SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Body Remembers Freedom - Meditation\, InterPlay\, and the Art of Coming Home to Yourself
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Body Remembers Freedom – Meditation\, InterPlay\, and the Art of Coming Home to Yourself \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts\n \nThursday\, November 6th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nOffered monthly on 1st or 2nd Thursdays\, 6:30 – 8:30pm ET — see full list of dates below. What if your body already carried the wisdom you need to heal\, connect\, and come home to yourself? What if play could be a blessing? \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is a monthly gathering where we explore the intersection of meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice. Each session includes time for stillness and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay — a playful\, powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to unlock the wisdom of the body. \nTogether we create a space that welcomes laughter\, tears\, rest\, and joy — a space where you can move freely\, feel deeply\, and be held in community. Through this practice\, we remember what it feels like to trust ourselves\, to breathe fully\, and to belong. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and each other\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life — and themselves — with compassion and presence\n\nWe gather to remember the sacred in the ordinary\, to bless our own aliveness\, and to reconnect with community\, the earth\, and the truth in our bones. \nCome as you are. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Honoring the Grieving Heart
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Honoring the Grieving Heart \nwith Lama Rod Owens \nSunday\, November 9th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWe are living through a period of apocalypse\, a chaotic period of truth telling and unveiling. Many of us are struggling to make sense of the impact we are experiencing in our personal lives\, relationships\, and in our communities. \nTo move through this period\, we must rely on our capacity to grieve\, to touch into the sadness of change and loss and tend to it with compassion. In this compassion\, we can allow our hearts to break and in the breaking be held by the understanding that we are not alone in this grieving. \nOnce we allow ourselves to be in relationship with our grief\, then it can begin to teach us how to move through sorrow and hopelessness into clarity and connectedness. Yet most importantly\, our relationship to grief through compassion opens the space for joy and gratitude. \nJoin Lama Rod for a mid-autumn offering to yourself and your communities as the seasons change and the year comes to a close. Through evoking the sacred lineage of Ma Tara\, the female Buddha of liberatory compassion\, we will explore this liberating relationship with grief through guided ritual and energetic practice in order to open and resource our hearts to keep moving on. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. Through mindfulness\, play\, and rest\, we will deepen our connection to ourselves\, each other\, and the present moment. \nIn our hyper-connected\, fast-paced world\, we can forget how to rest and just be. Together we will explore what it means to bless our aliveness—not by striving or achieving\, but by softening\, listening\, and allowing space for what is most real to arise. \nThe day will include guided meditation\, dharma reflections\, group sharing\, and InterPlay—a creative\, embodied practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling and stillness to awaken the wisdom of the body and nourish connection. Come as you are\, and leave refreshed\, inspired\, and more fully alive. There will be an opportunity to purchase signed copies of Kaira Jewel’s two books: We Were Made for These Times: 10 Lessons in Moving through Change\, Loss\, and Disruption and Healing Our Way Home: Black Buddhist Teachings on Ancestors\, Joy\, and Liberation. \nEveryone is welcome\, regardless of experience with meditation or Buddhism. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Online: Cultivating Thanksgiving with Indigenous and Buddhist Wisdom
DESCRIPTION:Online: Cultivating Thanksgiving with Indigenous and Buddhist Wisdom\n \nwith Bonnie Duran and Ramona Peters\n \nThursday\, November 20th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\n \n\n \nGiving thanks is a tradition in both Buddhism and Native American cultures. The Wampanoag people observed thanksgiving ceremonies throughout the year. In the 19th Century\, Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday in the United States as a way to heal political divisions after the Civil War. \nGratitude and related practices can bring peace\, calm and happiness. Thanksgiving ceremony is a medicine that we can use to begin to heal ourselves\, our relationships\, and our world. \nIn this evening program\, teachers will offer meditation practices to develop gratitude which are grounded in Buddhist teachings and informed by their perspectives as Native Americans. This will be a day of meditation practice\, teaching\, and group discussion. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Finding Care in the Overwhelm - Hope as a Counterculture Practice (Weekend Retreat)
