This year\, we ask: \nWhat is Yom Kippur to you? What brings you to this day? Is it simply a ritual? An instinct (like animals and birds and fish migrating home)? Is it the memories of past experiences at NYI’s Yom Kippur retreats? \nIs there a belief that by going through the rituals of the day that somehow we will be forgiven? \nOr is it something deeper? An invitation to a journey of deep transformation? Trusting that if we are willing to go deep\, to face our fears\, regrets\, our karma that something unknown will emerge? \nWhile we are aware of the culture of “shul hopping\,” we strongly encourage you to stay for the entire day to engage in this internal and communal process of purification. \nAll are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast. \nThis daylong retreat is a dana (donation) based event. Thank you for your generosity! \nCLICK HERE to download the Outline of the Day\nCLICK HERE to download the Handout Booklet\nCLICK HERE to download the Chant sheet \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below at the level of support you are able and willing to provide. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Mindful Writing - Finding Our Authentic Voice
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Mindful Writing – Finding Our Authentic Voice\n \nwith Tracy Cochran\n \nFridays\, September 12th – October 10th\, 2025 | 4:00pm – 5:30pm ET | Sign up for any or all sessions\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n“If you’re invested in security and certainty\, you are on the wrong planet\,” teaches Pema Chodron. Yet the Buddha found a way to be grounded and clear in this ever-changing world—and he offered us his path. \nCombining mindfulness meditation with mindful writing\, we will discover how in the Buddha’s own time following the “right” steps meant living in alignment with our authentic nature. \nEach week we will begin with a guided meditation to ground in a state of relaxed presence. Next\, we will practice writing mindfully together. Each week teacher Tracy Cochran will provide fresh prompts aimed at helping you remember your own deepest experience—moments of connection and joy and wisdom. We will create a safe space together so that we can listen deeply to our authentic selves. Some may wish to share what they write but there will be no pressure to do so. \nJoin us on five successive Fridays as we explore the Buddha’s teachings and how they can spark enhanced creativity and expand our experience of the world. \nThis course is suitable for all beings—no meditation or writing experience required. \nWhat is the cure for the suffering that comes from feeling isolated and insecure? Guided by the steps of the Buddha’s ancient path\, we will experiment with how good it can feel to be part of a greater story. \nNote: If you’re not able to attend every session\, feel free to sign up for any number of “drop-in” sessions on the in-person or online registration forms below. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Connecting with the Source of Self-Compassion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Connecting with the Source of Self-Compassion \nwith Caverly Morgan \nSunday\, October 5th\, 2025 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nConnect with your compassionate nature.\nMany of us struggle to offer ourselves compassion because we are identified with a limited\, separate sense of self. This smaller self often feels inadequate\, unworthy\, or lacking the resources and knowledge to truly care for itself. This is the self that suffers. \nOpening our hearts transforms our lives\, granting us greater peace and resilience in the face of emotional challenges. We become happier and more satisfied. But when we cling to the notion of a limited self that must control everything and perfect every practice\, we amplify our suffering. We may even criticize ourselves for not being self-compassionate enough\, creating a vicious cycle of judgment and inadequacy. \nHowever\, when we connect with the heart of who we truly are—which is inherently wise\, loving\, and not separate from the whole—compassion flows effortlessly. It’s from this deep wellspring within our true nature that we can genuinely open our hearts to ourselves and others. \nThis workshop invites you to explore these profound questions: Who is the self in self-compassion? What is the heart that opens to ourselves\, others\, and life itself? Is there an “I” doing anything at all\, or are we simply resting in our true nature? \nWhen we awaken to our true nature\, we don’t bypass the world. We awaken to love it more fully. And self-compassion is the first expression of that love\, starting with the self we thought we were. \nJoin us as we access and embody loving Awareness\, where natural wisdom and compassion reside. \nWhat You’ll Learn:\n\nHow to respond to feelings of failure or inadequacy with kindness and care.\nHow to relate to difficult emotions with greater ease.\nHow to take the effort out of self-compassion practice.\nHow to access your true nature\, which is naturally compassionate.\nHow to rest in Being\, the heart of who we are.\n\nWhat You Can Expect:\n\nTeachings and Guided Meditations: Engage in insightful teachings and guided meditations to deepen your understanding and experience of compassion.\nDyads and Group Discussions: Connect with fellow participants through structured dyads and open group discussions\, fostering a supportive community.\nQ&A Sessions: Gain clarity and personal insights during interactive Q&A sessions with Caverly Morgan.\nJournaling: Reflect on your experiences and insights through guided journaling exercises.\n\nRecommended\, but not required reading: The Heart of Who We Are: Realizing Freedom Together \n  \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below.
