SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, March 4th\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from March 4th through March 25th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: Cultivating Simple Joy in Daily Life - A Four-Week Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Cultivating Simple Joy in Daily Life – A Four-Week Course \nwith Amy Selzer and Nancy Glimm \nSaturdays\, March 7th – 28th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nDo you find that you go through your day on automatic pilot\, barely paying attention to subtle moments of contentment\, peace and joy that arise? Joy is an inner state that we can cultivate and experience in our daily life with practice. It is not dependent on external conditions or life’s circumstances. It is possible for joy to arise without you having to do anything\, get anything or have anything happen. \nIn this 4-week course\, you will be guided toward the practice of opening your heart and having access to being present to small moments throughout the day\, where joy arises. We all have joy within us and we can learn to take charge of deepening it. \nTogether\, we will practice looking inward as we experience the feeling of well-being and recognize joy in the subtle moments of life. This course will include a variety of Buddha’s teachings along with the Brahma Viharas as an overarching guide. \nDuring this program\, you’ll learn: \n\nHow to reclaim some of the joy you once felt but now feels “lost”\nWays to notice love and contentment present in your life\, right now\nHow to practice gratitude\nHow to let go of what’s no longer serving you in your journey towards joy\n\nNote: This program will be recorded. Recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session\, so you are welcome to register even if you cannot attend one or more sessions live. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Power of Play - Improvisation\, Trust\, and The Gift of Aimlessness
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Power of Play – Improvisation\, Trust\, and The Gift of Aimlessness \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and My Tong\n \nThursday\, March 12th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn this session\, we explore the power of play as a doorway into aimlessness\, a freedom from striving\, fixing\, or achieving anything at all. Through gentle InterPlay and meditation practices\, we let the body rest from effort and rediscover trust\, spontaneity\, and ease. When nothing is required of us\, creativity naturally emerges\, not as something we produce\, but as something we allow. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. You are welcome exactly as you are\, with curiosity and a willingness to be present. \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is offered monthly on the first or second Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET and is offered in a hybrid format. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, My Tong guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. You are welcome to register for a single session\, select multiple dates\, or join the full series at a discounted rate. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nRegister for one session or the full series (at a discount!) below.\n2026: March 12 | April 9 | May 7 | June 18 | July 9 | August 6 \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\nIn-Person Full Series\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\nOnline Full Series\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Work Sex Money Dharma - Full Weekend Retreat + Online Series
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Work Sex Money Dharma – Full Weekend Retreat + Online Series \nwith Martin Aylward \nHybrid Weekend Retreat: Saturday and Sunday\, March 14-15\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET\nOptional Online Follow-Up Sessions: Tuesday – Thursday\, March 17-19\, 2026 | 12:00pm – 1:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAcross many wisdom traditions\, spiritual practice has often followed two broad paths. One emphasizes stepping away from the entanglements of ordinary life in pursuit of clarity and awakening. Another invites us to engage life fully and use its challenges\, desires\, and responsibilities as the ground of practice. \nWork\, sex\, and money sit at the center of that tension. These domains shape how we relate to others\, how we organize our time and energy\, and how we understand intimacy\, ambition\, and security. They are also powerful places where our habits of mind\, fears\, and desires become visible. \nIn this immersive weekend retreat\, meditation teacher Martin Aylward invites participants to bring mindful attention to these deeply human themes. Through meditation\, reflection\, and relational dialogue exercises sometimes described as “meditation out loud\,” we will explore how our conditioning around work\, intimacy\, and material security shapes the way we live and relate to others. \nOver the course of the retreat\, each theme will be explored in depth. Participants will examine their relationship to work and livelihood\, intimacy and sexuality\, wealth and security\, and how these areas intersect with their values and spiritual path. \nOptional online follow-up sessions during the week offer an opportunity to reconnect\, share reflections\, and continue integrating insights into everyday roles and relationships. \nAll sessions will be recorded and available for rewatching or future reference. \nIn-Person Registration:\nNote: The Tuesday-Thursday follow-up sessions are online-only\, even if you attend the weekend retreat in person. \nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: When the Worldly Winds Blow - Resilience in Times of Stress\, Fear\, and Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: When the Worldly Winds Blow – Resilience in Times of Stress\, Fear\, and Uncertainty \nwith David Grogan \nTuesdays\, March 17th – April 7th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn these tumultuous times\, fear and uncertainty magnify the perception that we are being blown about by circumstances beyond our control. The Buddha\, who also lived during an era of alarming social discord\, called the volatile forces that unsettle hearts and minds the Eight Worldly Winds: gain and loss\, praise and blame\, status and shame\, pleasure and pain. Join our four-week course and cultivate a greater capacity to weather the blustery stresses of modern life\, as well as find stability and clarity in the eye of a superstorm. \nEach week\, through foundational meditation practices\, explore how to anchor your attention and face difficult emotions without being consumed by them. In paired dialogues and group discussion\, practice speaking and listening from mindfulness and compassion\, transforming habitual reactions into opportunities for connection and insight. Weekly journaling prompts will help map the winds as they show up in daily life and dismantle patterns of reactivity. \nEveryone is welcome\, regardless of previous meditation experience. Learn how to hold your seat amid the centrifugal energy of the eight worldly winds