SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, April 2nd\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from March 5th through April 30th\, skipping April 9th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: Building a Relevant and Transformative Meditation Practice
DESCRIPTION:Online: Building a Relevant and Transformative Meditation Practice \nwith Dave Smith \nSunday\, April 6th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00 pm ET \n \nMany of us turn to mindfulness looking for more clarity\, ease\, or steadiness in our daily lives—but it’s not always obvious how to get there. \nThe Buddhist path offers practical\, time-tested guidance: cultivate what’s helpful and let go of what isn’t. This simple but powerful principle can bring a sense of direction to our practice and help us make real progress\, both on and off the cushion. \nThis core idea is at the heart of the teachings on Right Effort\, and is further clarified in the Fourth Foundation of Mindfulness\, where the practice becomes about observing and transforming the state of the mind itself. \nIn this half-day workshop\, meditation teacher Dave Smith will guide us through these essential teachings\, offering practical tools and frameworks for how to work skillfully with our own minds. \nThrough guided meditation\, discussion\, and Q&A\, we’ll explore how to move past confusion or stagnation and develop a practice that’s genuinely transformative—something that helps us meet our everyday lives with more confidence\, steadiness\, and insight. \nThis event is open to all. No prior experience is needed. \nYou may also be interested in Dave Smith’s upcoming online course at NYInsight\, Mindfulness and the Middle Way – Cultivating an Authentic Dharma\, starting May 20. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Rediscovering Your Super Powers - Cultivating the 5 Spiritual Faculties
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Rediscovering Your Super Powers – Cultivating the 5 Spiritual Faculties \n \nwith Leslie Booker and David Grogan\n \nThursdays\, April 10th – May 15th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nAs a global community we face tumultuous political and cultural changes that can trigger a range of mixed emotions. You might feel overwhelmed\, stuck\, angry\, or fearful\, as well as a sense of urgency to move into action. \nThe good news is that you already have within you the capacity to empower your practice. The Buddha identified five innate human faculties that can be developed and strengthened into transformative powers for personal and collective liberation from suffering; faith\, energy\, mindfulness\, concentration and wisdom. \nBalancing the powers to ensure they work as a cohesive system is essential and involves an ongoing process of adjusting and readjusting\, much like fine-tuning an instrument. \nFaith gives us trust and confidence in the Dharma\, dispelling doubt—and inspires the energy needed to move forward. When energy has found its equilibrium\, then there is much more ease in the body. And from that ease\, there can be continuity of mindfulness\, and when there is steadiness of mind\, concentration grows. As concentration deepens\, in the stillness of an attentive mind\, wisdom emerges. It’s the wisdom of emptiness\, of letting go of all that is not true\, that brings about our liberation. \nThroughout the course\, we’ll explore each of these powers in practical\, grounded ways—through guided meditation\, relational practice\, and weekly reflection prompts that support integration both on and off the cushion. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, April 16th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Untangling Patterns of Reactivity – A Daylong Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Untangling Patterns of Reactivity – A Daylong Retreat \nwith nico hase \nSaturday\, April 19th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nEven if you consider yourself the kind of person who remains calm in the face of crisis\, sometimes things just get to us. If we’re not careful\, we might find ourselves growing tangled in negative thought patterns. Without a dose of healthy awareness\, a cycle of reactivity can deepen\, leaving us feeling disconnected from what we truly feel in every moment. \nThe Buddhist path offers us a way to untangle the tangles and step into freedom. In this daylong retreat\, visiting teacher nico hase will offer reflections and practices that help us understand where our reactivity comes from\, and how to gradually release ourselves from its grip. \nJoin us for a day of meditation and inquiry as we walk the path together to greater freedom\, connection\, and space. \nThe day will begin with an hour of conversation and an opening talk around the theme. We’ll then sit and walk for four hours in lightly guided practice\, before reconvening for a closing talk and further dialogue. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, April 23rd\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Moment by Moment - Taking Care in a Turbulent World
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Moment by Moment – Taking Care in a Turbulent World \nwith David Grogan \nSaturday\, April 26th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn these tumultuous times\, mindfulness is an essential tool for remaining calm and alert. In the quest to find a path forward\, however\, that’s not enough. What’s needed is for mindfulness to be infused with an ethical dimension—an attitude of care. That includes a recognition that all human actions\, large and small\, can have an impact. \nBefore he took his last breath\, the Buddha shared one key word as inspiration for his grieving disciples in their quest to find a path forward after his death. That word is appamada\, which in Pali means heedfulness or care. \nDuring this daylong retreat\, we’ll explore how this concept of care energizes meditation practice\, preventing it from becoming a static or habitual routine\, and transforms it into a tool for clarity and active engagement with the world—even in the face of seemingly insurmountable uncertainty and difficulty. \nTogether we’ll explore the multi-faceted aspects of mindfulness that appamada brings to life. Practices will include formal meditation and mindful movement\, as well as inter-relational practices and opportunities for self-reflection or journaling based on poetry prompts. Join us in sampling an approach to meditation and life that emphasizes the importance of seizing the moment and realizing the full potential of yourself and others. \nEveryone is welcome\, regardless of previous experience with meditation. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below.