SUMMARY:Online: The Buddha’s Teachings on Courage and Confidence
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Buddha’s Teachings on Courage and Confidence \nwith Celeste Young\n \nSunday\, October 12th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nOnline through Zoom \n \nHow do we sustain our practice in overwhelming times? Most of us struggle to find the balance between applying too little effort and striving too much in our meditation and Dharma practice. We may go through phases of feeling deeply connected and committed\, only to become discouraged or pulled away by life’s challenges. At other times\, we may feel inspired and enthusiastic about practice but unsure how to channel that energy effectively. \nWhat’s needed is a kind of balanced determination. The Buddha’s teachings on wise effort and the cultivation of vīriya—the courageous energy needed to stay present and continue practicing—offer powerful support. This wholehearted effort is strengthened when paired with saddhā\, or trust and confidence in the path\, which grows as we give ourselves wholeheartedly to practice. Together\, vīriya and saddhā can sustain us as we move toward greater freedom\, helping us meet the challenges of today’s world with clarity and resilience. \nIn this three hour program\, we will create a quiet refuge to explore these essential qualities and cultivate kind attention to the body and heart. The half day will include: \n\nGuided meditation\nDharma talks\nWalking meditation and mindful movement practice\nMindful inquiry\, discussion\, and Q&A\n\nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) If the Subsidized level is not realistic for you\, you are warmly invited to register at the Pay What You Can level and offer any amount you like. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. SUMMARY:In-Person: Sacred Homage - Fall Foliage and Nature Meditation at Chuang Yen Monastery
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Sacred Homage – Fall Foliage and Nature Meditation at Chuang Yen Monastery \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nSunday\, October 12th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 3:00pm \nLocation: Meet in the parking lot of Chuang Yen Monastery\n2020 Route 301\, Carmel\, NY 10512\nSee below for more information on carpooling and access via public transportation \n \nJoin us for a contemplative day of meditation and reflection amid the fall foliage at Chuang Yen Monastery in Putnam County. This sacred site\, home to the largest indoor Buddha statue in the Western Hemisphere\, has housed Ven. Bhikkhu Bodhi and a vibrant monastic community since 2006. \nDesigned by renowned architect I.M. Pei\, the monastery’s serene grounds and elegant halls—the Kuan Yin Hall (1985) and the Great Buddha Hall (1997)\, inaugurated by the Dalai Lama—offer a peaceful setting for spiritual practice. The halls house 10\,000 mini buddhas and many antique Buddha statues. \nPast participants were deeply moved by the beauty and stillness of these sacred spaces\, as well as the opportunity to learn about the monastery’s history\, rituals\, and deep ties to the Buddhist lineage. \nWe’ll begin our day with quiet exploration\, meditating among the walkways and halls as we immerse ourselves in the presence of this living temple. After a lovingly prepared vegetarian lunch offered by monastery volunteers\, we’ll head outdoors to walk the grounds and appreciate the fall foliage\, connecting with the changing season\, the land\, and our practice. We will spend much of the day in silence. \nTestimonial from past participants: \n“Visiting the Chuang Yen Monastery\, learning about its history\, and spending time in its beautiful spaces with Lin and others from New York Insight was a very special treat.” \nAbout Lunch:\nLunch is served from 11:30am – 1:30pm\, and is graciously provided by a team of volunteers who spend their weekends cooking and serving the community. As the monastery relies on donations to continue its work\, a suggested contribution of $7 per person is appreciated to help support this beautiful effort. You are also welcome to bring your own lunch. \nBring: Please feel free to bring your own water and snacks\, and bug/tick repellent. Please make sure to check for ticks after the event. \n\nSun hat and sunscreen\nBackpack to carry what you need (we will be walking around for most of the day)\nOrganic tick repellent (optional)\nOrganic bug repellent (optional)\n\nA Few Guidelines for Your Visit:\nAs we visit a living monastic community\, please be mindful of these guidelines to ensure a respectful and harmonious experience for all \n\nBring only vegetarian foods—no meat\, fish\, or eggs.\nRespect the flora and fauna: Please refrain from picking any plants\, flowers\, or vegetables\, and avoid disturbing or feeding any animals or fish.No smoking or alcohol is allowed anywhere on the premises.