SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, July 2nd\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This summer series has three sessions: July 2\, July 9\, and August 6. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: Cultivating the Joyful Heart - Buddhist Practices for Difficult Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: Cultivating the Joyful Heart – Buddhist Practices for Difficult Times \nwith Scott Tusa \nTuesday\, July 15th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n \nIn a world filled with uncertainty and challenge\, many of us find ourselves caught in cycles of fear\, anxiety\, and reactivity. These difficult emotions not only drain our energy but can also disconnect us from our natural capacity for joy and compassion\, leaving us feeling isolated and overwhelmed by life’s challenges. \nWhat if there was a time-tested path to transform these challenging emotions? The Buddhist practice of Boundless Joy offers a powerful antidote to fear and aggression\, helping us rediscover our innate capacity for well-being and compassionate service even amidst difficulty. \nThrough periods of meditation\, discussion\, and Q&A we will explore how Boundless Joy emerges naturally from practices of love and compassion. You will learn to recognize how these practices create the conditions for joy to arise even in difficult circumstances\, giving you practical tools to transform fear and aggression into spacious awareness and heartfelt connection. \nYou’ll learn specific techniques to: \n\nRecognize and cultivate moments of joy in daily life\, even during challenging times\nUse compassion practices to skillfully work with fear and aggressive emotions\nDevelop a more balanced relationship with difficult experiences by seeing the good in yourself and others\n\nJoin us on this journey to discover how the ancient wisdom of Buddhist practice can provide practical tools for modern challenges\, helping you transform fear into compassion and rediscover your natural capacity for joy—regardless of external circumstances. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Finding Refuge in an Unstable World
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Finding Refuge in an Unstable World\n \nwith Bradley Donaldson\n \nThursday\, July 17\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n \nIn times of uncertainty—whether personal or global—it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Often\, what we most desire is solid ground\, a place of peace and clarity within the chaos. But without a reliable inner refuge\, we can be swept away by stress\, anxiety\, and a sense of powerlessness. \nWhen we lack tools to meet life’s instability with steadiness\, we may begin to shut down\, which strains our relationships and also limits our ability to show up for what matters. \nIn this evening session with Buddhist teacher and former monastic Bradley Donaldson\, we will take a moment to pause and recenter. Through guided meditation\, shared readings\, and straightforward Dharma reflections\, we will explore how the Buddha’s teachings can help us find refuge—not in escaping the world\, but in turning towards it with compassion and clarity. \nYou will leave with some more tools for grounding yourself\, building resilience\, and discovering a steadiness that can carry you through uncertain times. \nJoin us to find your footing amidst life’s turbulence\, reconnect with a deeper sense of peace\, and experience the strength of building refuge—together. \nRegistration\nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: An Embodied Pathway to Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Online: An Embodied Pathway to Liberation \nwith Fleet Maull \nTuesday\, July 22nd\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \n \nMany of us struggle with racing thoughts\, chronic stress\, emotional overwhelm\, or a lingering sense of disconnection—from our bodies\, our purpose\, or even our sense of self. Traditional mindfulness approaches can sometimes feel distant or overly cognitive\, offering awareness without the tools to truly transform. \nWithout a grounded way to regulate the nervous system and reconnect with the body’s innate wisdom\, these patterns can keep us stuck—feeling reactive\, dysregulated\, or spiritually adrift. \nFaced with these challenges\, Fleet Maull\, founder of the Prison Mindfulness Institute\, developed a new approach to meditation. Neuro-Somatic Mindfulness (NSM) Meditation offers a practical and deeply embodied path to healing and awakening. Rooted in network neuroscience\, trauma-informed awareness\, and nondual wisdom traditions\, this approach helps you gently rewire your brain and restore balance through somatic presence and interoceptive awareness. \nIn this program\, you will: \n\nLearn to activate core self-regulation networks through body-based meditation techniques.\nCultivate a felt sense of safety\, clarity\, and inner coherence using breath\, posture\, and micro-movements.\nExperience direct practices that shift you from survival-mode into presence\, resilience\, and compassionate awareness.