SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Attuning the Body & Mind Through Meditation
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Attuning the Body & Mind Through Meditation \nwith Peter Doobinin \nSaturday\, March 1st\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nThe Buddha taught his students to be “in tune with the dharma.” In fact\, we might think of dharma practice as a process in which we learn to come into rhythm with ourselves and others. \nBut\, more often than not\, we’re out of tune. We live in a state of tightness\, stress\, and dis-ease. This quality of dissonance is indicative of the degree to which we’re cut off from the heart\, from our goodness\, from wisdom\, compassion\, love\, joy\, and peace. It’s a state in which we’re not able to function fully and effectively in our lives. \nIn following the Buddha’s path\, we learn to connect to the rhythm of life. In practicing breath meditation\, we learn to connect to and come into rhythm. In walking meditation\, we learn to maintain this elemental rhythm. Eventually\, we learn to extend this quality of being in tune to all our postures\, and in all our activities. More and more\, we are able to “tune in” to the happiness of the heart. \nThe day will include periods of sitting & walking meditation\, teaching\, and discussion. Some meditation experience is recommended\, but not required. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, March 5th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from March 5th through April 30th\, skipping April 9th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Peaceful Mind\, Peaceful Heart – A Five-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Peaceful Mind\, Peaceful Heart – A Five-Week Course \nwith Lani Miller \nTuesdays\, March 11th – April 8th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n“Praise and blame\, Gain and Loss\, Pleasure and Pain\, Fame and Disrepute are the eight worldly winds. They ceaselessly change. As a mountain is unshaken by the wind so the heart of a wise person is unmoved by all of the changes on this earth.” -The Buddha \nThe possibilities for us to be truly happy and peaceful in this life greatly increase when we are able to respond to life’s changes with awareness and balance. \nThe Buddha taught that when we are able to open to the truth of impermanence with the balance of equanimity\, we are more open to the possibility of a peaceful mind and heart. Through our own direct experience\, we come to realize that we have a choice and can let go of trying to control what cannot be controlled. By doing so\, we discover that greater and greater happiness can come our way. \nIn this five week course\, we will explore the beautiful practice of equanimity together. We will learn from observing our individual patterns of reactivity and noticing how it feels when we are able to respond\, instead of react\, to life’s circumstances. \nThe course will include time for meditation\, along with supportive practices and processes to help us explore how to bring the Buddha’s teachings on equanimity into our lives. There will be time for group sharing and interaction. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, March 12th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? SUMMARY:Online: The New Bodhisattva Path - How to Live in Dangerous Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: The New Bodhisattva Path – How to Live in Dangerous Times\n \nwith David Loy\n \nThursday\, March 13th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nWe are living in a dangerous time in human history. The “three poisons” of greed\, ill will\, and delusion have become firmly institutionalized. The ecological crisis\, in particular\, is the greatest challenge that humanity has ever faced. \nWhat does Buddhism offer that can help us understand and respond appropriately? And what does our present situation imply about how we understand and practice Buddhism today? \nJoin Zen teacher David Loy for a special online event exploring these urgent questions. David will make the case that the Bodhisattva Path\, understood in a non-sectarian way\, as the most important thing that Buddhism can offer today. \nIn the Buddhist tradition\, bodhisattvas\, or buddhas-to-be\, have a double practice: they continue to work on their own personal transformation\, but they also realize that their own awakening cannot be separated from the liberation of all living beings. \nIn addition to developing generosity\, ethical behavior\, endurance\, persistence\, contemplative practice\, and nondual wisdom\, the bodhisattva path emphasizes social engagement in the world—without attachments to results. Bodhisattvas do the best they can\, without knowing whether what they do will make any difference at all.\nJoin us to learn about embodying the bodhisattva path in tumultuous times. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Creativity and Meditation – A Daylong Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Creativity and Meditation – A Daylong Retreat \nwith Lani Miller\n \nSaturday\, March 15th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nBoth meditation and creativity involve opening to and allowing space for what is already present to emerge and be known. \nOver the course of this daylong retreat\, we will have the opportunity to explore and share how we experience and are inspired by the already present and inherent connection between these two ways of experiencing and opening to life. We will investigate how both meditation and creativity offer us ways to explore\, touch\, and express what really matters. \nWe will look at how creativity and art in all their manifestations can inspire us deeply\, and also offer the possibility of healing for ourselves and the world around us. Meditation can be part of and enhance this process\, by opening us to express and experience our creativity in deep\, meaningful\, and beautiful ways. We will consider how the sharing of our creativity combined with our spirituality can lead to positive and powerful transformation\, for ourselves and others. \nThis day will include short periods of meditation along with some time for creative processes. There will be time to explore within\, and participants will also be able to benefit from sharing their unique ways of experiencing and expressing creativity with each other. \nArtists\, meditators\, creatives\, and muses are warmly invited to participate in this day of practice. There will be time for group sharing and connection. \nSome previous experience with basic meditation practice is recommended. \nPlease bring along a notebook and/or paper\, pens\, and colored pencils or markers. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Insecurity\, Self-doubt\, Vulnerability\, and Other Unruly Dinner Guests
