SUMMARY:In-Person: Interconnectedness - Art Exhibition and Reception
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Interconnectedness – Art Exhibition and Reception \nwith works by Lydia Dona\, Nicole Parcher\, and Stephen Pusey \nReception: Saturday\, January 3rd\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 4:00pm ET\nExhibition open until January 31st\, 2026\, whenever NY Insight is open. \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nNew York Insight Meditation Center is pleased to announce Interconnectedness\, an exhibition of fourteen works by Lydia Dona\, Nicole Parcher\, and Stephen Pusey—three brilliant artists\, each of whom reenvisions abstraction in dynamic and exceptional ways. Ludic\, liquid\, intense\, animated\, employing what Félix Guattari would call “ensemble[s] of lines of alterity\,” these innovative artworks offer “virtual possibilities\, unprecedented new becoming.” \nEmphasizing the physical act of painting and drawing\, where the aleatory and improvisatory\, the volatile and energetic\, and a massive “lexicon” of marks (dabs\, drips\, splashes\, smears\, scribbles\, etc.) converge\, these works not only singularly express deep and profound feeling but a generous spirit of knowing and not-knowing\, of the synergy between thoughts and bodily actions\, evoking how mind influences body\, body influences mind\, where both dissolve\, forming vast webs\, networks\, rhizomes\, tapestries\, where everything—actions\, beings\, and the universe—are interdependent. All the artists featured in Interconnectedness live and work in New York City. Interconnectedness was curated by John Madera. \nClick HERE for Madera’s essay about the artwork in the show. A price list for the artwork in the show is available at NY Insight and upon request. \nA reception for Interconnectedness will occur on January 3\, 2026: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. It will feature a conversation with the artists moderated by Madera. Updates about the exhibit may be found on this site. The artwork may be viewed until January 31st\, 2026\, whenever NY Insight is open. \nInquiries about the works in the show may be sent to John Madera. \nReception RSVP:\nIf you are planning on attending the reception on Saturday\, January 3\, please RSVP using the form below. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

This workshop is free\, but your dana (donations) help us sustain offerings like these. SUMMARY:In-Person: Sacred Earth Sangha - Activism on the Path
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Sacred Earth Sangha—Activism on the Path \nThursday\, March 19th\, 2026 | 6:30pm-8:30pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, on the 12th Floor \nBefore we head back outdoors in a few weeks\, we’ll gather once more at the Center to reconnect with the original intention of NYI’s Sacred Earth Sangha: a community grounded in deep practice and conscious engagement with the intertwined climate and ecological crises\, along with the social justice issues they touch. While our emphasis in recent times has been contemplative nature practice\, our commitment has always been to meet these urgent realities with wisdom\, compassion\, and courage. \nAt this gathering\, led by Maho Kawachi and Ben Dillon\, Tom Carling\, a founder of SES\, will offer reflections and guide a conversation on the intersection of activism and Dharma practice\, and on the role of socially engaged Buddhism in our time. We hope you’ll join us. \nIn April\, SES will resume gathering in the city’s green spaces\, where we practice attuning to the living earth—trees\, rivers\, birds\, soil—even in the midst of the urban landscape. These walks invite intimacy with the natural world\, helping us cultivate presence\, gratitude\, and wonder in everyday surroundings. \nSpace is limited\, so please register to reserve your spot. \nAll are welcome. No previous meditation experience is required. \nRegistration\nIf you are having trouble completing your RSVP or donation\, please CLICK HERE to open it in a new browser. All proceeds will support this sangha’s teacher(s) and NYIMC. Please contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nFee by donation: Suggested starting donation is $15 but whatever you offer is greatly appreciated and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Joy of the Dhamma - A Special Event with Bhante Buddharakkhita