\nDrive cautiously: Keep your speed under 15 mph once you enter the monastery grounds\, especially in spring when small animals are more active.\nPark in designated areas only.\nDress appropriately: Please avoid wearing costumes\, tank tops\, or mini skirts.\nNo photography or video is allowed\, and drones are prohibited to maintain the peace and serenity of the space.\n\nLocation and Meeting Time:\n\nLocation: 2020\, Route 301\, Carmel\, NY 10512\nMeeting Time and Location: 10am at the parking lot of the monastery\n\nHow to Get There:\n\nCarpooling: After registration\, please fill out the carpooling survey linked in the confirmation email to let us know if you can offer a ride or need one. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Beyond Self-Care - Interdependence\, Survival\, and Collective Well-Being
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Beyond Self-Care – Interdependence\, Survival\, and Collective Well-Being \nwith nico hase\n \nThursday\, October 16th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n\nThe term self-care has deep roots. As Audre Lorde wrote\, “Caring for myself is not self-indulgence\, it is self-preservation\, and that is an act of political warfare.” \nFor many\, self-care has always been a matter of survival in systems that fail to protect and nurture. At the same time\, the phrase has been widely co-opted by the wellness industry\, often reduced to individual routines or consumer choices. \nThis evening with dharma teacher and psychologist nico hase—author of How Not to Be a Hot Mess: A Buddhist Survival Guide for Modern Life—will hold both of these truths. \nWe’ll honor the life-saving power of self-care while also asking: what happens when individual solutions are asked to solve collective problems? How can Buddhist teachings on interdependence help us expand the conversation beyond optimization and burnout toward mutual care and collective thriving? \nThrough stories\, guided practices\, and group reflection\, we’ll explore grounded ways to cultivate sustainable well-being that neither dismiss the radical roots of self-care nor get lost in performative wellness. Together\, we’ll shift the guiding question from “How can I feel better?” to “How can we thrive together?” \nJoin us for an evening that opens space for Buddhist wisdom to illuminate a path of resilience\, connection\, and shared flourishing. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Beyond the Scarcity Mindset - Generosity and the Path of Liberation
DESCRIPTION:Online: Beyond the Scarcity Mindset – Generosity and the Path of Liberation \nwith Devin Berry and Gina LaRoche \nSunday\, October 19th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nOnline via Zoom \n \nIn a time marked by fragmentation\, instability\, and growing disconnection\, it can feel difficult to stay open—or to step beyond our individual needs. The pull toward self-protection and scarcity is strong\, and yet\, these conditions are exactly where the heart practice of generosity becomes most vital. \nIn this half-day retreat\, we’ll return to dāna—the ancient Buddhist teaching of generosity—as a path toward freedom and interconnection. Through meditation\, Dharma reflection\, and relational practice\, we’ll explore how generosity can soften the heart\, nurture compassion for ourselves and others\, support letting go\, and remind us of the inherent reciprocity that sustains all life. \nParticipants will leave with: \n\nEmbodied practices for cultivating generosity in everyday life\nWays to extend generosity toward oneself as a foundation for giving to others\nA deeper understanding of generosity (dāna) as a liberating heart quality\nTools for meeting the world with courage\, care\, and reciprocity\n\nJoin us in reclaiming generosity not only as something we offer\, but as a way of being that heals and frees. \nIn the spirit of generosity\, this retreat is being offered at a special lower rate to make participation accessible to all. \nThis retreat is open to all\, regardless of meditation experience\, background\, or tradition. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Path to Freedom from Habitual Worry\, Reactivity\, and Obsession
