe mind and heart are like the ocean. When gale-force winds of change are blowing\, navigating the tempestuous waves on the surface of the water can seem perilous. The secret is to drop below the surface\, and savor the stillness deep within. From the depths it is possible to observe the activities on the surface of the mind and heart with more ease and clarity. The day will include periods for engaging in solitary reflection through journaling as well as relational practices of deep listening. \nWhen times are urgent\, slowing down helps us recognize that\, even in the spaciousness of uncertainty\, there is room to act. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Practicing Hope - An Embodied\, Heart-Based Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Practicing Hope – An Embodied\, Heart-Based Retreat \n \nwith Leslie Booker and Dara Silverman\n \nSaturday\, November 23rd & Sunday\, November 24th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n \nMany of us are engaged with the world as activists or organizers. But even if you don’t identify that way\, you probably deeply care about the world and want to help change it. For those of us with a regular meditation or embodiment practice\, we might wonder how we can align the tools we use to find ease\, ground\, refresh\, and stay connected with our most deeply-held values. Without learning how to align our practice with our beliefs\, it can start to feel like escapism. But how do we move forward? \nIn this two-day non-residential retreat\, we’ll explore “hope” as a way through. What does it feel like to hold hope as an embodied practice in a tumultuous world? How do we cultivate love without spiritually bypassing? Is there a way to connect to our own sense of well-being and joy while remaining fully present to injustice and violence? \nJoin long-time friends and collaborators Booker and Dara as they weave together somatic (body-based) practices and the heart practices of the Buddha’s Brahmaviharas (expressions of love). Together we’ll cultivate these capacities in ourselves\, and nurture a fuller understanding of the body and heart. \nEveryone is welcome to participate\, regardless of experience with meditation or body-based practices. Please wear comfortable clothes you can move in. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Cultivating Thanksgiving with Indigenous and Buddhist Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:Online: Cultivating Thanksgiving with Indigenous and Buddhist Wisdom\n \nwith Bonnie Duran and Ramona Peters\n \nSaturday\, November 30th\, 2024 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nGiving thanks is a tradition in both Buddhism and Native American cultures. The Wampanoag people observed thanksgiving ceremonies throughout the year. In the 19th Century\, Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in the United States as a way to heal political divisions after the Civil War. \nGratitude and related practices can bring peace\, calm and happiness. Thanksgiving ceremony is a medicine that we can use to begin to heal ourselves\, our relationships\, and our world. \nIn this half day program\, teachers will offer meditation practices to develop gratitude which are grounded in Buddhist teachings and informed by their perspectives as Native Americans. This will be a day of meditation practice\, teaching\, and group discussion. All are welcome regardless of age\, race\, gender\, sexual orientation and level of meditation practice. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities.