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Joy of the Dhamma – A Special Event with Bhante Buddharakkhita \nwith Bhante Buddharakkhita and Leslie Booker \nCo-Sponsored by Tricycle: The Buddhist Review \nSaturday\, January 10th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nNew York Insight\, in collaboration with Tricycle: The Buddhist Review\, is honored to welcome Bhante Buddharakkhita for a special daylong program exploring The Joy of the Dhamma. \nJoin us for a rare opportunity to practice with a senior monastic teacher whose life and teaching embody the dharma in both formal meditation and community life\, integrating inner practice with ethical action\, service\, and collective care. \nThe day will begin with a morning of guided practice and teaching from Bhante\, focused on joy as an essential and cultivated quality of the path. Participants will explore how joy functions within Buddhist practice as a source of energy\, clarity\, and continuity\, and how it can be intentionally cultivated to support wisdom\, compassion\, and resilience in daily life. Drawing on meditative experience and classical dharma teachings\, Bhante will examine how joy arises through mindful engagement with the heart-mind and the world\, and how it helps sustain practice over time. \nIn the afternoon\, Bhante will reflect on nearly twenty years of the Uganda Buddhist Centre\, which he founded and serves as abbot\, offering insight into what the dharma looks like when expressed through long-term commitment\, community building\, and service in the world. He will then be joined in conversation by Leslie Booker\, Guiding Teacher at New York Insight and the Centre’s first international guest\, for a dialogue on practice\, joy\, and the role of community in sustaining our spiritual path. \nParticipants will explore joy as a cultivated and supportive aspect of Buddhist practice\, gain insight into how the dharma is lived beyond formal meditation\, and reflect on what it means to sustain practice through service\, community\, and long-term commitment. \nWe hope you can join us for this day of practice\, reflection\, and conversation. All are welcome! \n\nThis program is brought to you by New York Insight Meditation Center and Tricycle: The Buddhist Review \nNote: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:Online: How to Thrive in Hard Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: How to Thrive in Hard Times \nwith Stephen Fulder \nSunday\, January 11th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nWe are faced with ever more challenging daily life situations. There is growing conflict and insecurity at the personal\, political\, social and planetary levels. We are sensitive souls\, and can easily feel overwhelmed\, helpless and sometimes lost. For some of us it can be hard to settle and meditate. \nHow can such situations be our wake-up call? How can we find equanimity and steadiness—to be like an island in the stormy seas—as in the classic Buddhist metaphor? How can wisdom and compassion that is less personal\, more universal and limitless actually be a source of empowerment that can help us to go out and make a difference? \nStephen will be bringing some of his experiences and reflections after 30 years as a leading dharma teacher in the thick of Middle East conflict. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Margrit Pittman-Polletta \nIn-Person Orientation: Tuesday\, January 6th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, January 13th – March 10th (skips January 20th)\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, February 21st\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 45-60 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 46 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates: \nFree Orientation (required): Tuesday\, January 6\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nCourse: Tuesdays\, January 13 – March 10 (skips January 20)\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nDaylong: Saturday\, February 21\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $715 – Base $420 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. Email registration@nyimc.org for more info. \nParticipants may register after the orientation for this class takes place\, but must still view a recorded orientation\, complete the pre-class questionnaire and arrange a pre-class interview with the teacher. If would like to register for this course but are not able to make it to the orientation\, please email us at registration@nyimc.org so we can make the necessary arrangements with the teacher. \nRegistration for this program is now closed. Please contact us at registration@nyimc.org if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: What Is Freedom? Rest\, Wise Effort\, and Nourishing What We Want to Grow
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: What Is Freedom? Rest\, Wise Effort\, and Nourishing What We Want to Grow \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts\n \nThursday\, January 15th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAt the start of a new year\, many of us feel compelled toward striving and self-improvement. That same pressure often follows us into our spiritual practice\, layered on top of long-standing habits of pushing ourselves and harsh self-judgment. \nThis evening workshop with teachers Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts draws on the Buddha’s teachings on the Four Right Efforts\, exploring how freedom develops through learning when to apply effort\, when to rest\, and how to listen to the body’s intelligence. Rather than tightening the strings of the lute or letting them go slack\, we practice tuning them so clarity and ease can emerge naturally. \nThrough meditation\, gentle movement and play\, shared inquiry\, poetry\, and moments of quiet\, we explore how to nourish what supports clarity\, joy\, and steadiness\, without forcing change or improvement. This work invites a direct\, embodied sense of how freedom is cultivated through wise effort rather than pressure or self-correction. