SUMMARY:Online: Home Body – Being with What Is
DESCRIPTION:Online: Home Body – Being with What Is\n \nwith Jill Satterfield\n \nTuesdays\, February 4th – 25th\, 2025 | 7:00pm-9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nJust like everything in our minds\, the body—the material form of consciousness—is impermanent and of the nature to arise\, cease\, shift and change and always re-arrange. \nGenerally\, we’re familiar with the “gross” form of the body—our skin\, bones\, and tissues. But we may be less familiar with the “subtle body\,” which is unseen\, but felt\, and influences our mind states. \nIn this four-week course with Buddhist teacher Jill Satterfield\, we’ll learn about how the subtle body is actively communicating with (and altered by) the breath. We’ll also explore how the subtle body affects our thoughts and feelings\, imagination\, and conditioned beliefs. \nWe’ll begin each session by noticing our internal landscape: sensations\, breath\, thoughts and emotions. Following that\, we’ll practice ways to balance the central nervous system. Every session there will be a breath practice from the Buddhist yogic traditions with the intention to create more spacious\, open awareness. \nTogether we’ll develop a greater awareness of how breathing into an area of body affects the\ninner and outer landscape of the body. \nFinally\, we’ll work on making the subtle our home and a place of refuge. By attending to the breath with kind awareness\, we can create the space inside to be with what is. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, February 5th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: True Love – Cultivating Compassion on Valentine’s Day
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: True Love – Cultivating Compassion on Valentine’s Day\n \nwith Lavina Shamdasani\n \nFriday\, February 14th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nThe typical image of a “Buddhist” or a “meditator” is of someone who’s able to be perpetually kind and gentle toward their friends\, family\, romantic partners\, and the world. The reality is that many of us who practice meditation really struggle to offer everyone the same exact flavor of kindness. Plus\, we may find it especially difficult to extend compassion to ourselves. \nThis Valentine’s Day\, join meditation teacher Lavina Shamdasani for an evening of deepening compassion. Special attention will be given to working with self-forgiveness\, easing self-criticism\, and nurturing an accepting attitude toward difficult thoughts and emotions. Additionally\, Lavina will teach on how to remain open-hearted when we’re hurt by others. \nTogether\, we’ll practice metta (loving-kindness) and mindfulness meditation to help ease self-hate\, and learn how to live a life of balanced compassion. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, February 19th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? SUMMARY:Online: How Your Mind Shapes Your World – A Half-day Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Online: How Your Mind Shapes Your World – A Half-day Retreat\n \nwith Martin Aylward\n \nSunday\, February 23rd\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00 pm ET\n \n\nYour mind can be a playground\, or a prison. As Buddha reminds us in the first lines of the Dhammapada\, an ancient Buddhist scripture\, our mind-state directly determines our experience of the world. \nThis day of practice will be all about meeting your mind directly\, and understanding how it shapes your beliefs and behaviors. Beyond spiritual clichés about creating your own reality\, this day of practice will be something of a magical mystery tour through reality. \nWith teacher Martin Aylward\, you’ll contrast the worldview of scientific materialism with the Buddhist concept of ‘Chittamatra’ (Mind-only)\, looking beyond both extremes (that things exist\, and that things don’t exist!). \nJoin us for a deep-dive into the ‘Chittasphere’ as the location of all experience. We’ll dissolve inner and outer\, we’ll see if we can bend reality a little\, and what we can learn about mind\, world and existence along the way. \nTogether\, we’ll discover practices of: \n– Recognizing and resting in the cittasphere\n– Dissolving attention into experience\n– Seeing through limited beliefs about mind and world \nSave the date! Martin is also teaching a weekend retreat in-person at NYIMC on September 13th-14th\, 2025. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, February 26th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?

SUMMARY:Online: Rebuild Your Attention - Buddhist Practices for Focus\, Clarity\, and Joy
DESCRIPTION:Online: Rebuild Your Attention – Buddhist Practices for Focus\, Clarity\, and Joy\n \nwith Sean Oakes\, PhD\n \nThursdays\, February 27 – March 27\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:00pm ET\n \n\n \nAt the heart of Buddhist tradition is the ancient practice of meditation\, through which we train our faculties of attention and investigation with the aim of decreasing stress and suffering. \nMeditation has never been easy—people in the Buddha’s time struggled with distraction\, sleepiness\, and worry the same way we do—but our sped-up\, information-saturated culture makes it harder than ever. We all know it would be good to slow down and become more present\, but how do we really do this? \nThis 5-week course is the second in a series of practice and study courses aimed to build a strong foundation for Theravāda Buddhist training. Focusing in this series on meditation as attention training\, we will look at developing focus\, concentration\, and strong inner energy\, and why these are the core skills in meditation and mindfulness. You do not have to have taken the first course in the series to take this one\, and beginners are welcome. \nWe will read original texts from early Buddhist teachings preserved in the Pāli Canon\, as the source of our meditation instructions\, and weave in supporting material from contemporary neuroscience and psychology. Each week we will meditate together\, read passages from the discourses\, and support each other in building or deepening a daily meditation practice. You will come away with an approach to Buddhist meditation that understands the central role that pleasure and relaxation hold in concentration\, and actionable skills for slowing down and bringing focus back into your everyday life.