\n\nJoin us for a special evening of reconnecting with your body’s intelligence and building a resilient nervous system. Together we’ll learn how to meet life with more presence\, equanimity\, and purpose. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Six-Day Non-Residential Urban Meditation Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Six-Day Non-Residential Urban Meditation Retreat \nwith Leslie Booker and Dalila Bothwell \nSaturday\, July 26th – Thursday\, July 31st\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET\n(with an option for weekend-only participation: Saturday\, July 26th – Sunday\, July 27th) \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWe often think of retreat as a chance to get away—traveling to a quiet meditation center in a serene natural setting. But for those of us who live in cities\, this can create a split: retreat happens there\, life happens here. And as soon as we’re back in the noise and pace of the busy city\, all the calm and clarity we cultivated on retreat evaporates into thin air. \nThat’s why we’re excited to introduce a new kind of urban retreat experience we’ve been planning for several years: New York Insight’s first annual Six-Day Non-Residential Meditation Retreat. \nRather than stepping away from life\, we’ll explore what it means to deepen our meditation practice right in the heart of it. Practicing together in the same city where we live\, work\, and navigate daily challenges creates a powerful opportunity: we can begin to carry the clarity and presence of retreat into the rhythms of ordinary life—not just afterward\, but right as it’s happening. \nWhile much of the retreat will be held in silence\, NY Insight Guiding Teacher Leslie Booker and NY Insight former Deputy Director Dalila Bothwell will lead daily discussions on the Ten Paramis\, or Ten Perfections\, a set of qualities that can steady us in the floods of life. They include generosity\, ethical conduct\, renunciation\, wisdom\, effort\, patience\, truthfulness\, resolve\, metta and equanimity. Over the course of the week\, you’ll engage with this framework for cultivating the qualities of the heart that lead to liberation. Together we’ll learn how to nurture our innate ability to be calm and steady despite challenges and difficult thoughts and feelings. \nWe hope you can join us! Open to all levels of practitioners\, anyone may attend the whole week or join the retreat for just the first weekend. \nPlease note: Participants are encouraged to fully unplug from their email and mobile devices during the hours of the retreat and maintain the atmosphere of retreat practice when returning home each night. \nFAQs about the Urban Meditation Retreat\nDo I have to be a Buddhist?\nNo. People of all backgrounds and traditions are welcome. We expect the group to be diverse in experience level\, age\, and identity. \nDo I need to have a meditation practice?\nNot necessarily\, though some prior experience helps. The retreat begins gently and becomes more in-depth as the week unfolds. If you’re new to meditation\, we recommend starting with the weekend and seeing how it feels—you can always extend your retreat. Our teachers will check in with you throughout and are always available to support you. \nDo we sleep at the meditation center?\nNo. Each evening you’ll head home to rest and return the next morning for the next day of practice. \nWhat do we do for meals?\nWe will share lunch together in community. You can bring food from home or step out to pick something up nearby. \nCan I join the retreat online?\nYes. The entire retreat will also be offered via Zoom\, so you’re welcome to participate from the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re across the city or in another part of the world\, you’ll be able to fully join the retreat community and follow the daily schedule remotely. \nWhat if I can’t afford the full price?\nOur weeklong retreat is designed to be much more accessible than residential retreats\, but if you need it\, we have a generosity policy that helps participants with the cost of the retreat. We will also be happy to set up payment plans to help break up the price of the retreat. Please contact us at tashi@nyimc.org for more information. \nWhat if I can’t take a full week off?\nA full week of meditation with expert and highly-trained teachers is a rare and valuable opportunity—but we’re New Yorkers too and know how hard it can be to take a week off to do a retreat. That’s why we’ve made it possible to join just for the weekend\, so you can still benefit from retreat practice even with a busy schedule. \nDaily Retreat Schedule\n \n9:30am -10:30am – Morning Instruction\n10:30am -12:pm – Morning Practice Session & Small Group Discussion\n12:00pm – 2:00pm – Meal Break\n2:00pm – 3:00pm – Afternoon Practice Session\n3:00pm – 4:00pm – Dharma Talk\n4:00pm – 4:30pm – Group Discussion\n4:30pm – 5:00pm – Instructions for Taking Practice Home \nStill have questions? Consider signing up for a free one-to-one zoom meeting with either of the retreat teachers Leslie Booker or Dalila Bothwell. \n \nIn-Person Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities.
