SUMMARY:In-Person: The Second Buddha – A Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: The Second Buddha – A Poetry Reading \nwith Yuyutsu Sharma\n \nThursday\, January 2nd\, 2025 | 1:00pm – 2:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nExperience an unforgettable afternoon of poetry and reflection with the Himalayan poet Yuyutsu Sharma. This special event\, “The Second Buddha: A Poetry Reading”\, highlights the poet’s deep connection to Himalayan Buddhism and his extraordinary poetic journey. \nSharma will read from The Second Buddha Walk\, a poetry collection inspired by the Rubin Museum’s “Second Buddha: Master of Time” exhibit\, which celebrates the life and teachings of the ancient Tibetan teacher Guru Padmasambhava. Yuyutsu will delve into the spiritual landscapes that shaped his verses\, weaving a rich tapestry of imagery and insight. \nIn addition to selections from The Second Buddha Walk\, Yuyutsu will share recent works rooted in Nepalese Himalayan Buddhism\, drawing from his acclaimed books\, Milarepa’s Bones\, The Nepal Trilogy\, and Annapurna Poems. These works explore themes of meditation\, pilgrimage\, and the enduring power of sacred geography. \nBeyond the readings\, Yuyutsu will offer a rare glimpse into the transformative role of meditation and shamanic practices across South Asia in shaping his journey as a global traveling poet. His reflections will interlace personal stories\, cultural observations\, and poetic wisdom\, creating a vibrant dialogue between tradition and modernity. \nThe event will conclude with a brief Q&A session\, allowing the audience to engage directly with the poet\, followed by a book signing opportunity. \nDon’t miss this rare chance to witness the lyrical magic and profound spiritual insights of Yuyutsu Sharma\, a poet whose words transcend borders and touch the soul. \nRegistration:\nThis gathering is open to all\, and if you are able\, we invite you to offer dana to New York Insight. Although there is no registration fee and your presence remains the greatest gift\, please consider making an offering through the form below. Much gratitude and appreciation for whatever you may offer. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

Meditation can be a powerful way to reduce stress. It can also help us to understand and relate to challenging feelings in healthier ways. \nAlong with these possible benefits\, and perhaps most importantly\, meditation offers us the opportunity to learn to be fully present and open to whatever is happening in our own experience\, just as it is. Through this kind attention\, happiness and peace grow in our lives; we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves and bring this awareness into our relationships and the world we share. \nIf you’ve been wanting to learn how to meditate or refresh and renew the meditation practice you already have\, we invite you to join this six-week meditation course to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) meditation in a warm\, supportive environment. \nWe will emphasize experiential practice\, including instructions for sitting and walking meditation\, and explore how we can bring this practice of presence into our everyday lives. \nClasses will include time for practice\, talks\, guidance from the teacher\, and plenty of time for sharing and Q&A. Each week suggestions and supports will be offered for exploring and sustaining your practice in between classes. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Online: Finding Joy and Grace in Uncertainty - An Eight-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Finding Joy and Grace in Uncertainty – An Eight-Week Course\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \nWednesdays\, January 8th – February 26th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\n \n\n \nWe live in what can be described as an uncertain\, “poly-crisis” moment\, with multiple existential threats: climate change\, numerous wars\, failing democratic norms\, widening social inequities\, and extreme polarization. \nMany of us feel this deeply\, physically\, and for some\, materially as well. Sometimes this compounds the smaller-scale crises in our lives. The mind tumbles into catastrophizing and what some call “horrified anxiety”—a close enemy of karuna\, compassion. \nIn fact\, every moment is uncertain. The Buddhist tradition characterized the world we live in as one of anicca\, or impermanence; it’s one of the three marks of existence. \nWhile we can accept\, understand\, and experience this\, the current state of the world might cause considerable anxiety\, if not outright panic and fear. \nBut the Buddha’s teachings offer a way to transcend this and become free\, regardless of our circumstances. Everything arises from causes and conditions\, and conditioned things are impermanent and lack any solid\, fixed nature. Everything is always on shaky ground—and\, on the upside\, much is possible. We can experience that non-fixedness as dukkha\, or suffering\, but that’s not the end of the story. Non-fixedness is also infinite potential\, possibility\, creativity. \nJoin us for an online eight-week course with New York Insight Teacher Jon Aaron exploring how we can live with uncertainty\, not from a place of fear but with buoyancy\, curiosity\, and ease. We’ll discover how the teachings provide practical ways of coping with these various threats and how we can cultivate joy in uncertainty instead of battling it in the doomed hope of clinging to certainties that ultimately will not last. \nEach class will include a period of meditation\, a talk\, and time for discussion. \nBy strengthening our capacity for joy and grace\, we can move forward into the muck (personal and societal) with compassion and fortitude\, however that arises within each of us. \nAll classes will be online via Zoom and recordings of the sessions will be available to all participants. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, January 8th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. But this disconnection can leave us feeling overwhelmed\, anxious\, or stuck in stress patterns. \nWithout tools to ground ourselves\, we often miss the inner guidance that fosters resilience\, clarity\, and peace. \nOver the course of this evening\, you’ll learn somatic meditation\, Buddhist mindfulness\, and Somatic Experiencing® (SE) techniques to help you reconnect deeply with yourself. Drawing on the combined wisdom of mindfulness and SE\, this class offers powerful practices to regulate the nervous system\, access embodied awareness\, and develop a compassionate relationship with your inner experience. \nGuided by principles of mindful awareness and SE’s focus on nervous system resilience\, you’ll learn to cultivate your “felt sense”—an intuitive way of tuning into body sensations and emotions as guides to your inner state. \nThrough gentle somatic exercises\, mindful movement\, and meditation\, you’ll release tension\, calm the nervous system\, and foster a grounded presence. \nEveryone is welcome to participate\, regardless of experience with meditation or body-based practices. Please bring a journal for taking notes. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. SUMMARY:Online: Life and Death Through the Eyes and Heart of the Buddha