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Path to Freedom from Habitual Worry\, Reactivity\, and Obsession \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, October 20th – December 8th\, 2025 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n\nIn the Four Noble Truths\, the Buddha pointed to the Eightfold Path as one way out of dukkha\, (often translated as unsatisfactoriness\, vulnerability\, or suffering) leading to complete freedom (nibbana). What is this path? \nThe Eightfold Path is often viewed as a kind of prescription or instruction manual: if I do this\, or if I behave this way\, I will suffer less. But as we look closer\, we begin to see this teaching as not just a way out of feeling bad\, but a profoundly ethical framework that unlocks a life of non-harming\, connection\, access to joy\, and contentment. It is a path that touches every aspect of our lives and relationships. \nThis path can help us get free from our habitual emotional reactions and cultivate a more wholesome\, engaged approach to life. \nIn this eight-week program\, we will explore how the Eightfold Path can be a source of groundedness\, clarity\, and direction that is available at all times. Together we’ll examine all 8 limbs of the path: Right or appropriate View\, Intention\, Speech\, Action\, Livelihood\, Effort\, Mindfulness\, and Collectedness. \nJoin New York Insight teacher Elaine Retholtz to learn what it means to practice these ancient teachings in the modern world. \nThis program is open to all—no prior study or experience required. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Elaine Retholtz \n\nIn-Person Course: Wednesdays\, October 22nd – December 17th (skips November 26th)\, 2025 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, December 6th\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. SUMMARY:Online: The Sure Heart - Emotion\, Healing\, and Buddhist Psychology
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Sure Heart – Emotion\, Healing\, and Buddhist Psychology \nwith Sean Oakes\, PhD \nThursdays\, October 23rd – November 20th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET \n \nCan meditation and mindfulness support us in our emotional life? Absolutely. The Buddha’s teaching is frequently understood as a kind of psychology\, or science of mind\, and the core of the Dhamma is a set of teachings on how to work with the strong habitual emotions and energies that lead to harmful action. The result of practice is not an abstract metaphysical wisdom but a profound happiness and peace that is called “the sure heart’s release.” This release naturally includes a healing of old wounds and a restoration of healthy relating with ourselves and others. \nIn this 5-week course we’ll look at the Buddha’s teachings on emotion and healing\, exploring how to bring mindfulness\, insight\, and skillful response to powerful states like love\, fear\, anger\, and grief. This is the fourth in a series of practice and study courses aimed to build a strong foundation for Theravāda Buddhist training. You do not have to have taken the other courses in the series to take this one\, and beginners are welcome. \nWe will read original texts from the Pāli Canon as the source of our meditation instructions\, and weave in supporting material from contemporary neuroscience and psychology. Each week we will meditate together\, read passages from the discourses\, and support each other in building or deepening a daily meditation practice. You will come away with deepened skill in Buddhist mindfulness\, and a framework for bringing the discernment of spiritual inquiry into every part of your life. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. SUMMARY:Online: Steadying Our Center - Heartful Breathwork for These Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: Steadying Our Center – Heartful Breathwork for These Times \nwith Dalila Bothwell \nSunday\, October 26th\, 2025 | 5:30pm – 7:30pm ET \nOnline via Zoom \n \nIn times of uncertainty and change\, our breath can be a reliable and helpful anchor. In this nourishing online session we will practice the wisdom of conscious breathing and heart-centered awareness. \nBreathwork is the practice of using intentional breathing patterns and techniques to cultivate deeper states of awareness\, healing\, and presence. Unlike simply observing the natural breath in traditional meditation\, breathwork involves actively engaging with the breath as a transformative tool – using rhythm\, depth\, and conscious direction to possibly access emotional release\, somatic healing\, and expanded states of consciousness. \nRather than working with breath as a mental object alone\, we’ll explore how the breath moves through our entire being – softening the heart space\, releasing tension\, and creating a felt sense of groundedness through the body. This embodied approach helps us stay present not just with our thoughts\, but with the full spectrum of our human experience. \nJoin us in cultivating the steady heart that can meet whatever arises with wisdom and compassion. \nFormat\nOur time together will include brief dharma reflections\, guided meditation\, breathwork\, journaling and gentle movement. No prior breathwork experience is necessary – just bring your openness and your meditation cushion. \nAll instructions are invitational; you can participate to the degree it is supportive and resonant. \nWhat You’ll Need\n\nQuiet space\nComfortable cushion or chair\nOptional: blanket\, nourishing beverage\, notebook for reflections\n\n  \nRegistration:\nPlease register below.