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Finding Care in the Overwhelm – Hope as a Counterculture Practice (Weekend Retreat) \nwith Leslie Booker and Dara Silverman \nSaturday and Sunday\, November 22nd-23rd\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAs transformative justice leaders Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes have taught us\, hope is a discipline and a practice that inspires us to live a whole and integrated life. \nIn this two-day non-residential retreat\, we’ll explore care for self and others as a way through in a tumultuous world\, and to cultivate love without spiritually bypassing. To find a way to connect to our own sense of well-being and joy while remaining present to injustice and violence. We’ll explore how to be in community with others exploring the same questions. \nJoin long-time friends and collaborators Booker and Dara as they weave together somatic (body-based) practices and the heart practices of the Buddha’s Brahmaviharas; expressions of loving-kindness\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity. Together\, we’ll cultivate these capacities and deepen our understanding of how to embody hope\, love\, and presence. \nAs a group\, we’ll be together in the questions: \n\nHow can we hold hope without bypassing the realities of injustice and hardship?\nHow do we stay rooted in joy and well-being while staying fully present to the world around us?\nHow can meditation and somatic practice support our engagement with the world (rather than provide an escape?)\n\nIs this for me? If you are interested in learning more about your body\, responses under pressure and capacity to be in relationship with other people – this is for you. If you are an organizer\, consultant\, trainer\, coach or activist\, this is a place for you to deepen and build your commitment to a just world. This retreat is a place to deepen in your somatic awareness\, embodied practice and learnings. \nEveryone is welcome to participate\, regardless of experience with meditation or body-based practices. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person: Guided Meditative Hike on Hook Mountain for Inner & Outer Exploration
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Guided Meditative Hike on Hook Mountain for Inner & Outer Exploration \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nFriday\, November 28th\, 2025 | 9:45am – 3:00pm \nLocation: Meet at Rockland Lake State Park\, South Entrance\nRoute 9W and Lake Road\, Valley Cottage\, NY\, 10989\nSee below for more information on carpooling and access via public transportation \n \nInspired by movements to get outside on Black Friday\, we invite you to join us in the beautiful Hudson Valley for a guided\, meditative hike—an opportunity to reconnect with both the inner landscape and the natural world. \nThis hike takes the scenic route along the Long Path—into the Rockland Lake State Park and up Hook Mountain. Enjoy expansive vistas from only 1.5 hours outside of the city\, and an extraordinary area designated by the New York Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. \nMuch of the hike will be observed in silence and we will integrate nature meditation practices throughout the day — allowing our senses to come alive and our sense of separateness to fall away.  Together\, we will cultivate a deeper intimacy with the land—and with our  inner landscape—moving through the day with reverence and presence. \nWe will foster a reciprocal mindset: as the land nourishes us\, we give back through gratitude\, awareness\, and care.  Through this shared exploration\, we will reflect on what it means to see the dharma in wilderness\, and to walk through the world with presence\, connection\, and awe. \nThe hike will be approximately from 10am – 3pm. \nWhen: 9:45am-3pm\, Friday\, November 28\, 2025 \nWhere: Rockland Lake State Park\, South Entrance on Route 9W and Lake Road\, Valley Cottage\, NY\, 10989. (Use “753 Route 9W” for Rockland Roots GPS. The park entrance should be one block ahead). It’s parking field #4. There is a picnic table under a big tree near the toll booth of the parking lot. \nLength and Elevation: Approximately 5.8 miles\, 698 ft elevation – Relatively moderate hike\, but there are sections of ups and downs\, please bring hiking poles and wear proper hiking shoes. \nMeeting Time: We’ll meet at a picnic table right next to the park lot at 9:45am.  Restrooms will be available. \nDrivers: Since not many people have cars in NYC\, if you do have one\, offering rides to your fellow hikers will be deeply appreciated.  We will try to coordinate rides to reduce the transportation cost either from the city or from the Tarrytown train station. \nExpect an $8 parking fee. Arrive by 9:45 a.m. and drive into the Rockland Lake State Park\, South Entrance on Route 9W and Lake Road\, Valley Cottage\, NY (299 Lake Rd. Valley Cottage\, NY\, 10989).  There is another parking lot about a mile further north on Route 9W (parking lot #2).  Please make sure you are at parking lot #4.  South Entrance parking lot is an open space with a lot of picnic tables and a large building complex. \nCarpool: We will coordinate carpooling a few days before the hike. Please register as early as possible and fill out the carpooling survey on the registration confirmation email\,  so we have ample time to coordinate carpooling. Registration is closed on EOD\, Tue. 11/25. \nPublic Transportation: Take the Metro North Hudson Line (~8:15-8:30 am) at Grand Central to Tarrytown Station by ~ 9:15am.  Take a 20-minute cab ride from Tarrytown to Rockland Lake State Park South Entrance on Route 9W and Lake Road\, Valley Cottage\, NY. (299 Lake Rd. Valley Cottage\, NY\, 10989).  We will try to arrange drivers to pick up participants from the train station whenever possible.  On the return trip\, you will take the ~3:57pm train back from Tarrytown to Grand Central.  Exact train schedule to be confirmed when it gets closer since it will run on a holiday schedule. \nThe program fee does not include transportation cost. \nWe aim to start the hike at 10:00 am and will walk to the trailhead together from the parking lot. \nBring:  \n\nHiking poles (please bring them if you have them)\nWear hiking shoes please\nComfortable athletic clothing in layers – (avoid cottons)\nRain gear if needed\nYour lunch and snacks\n1-2 liters of water\nA backpack\nSunscreen\nOrganic tick repellent (optional)\nOrganic bug repellent (optional)\n\nMaximum enrollment: 28 people. Registration will close at the end of Tuesday\, 11/25 to allow time to coordinate carpool. \n  \nRegistration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.