DESCRIPTION:Online: Life and Death Through the Eyes and Heart of the Buddha \nwith Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm \nSunday\, January 12th\, February 2nd\, March 2nd\, April 6th\, May 4th\, June 8th\, July 6th\, August 3rd\, September 7th\, October 5th\, November 2nd\, December 7th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\nDo you think about your life as if it will never end? If you woke up each morning\, knowing you only had a year to live\, what would change? How might fear—or the busy “doing mind”—keep you from experiencing life as it is? What would happen if you awoke each day with play\, appreciation\, and joy? \nUntil we are directly confronted with mortality most of us don’t ask ourselves these questions. And without the right tools\, our resistance to death can leave us feeling afraid and isolated. \nThis course is about living fully in each moment of your life through the Buddha’s perspective—his core teachings. We will explore our thoughts and feelings about dying and how this process awakens us all to the preciousness of this life. Once a month for all of 2025\, we will meet to discuss how Buddhist teachings can help us greet death with an open\, loving mind. \nThese sessions are not just for those who society labels as “aging.” People of all ages and those interested in living life to the fullest are welcome. \nKnow that your registration in this class is a commitment to participate for the entire year in this process of discovery. There may be moments of sadness\, extraordinary joy\, and everything in between. Join us\, as we create a community that grows together and supports each other on this journey. \nPlease note\, the class size for this program is limited to 30 students\, so please register early if interested. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Margrit Pittman-Polletta\n \n\nRequired In-Person Orientation: Tuesday\, January 7th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, January 14th – March 11th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Sunday\, February 23rd\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm\n \nPlease Note: This course skips Tuesday\, January 21st\, 2025\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor\n \n\nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates: \nRequired In-Person Orientation Tuesday\, January 7th\, 2025 | 6:30 – 9:00pm\nIn-Person CourseTuesdays\, January 14th – March 11th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person DaylongSunday\, February 23rd\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $625 – Base $350 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Buddhist Meditation and Internal Family Systems – A Daylong Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Buddhist Meditation and Internal Family Systems – A Daylong Retreat\n \nwith Ralph de la Rosa\n \nSaturday\, January 18th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nThe Buddha taught that radical compassion is synonymous with full awakening\, and that one must begin with compassion for oneself. Compassion is a healer\, an alchemical force\, a grossly underestimated state of heart and mind. Self-compassion could heal every part of you\, if you stayed with it long enough. Self-compassion opens the door to the deepest of insights. \nThis daylong retreat is a primer in how to open to this presence in meditation and extend it towards parts of the psyche stuck on the treadmill of affliction. Utilizing the integration of Buddhism and the Internal Family Systems model presented in Ralph De La Rosa’s new book Outshining Trauma\, this daylong retreat will offer you: \n•Teachings from the Buddhist Lojong\n•A crash course in IFS and why it complements the Dharma so well\n•Breath techniques for opening space in the heart-mind\n•Meditations for directly experiencing of buddha nature\n•Meditations for extending self-compassion to parts of the psyche caught in affliction \nThis retreat is open to all levels and experience of practice. Please bring pen and paper. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Day of Refuge — Navigating Tumultuous Times with Clarity\, Humor\, and Strength
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Day of Refuge — Navigating Tumultuous Times with Clarity\, Humor\, and Strength \nwith Leslie Booker \nSunday\, January 19th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nWe are in the midst of a great sea change\, both politically and socially. We are being asked to divest—in companies\, political institutions\, or organizations that have disappointed us. Although there is something incredibly powerful in divesting\, it’s important to decide what we are choosing to invest in. What clouds the heart and mind so often is centering what we’re fighting against instead of what we’re fighting for. \nOver the course of this day of practice\, we’ll learn how to invest in ourselves. The poet Audre Lorde wrote\, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgent\, it is self-preservation and that is an act of political warfare.” \nTogether\, we’ll discover how staying present with the breath and in our bodies is actually an act of self-preservation and a tool to build emotional resilience. \nOn the eve of the inauguration and Martin Luther King\, Jr. Day\, join New York Insight’s Guiding Teacher Leslie Booker for a day of refuge and care. This retreat will be held in Noble Silence. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \n\nIn-Person Course: Wednesdays\, January 22nd – March 12th\, 2025 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, February 22nd\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm\n \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor\n \n\nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates: \nRequired In-Person Orientation Wednesday\, January 15th\, 2025\nIn-Person Course Wednesdays\, January 22nd – March 12th\, 2025 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person DaylongSaturday\, February 22nd\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $625 – Base $350 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:In-Person: Rubin Museum Mindfulness Meditation
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Rubin Museum Mindfulness Meditation \nwith Lavina Shamdasani \nThursday\, January 23rd\, 2025 | 1:00pm – 1:45pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nPractice the art of attention in this weekly meditation session hosted and curated by the Rubin Museum of Himalayan Art. \nFor centuries Himalayan practitioners have used meditation to quiet the mind\, open the heart\, calm the nervous system\, and increase focus. Mindfulness Meditation is a refuge from the world around us\, as well as an opportunity to engage with it more consciously. \nInspired by works of art from the Rubin’s collection and guided by expert teachers\, each session is framed around a monthly theme. The sessions are open to beginners and skilled meditators alike and include an opening talk\, a 20-minute meditation session\, and a closing discussion. \nLooking for more Mindfulness Meditation?
