SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, May 7th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from May 7th through 28th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: Buddhist Practice as Medicine for Our Tumultuous Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: Buddhist Practice as Medicine for Our Tumultuous Times\n \nwith Narayan Helen Liebenson\n \nSaturday\, May 10th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n \nWe are living in tumultuous times. The Buddhist tradition promises an island that no flood of information\, suffering\, greed\, hatred\, or confusion can overwhelm. But how do we integrate these teachings into our lived experience—especially now? \nOver the course of this half-day online retreat\, Guiding Teacher at the Cambridge Insight Meditation Center Narayan Helen Liebenson will speak to how we can find true refuge amidst the chaos. \nThe Buddha taught that refuge can be found in intrinsic peacefulness\, as well as the dharma\, or teachings. The Buddha also stressed the importance of belonging to a community of spiritual friends who can support one another when times are tough. \nTogether we’ll discuss how these three jewels can be the medicine for a rapidly changing era. We’ll also touch on how to tap into the inner courage needed to face\, and practice with\, the flood of suffering in the world. By knowing and embodying our strength\, we can learn to be a refuge for others. \nThrough meditation\, discussion\, and guided reflection\, we will consider what it means to seek refuge in a way that supports our spiritual journey but remains connected to the world around us. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person: Sunset Meditative Walk – Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Sunset Meditative Walk – Brooklyn Bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park\n \nwith Lin Wang Gordon\n \nSaturday\, May 10th\, 2025 | 6:15pm – 8:30pm\n \nLocation: Meet at corner of Chambers St. and Centre St. in Manhattan\n \n\n \nWe often think of meditation as an indoor formal sitting practice\, but it’s a practice we can integrate anytime and anywhere. \nJoin us for an outdoor meditation as we walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and practice at Brooklyn Bridge Park during sunset. We will explore practices such as open awareness\, metta (loving-kindness)\, four elements\, spaciousness\, etc. \nTogether\, we will immerse ourselves in the beauty of a cityscape sunset\, fostering a deep connection with our body and mind\, with humanity\, and the natural world. \nWe will explore the rich history of Brooklyn Bridge Park\, a testament to community activism that has transformed an abandoned industrial space into a sustainable waterfront haven\, blending recreation with ecological preservation. \nThe meditative walk will start at the Brooklyn Bridge from the Manhattan side and continue over the bridge to Brooklyn Bridge Park. This experience will proceed rain or shine\, barring severe weather threats. In 2024 we held this walk at the end of a thunderstorm and saw double rainbows framing the bridge. \nTo reach the meeting location by Subway: Take 4\, 5\, or 6 train to the Brooklyn Bridge stop. We will meet at the intersection of Centre Street and Chambers Street. \nBoth beginners and experienced meditators are welcome. Hope to see you there! \n“Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge at sunset with Lin Wang Gordon was a life-changing experience. This wasn’t just a walk. It was an awakening. My understanding of nature\, the climate crisis\, and my role in it has shifted profoundly since that evening. I never expected the walk to be as insightful and impactful as it was\, and I continue to find new depth and meaning in the learnings I take from that walk every day.”\n– Participant from Brooklyn Bridge Sunset Meditative Walk\, 2024 \nRegistration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It keeps us engaged\, calm\, and energized as we continue to serve a world on fire. \nIn this daylong retreat with teacher nico hase\, we will explore teachings and practices that contribute to resilience. We will discuss how hyper-individualism contributes to fragility\, and why community is so important for overcoming our obstacles. \nWe’ll also unpack how meditation can help us balance our hearts and minds so that we can connect with others\, navigate the difficulties of shared spaces\, and ultimately find resilience in the engaged sangha that our world so desperately needs. \nJoin us for an engaging day of stories\, reflections\, and meditations about how Buddhist teachings and practices contribute to our resilience in the face of life’s challenges. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, May 21st\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?

SUMMARY:Online: Seeing the Dhamma - How Practice Leads to Understanding
DESCRIPTION:Online: Seeing the Dhamma – How Practice Leads to Understanding\n \nwith Sean Oakes\, PhD\n \nThursdays\, May 22nd – June 19th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n \nWhat does it mean to be free as we move through the world? The Buddha described freedom as the natural consequence of understanding all the experiences of embodied life in terms of how they affect our hearts. We crave reliable safety\, pleasure\, and connection but instead find life unsatisfying\, fleeting\, and even our sense of self unstable. These three “marks” can be seen in anything we bring our attention to. \nThis 5-week course is the third in a series of practice and study courses aimed to build a strong foundation for Theravāda Buddhist training. We will explore a set of teachings on how to understand the world\, looking at the core analytical lists of the marks\, defilements\, aggregates\, and sense bases. The heart of this study is the practice of applied mindfulness\, where we bring persistent\, loving attention to the world as we experience it\, with the aim to see how it works and be free of its snares. You do not have to have taken the other courses in the series to take this one\, and beginners are welcome. \nWe will read original texts from the Pāli Canon as the source of our meditation instructions\, and weave in supporting material from contemporary neuroscience and psychology. Each week we will meditate together\, read passages from the discourses\, and support each other in building or deepening a daily meditation practice. You will come away with deepened skill in Buddhist mindfulness\, and a framework for bringing the discernment of spiritual inquiry into every part of your life. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, May 28th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?