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Insecurity\, Self-doubt\, Vulnerability\, and Other Unruly Dinner Guests\n \nwith Paul Fulton\n \nSunday\, March 16th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nThere are two kinds of people: Those who experience feelings of self-doubt and insecurity\, and those who pretend they don’t. \nHow are we to understand these anxious feelings when they show up or persist? Is it evidence of a disorder in need of correction? A shameful weakness to be hidden from ourselves and others? Or\, per the Buddha’s teachings\, an inevitable feature of human existence? \nWhen we misperceive the nature of our insecurity\, we are at risk of pursuing ineffective–even harmful–strategies to feel safe. Over the course of this half-day retreat\, we’ll draw on Buddhist ideas and Western psychology to help us explore what contributes to our self-doubt\, and learn what constitutes wise action. Together we’ll investigate the elusive nature of “acceptance.” \nJoin clinical psychologist and Director of Harvard Medical School’s Certificate Program in Mindfulness & Psychotherapy\, Paul Fulton\, for a day of meditation\, reflection\, and a rich shared exploration and conversation about self-doubt and how we move toward a fresh understanding of these experiences. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Investigating the Three Characteristics of Existence
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Investigating the Three Characteristics of Existence\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \nMondays\, March 17th – April 21st\, 2025 (skips April 14th) | 9:30am – 11:30am ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nThese days\, the world feels more precarious than ever—political divisions are widening\, the climate crisis is accelerating\, wars are multiplying\, and the foundations of democracy appear more fragile than ever. \nIn times of such uncertainty\, we often reflexively cling to our identities\, opinions\, and the need for control. But this grasping–whether to a sense of self\, certainty\, or the way we think things should be—only intensifies our suffering. \nThe Buddha’s teachings on anatta (not-self)\, anicca (impermanence)\, and dukkha (suffering) offer a path to navigating this intensity with more clarity and resilience. \nIn this new in-person and online course\, meditation teacher Elaine Retholtz will lead an exploration of how these teachings apply to the challenges we face today. How can we engage with the world without becoming consumed by outrage or despair? How do we work for change without rigidly attaching to our views? How do we meet uncertainty without shutting down? \nThrough meditation\, reflection\, and discussion\, we’ll explore practical ways to loosen our grip on fixed identities\, stay present in difficult times\, and develop a deeper\, more sustainable way of responding to the world around us. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, March 19th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? SUMMARY:Online: The Subtle Art of Not Doing Anything
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Subtle Art of Not Doing Anything \nwith Jeff Warren \nThursday\, March 20th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET \n\nI would like to begin this program description by addressing a core problem that my target audience is facing. Here it is: \nLife. \nLife is hard! So much happening\, so many people doing important things\, running helter skelter all over in a flurry of productivity. \nThis 90 minutes is not about any of that. \nInstead\, it is about the art of doing nothing. As an aspiration. As a way to reset the nervous system and find more sanity\, and maybe also find some community. As a deep spiritual practice of undoing a lifetime of chronic stress and control-freak micromanagement. \nAnd that’s it. \nExpect a gentle guided practice or two. Expect elaborate theories of reality! (No\, don’t expect that.) Expect community discussion and jokes and maybe also tears and seriousness and maybe falling asleep too? OK\, best to not expect anything. \nGuiding meditation and sharing about practice is one of the great joys of my life. Come share in that joy. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level (quantity is limited). Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.)\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Mindful Tech - Building a Healthy Relationship with Our Devices
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Mindful Tech – Building a Healthy Relationship with Our Devices \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nSaturday\, March 22nd\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \nHumans have always used technology to improve our lives—from the discovery of fire to the Industrial Revolution —but the pace of technological innovation is increasing at a faster rate than ever before. In the last 25 years\, the internet\, smartphones\, and social media have reshaped how we live\, work\, think\, and connect. As these tools evolve\, we’re struggling to keep up\, losing some of our agency in the process. With AI on the horizon\, this challenge will only grow. \nIn this context\, a mindfulness practice has become more important than ever. By cultivating awareness of our thoughts\, emotions\, and physical sensations\, we can learn to regain control over our interactions with technology\, allowing us to maintain our agency in an increasingly digital world. We can learn how to ensure that technology serves us\, not the other way around. Together we’ll explore how to apply Buddhist philosophy to our relationship with desire\, aversion\, and attachments when we engage with tech. \nIn this daylong workshop\, we will examine our relationship with smartphones\, digital habits\, and the apps we use. We’ll explore questions like: What is our awareness of our digital habits? How do our mind and body feel when we engage with social media or news? How do we use tech to help us focus rather than to distract? What might a “tech detox” look like? What rituals can we develop to create a healthier relationship with tech? Our goal is not to reject technology—it’s here to stay—but to imagine how to build a healthy relationship when we engage with it. We’ll discuss practical ways to integrate technology into our lives in a way that supports our well-being\, rather than detracts from it. \nParticipants are encouraged to bring their lunch in order to maintain the meditative atmosphere and concentration. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity!