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. You are welcome exactly as you are\, with curiosity and a willingness to be present. \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is offered monthly on the first or second Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET and is offered in a hybrid format. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, Linds Roberts guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. You are welcome to register for a single session\, select multiple dates\, or join the full series at a discounted rate. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nRegister for one session or the full series (at a discount!) below.\n2026: January 15 | February 12 | March 12 | April 9 | May 7 | June 18 | July 9 | August 6 \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\nIn-Person Full Series\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\nOnline Full Series\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:Online: Understanding Anger - A Trauma-Informed Approach (Two-Part Workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Online: Understanding Anger – A Trauma-Informed Approach (Two-Part Workshop) \nwith Amma Thanasanti \nSaturdays\, January 17th and 24th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 12:30pm ET \n \nNot all anger is the same. \nAnger is often treated as a single emotion to be suppressed\, managed\, or released. In our life and practice\, it arises in distinct ways\, each with its own causes\, functions\, and implications. \nThis two-part online series explores anger through a more nuanced lens\, helping participants discern which expressions of anger can be worked with skillfully in meditation and which signal the need for additional forms of support. \nWorking with Different Forms of Anger \nIn this workshop\, we will explore situational irritation\, boundary-protecting anger\, righteous anger\, and trauma-based rage\, examining what each is communicating and why different approaches are required. Participants will explore the protective and informative nature of anger and learn how to listen to it without becoming overwhelmed or shutting down. \nWhen Meditation Is—and Isn’t—Enough \nThe program also addresses why standard meditation instructions sometimes fall short when working with anger\, and how to recognize when meditation practice is helpful—and when additional therapeutic or trauma-informed support is needed. \nParticipants will be introduced to practical frameworks for working with everyday\, low-risk anger; guidance for assessing personal patterns; and pathways for ongoing support\, including trauma-informed therapy\, Integrated Meditation Program (IMP)\, trauma-informed mindfulness approaches\, and SHINE-based frameworks. \nFormat and Approach \nThis is an educational and lightly experiential workshop grounded in trauma-informed principles. Experiential exercises will work only with mild\, present-moment irritation and are always optional. This is not a space for trauma processing or deep emotional work. \nSessions include teaching\, guided mindfulness practices with clear boundaries\, individual reflection\, optional small-group pattern recognition (not processing)\, and time for questions and resource guidance. \nWho This Program Is For \nThis workshop is well suited for meditation practitioners who want to work more skillfully with anger\, who sense that their current practice has not fully addressed their anger patterns\, or who are curious about trauma-informed approaches to difficult emotions. \nParticipants will leave with a clearer understanding of different types of anger\, tools for working with everyday irritation and frustration\, greater confidence in discerning what kind of support their anger patterns call for\, and concrete next steps for ongoing practice or care. \nSchedule \nFour 90-minute sessions: \nSession 1: The landscape of anger\nSession 2: Working with low-risk anger\nSession 3: When meditation isn’t enough\nSession 4: Resources and pathways forward \nDates: January 17 and January 24\, 2026\nTime: 9:30 am–12:30 pm Eastern Time \nFrequently Asked Questions \nQ: Is this appropriate for beginners? \nA: This workshop is designed for anyone with some meditation experience who wants to understand anger more deeply. No advanced practice required. \nQ: What if I get activated during the workshop? \nA: We use trauma-informed approaches with clear boundaries. You control your engagement level\, can step away anytime\, and the facilitator is available for support. Activation is treated as useful information about what you need\, not a problem. \nQ: Will I process my trauma? \nA: No. This workshop helps you understand your anger patterns and find appropriate resources for deeper work. We work only with mild\, present-moment experiences. \nQ: Is the small group sharing required? \nA: No. All experiential components are optional. You can work individually throughout if you prefer. \nQ: What’s the difference between this and therapy? \nA: This is education and awareness-building\, not therapy. It will help you recognize what kind of support you need and where to find it. \nQ: Will recordings be available? \nA: Yes\, recordings will be sent to all registrants within a few days of each session. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. This registration will grant attendance for you and your buddy. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:Online: Mindful Ikebana - The Contemplative Art of Flower Arranging
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindful Ikebana – The Contemplative Art of Flower Arranging\n \nwith Anjie Cho\n \nSundays\, January 18th – February 1st\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET\n \n\n  \nJoin us for a special three-week online course exploring ikebana\, the Japanese art of flower arrangement\, as a contemplative practice that works directly with attention\, form\, and the natural beauty of flowers. \nWorking with living materials offers a direct way of engaging impermanence\, balance\, and form—qualities that also sit at the heart of meditation practice. \nIn this three-week online course\, Anjie Cho introduces ikebana as a contemplative art that unfolds through sustained\, hands-on practice. Offered in this extended\, multi-week format for the first time\, the course allows participants to work slowly and deliberately\, returning to core principles with increasing clarity and care. \nRather than a single-session workshop\, this structure creates more time and space to practice at home\, observe what emerges\, and deepen understanding through feedback from the teacher and group. Each week builds on the last through repetition\, reflection\, and guided inquiry. \nParticipants are introduced to foundational ikebana forms\, beginning with a freestyle Moribana arrangement\, moving into the structural principles of Heaven\, Earth\, and Human\, and concluding with Nageire\, an upright and expressive style. Between sessions\, participants create arrangements in their own space and share them with the class for viewing and optional feedback. \nA central focus of the course is learning how to work with what is available. Participants source flowers and natural materials locally\, developing an intuitive understanding of how palettes come together through relationship\, contrast\, and restraint—addressing one of the most common questions in ikebana practice. \nThis workshop has long filled quickly when offered in person. The online format makes it possible to welcome a wider group of participants while also offering a deeper learning experience over time. \nThis program is open to all levels. No prior experience with ikebana or visual art is required. All sessions will be recorded and shared with registrants. \nMaterials\nFlower and equipment are NOT provided. Basic equipment will support your at-home practice after the first class. Many participants will already have suitable containers and scissors\, though a kenzan may need to be purchased. Materials can be ordered directly from Anjie’s website or through her Amazon store. All equipment will be discussed in more detail during the first session. \nNote: This program will be recorded. Recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session\, so you are welcome to register even if you cannot attend one or more sessions live. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Online: Getting Unstuck - How Meditation Changes Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Online: Getting Unstuck – How Meditation Changes Your Life \nwith nico hase \nSunday\, January 18th\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \n \nFeeling stuck in old patterns? Wondering whether meditation actually changes anything about how you move through the world? \nJoin dharma teacher and psychologist nico hase for a clear\, honest exploration of how meditation helps us shift deeply ingrained habits—not as a quick fix\, but as a steady practice that changes how we meet difficulty\, relate to others\, and show up for our lives. \nDrawing from thirty years of practice—including six years as a Zen monk and intensive Vipassana training with Joseph Goldstein—nico will explore what actually transforms as you practice. How the mind begins to catch reactivity before it explodes. How emotions become workable rather than overwhelming. How a little more space\, presence\, and kindness can reshape even the patterns that feel most entrenched. \nThis isn’t a talk about techniques or Buddhist philosophy. It’s about the real\, lived changes that emerge from consistent meditation—the quiet shifts in perspective that gradually alter everything from conflict to career uncertainty to the small frustrations that trip us up each day. \nFormat: The afternoon includes guided meditation\, nico’s reflections on how meditation creates meaningful life change\, and generous time for questions and community dialogue. \nWhat People Are Saying\n“With his PhD in counseling psychology and his decades-long commitment to meditation and dharma practice\, nico brings a unique depth and perspective to his mentoring and teaching. Working with him can help you make real changes\, right now\, in the midst of your busy life.” —Judson A. Brewer\, MD PhD\, Director of Research and Innovation\, Brown University Mindfulness Center \n“Meeting nico changed the course of my life.” —Olivia S. \nPerfect for: Anyone wondering if meditation can help with the places they feel stuck—whether you’re new to practice or have been sitting for years and are ready for fresh perspective on how contemplative practice meets real life. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Canceled: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nIn-Person Orientation: Wednesday\, January 14th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Wednesdays\, January 21st – March 11th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Sunday\, February 22nd\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor \nPlease Note: Due to unforeseen circumstances this program has been canceled \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates: \nFree Orientation (required): Wednesday\, January 14\, 2026 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nCourse: Wednesdays\, January 21 – March 11\, 2026 | 9:30am – 12:00pm\nDaylong: Sunday\, February 22\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $715 – Base $420 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings.

DESCRIPTION:Online: What Can I Offer\, How Can I Care\, What Can I Lay Down? \nwith Leslie Booker \nSunday\, January 25th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nDue to the impending snow storm\, we have moved this program to be online only. \n \nIt can be hard for many of us to integrate what we’re hearing in dharma talks and practicing on the cushion\, into our everyday lives. \nAnd sometimes these 2600-year-old teachings are hard to reconcile with the level of complexity and nuance of our modern world. \nThe teachings on the Paramis\, the 10 attainments of the heart\, give us direct instruction on just how to do that. Considered the origin story of the Buddha\, they start with the basics: Dana (generosity)\, Sila (ethical conduct) Nekkhamma (renunciation). \nOn this Day of Practice\, we’ll be exploring what we can offer\, how we can care and what we can lay down in order to be released from our suffering. Weaving together early Buddhist stories\, lived experience and time for contemplation\, we’ll reflect on what these teachings offer around living from a generous heart\, acting ethically in a complex world\, and discovering the freedom that comes from letting go—of possessions\, identities\, and views that keep us bound. \nThis retreat is open to both new and experienced practitioners and will be a day of still and moving practices\, journaling\, dharma talks and discussion. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time.\n \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nPlease register below for online participation via Zoom. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Five Spiritual Powers
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Five Spiritual Powers \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, January 26th – March 2nd (skips President’s Day\, February 16th)\, 2026 | 9:30am – 11:30am ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n\nNote: due to the severe winter weather forecast\, the first session of this course (January 26th) will take place online only. \nIn a time of what seems like constant stress and confusion\, many of us feel vastly under-resourced—like we might not have what it takes to face each day. But each of us have within us the capacity to develop lasting resources that we can call on in challenging times. These resources are known as the Five Spiritual Powers\, sometimes called the Five Spiritual Faculties\, and consist of Faith (Confidence)\, Energy (Courage)\, Mindfulness\, Collectedness (Concentration)\, and Wisdom. All of us\, no matter our background or experiences\, possess the seeds of what is needed to nurture these qualities within ourselves. \nOver the course of this five week course\, we’ll investigate all five of the spiritual powers\, first learning how to notice where and when they are present and not present. \nWith the help of teacher Elaine Retholtz\, you’ll work on cultivating these skillful qualities of mind and uprooting the tendencies that cloud the mind and heart. \nTogether we’ll discover how to incorporate awareness of the five spiritual powers into our meditation practice and our daily lives. These special qualities of mind lead us to greater degrees of freedom from our habitual habits and reactivity. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity!