and meet a precarious world with wisdom and an unshaken heart. \nSpots are very limited\, so register early to ensure your access to these teachings! \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Sacred Earth Sangha—Activism on the Path \nThursday\, March 19th\, 2026 | 6:30pm-8:30pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, on the 12th Floor \nBefore we head back outdoors in a few weeks\, we’ll gather once more at the Center to reconnect with the original intention of NYI’s Sacred Earth Sangha: a community grounded in deep practice and conscious engagement with the intertwined climate and ecological crises\, along with the social justice issues they touch. While our emphasis in recent times has been contemplative nature practice\, our commitment has always been to meet these urgent realities with wisdom\, compassion\, and courage. \nAt this gathering\, led by Maho Kawachi and Ben Dillon\, Tom Carling\, a founder of SES\, will offer reflections and guide a conversation on the intersection of activism and Dharma practice\, and on the role of socially engaged Buddhism in our time. We hope you’ll join us. \nIn April\, SES will resume gathering in the city’s green spaces\, where we practice attuning to the living earth—trees\, rivers\, birds\, soil—even in the midst of the urban landscape. These walks invite intimacy with the natural world\, helping us cultivate presence\, gratitude\, and wonder in everyday surroundings. \nSpace is limited\, so please register to reserve your spot. \nAll are welcome. No previous meditation experience is required. \nRegistration\nIf you are having trouble completing your RSVP or donation\, please CLICK HERE to open it in a new browser. All proceeds will support this sangha’s teacher(s) and NYIMC. Please contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \nFee by donation: Suggested starting donation is $15 but whatever you offer is greatly appreciated and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Online: The Wisdom of Our Emotions - The Alchemy of Embodied Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Wisdom of Our Emotions – The Alchemy of Embodied Compassion \nwith Scott Tusa \nThursday\, March 19th\, 2026 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET \n \nIn this evening program\, we’ll explore how to work skillfully with emotions—not by transcending or suppressing them\, but by meeting them with embodied compassion. When we learn to feel our emotional experiences with gentle awareness and warmth\, something remarkable happens: the very sensations that seem to trap us can open into unexpected spaciousness and wisdom. Drawing on practices from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition\, we’ll discover how bringing compassionate presence to our felt experience naturally unlocks insight and freedom. \nWhat You’ll Take Away: \n\nA practical way to meet difficult emotions without being overwhelmed – Learn how to work with anxiety\, grief\, anger\, and other challenging states through compassionate presence rather than avoidance\, giving you greater emotional resilience in daily life.\nDirect experience of how feeling can lead to freedom – Discover how bringing gentle awareness to your emotional landscape naturally creates spaciousness and insight\, transforming emotions from obstacles into doorways.\nTools rooted in Buddhist wisdom that you can use immediately – Walk away with embodied practices you can apply whenever emotions arise\, helping you respond to life’s challenges with more warmth\, clarity\, and ease.\n\nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. SUMMARY:Online: Letting Go in Four Stages
DESCRIPTION:Online: Letting Go in Four Stages \nwith Martine Batchelor \nSaturday\, March 21st\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nMost of us try to be wise and compassionate in our actions and relationships. However\, we often repeat patterns which cause hurt to ourselves and others. The meditative path encourages us to let go of these patterns. But what does letting go really look like? How can we truly “let go” and re-engage with the world? \nDuring this 3-hour program\, we will look at the four stages of letting go\, and learn about and practice mindfulness. We will learn about meditation’s capacity to open our potential for letting go and creatively engage with the world. We will develop stability and calmness\, and cultivate clarity by exploring our triggers\, habits\, and conditions and by being mindful of our felt experience. \nWith the help of Buddhist teacher and author Martine Batchelor\, you’ll find that you are not as stuck as you think you might be. You have already experienced moments of letting go. You have the capacity to recognize and further develop these moments\, as well as your creative potential for change. \nThere is not just one way of letting go but many. Join us to explore each moment of letting go and learn how to creatively engage with wisdom and compassion in all aspects of your life. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Moving with Kindness - A Half-Day Yoga Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Moving with Kindness – A Half-Day Yoga Retreat \nwith Oneika Mays \nSaturday\, March 21st\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nThese are hard times. The world feels overwhelming\, and many of us are asking: what do I do? How do I keep going? \nThis half-day retreat is a place to resource yourself—to tend to your own heart so you can stay present for what’s needed. Through gentle yoga\, mindfulness practice\, and yoga nidra\, we’ll explore metta (lovingkindness) as something alive in the body. \nYou’ll learn to notice resistance in your body and develop tools to respond rather than react. We’ll practice the difference between these two—and why it matters. You’ll discover how metta works as a movement practice\, helping you stay connected to your heart even when things get hard. \nThis isn’t about feeling better\, it’s about building the kind of strength and fortitude that sustains you and the people around you. Everyone is welcome. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Embodied Awareness - Finding Inner Safety through Somatic Meditation
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Embodied Awareness – Finding Inner Safety through Somatic Meditation \nwith Kathy Cherry \nSunday\, March 22nd\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn Buddhist teachings\, the image of someone swept down a fast-moving river—grasping at reeds and branches that cannot hold—mirrors how we cling to familiar thoughts\, emotions\, and identities when safety feels uncertain. In this daylong retreat\, we will explore this metaphor as a doorway into understanding our own nervous system. We’ll use the spirit of these teachings to illuminate how our survival responses express an intelligent body seeking stability. \nThroughout the day\, you’ll have repeated opportunities to slow down\, practice\, and directly experience how safety becomes more available through embodied awareness. Through somatic meditation\, mindfulness\, Somatic Experiencing® techniques\, gentle movement\, guided inquiry\, and shared reflection\, you’ll learn to listen to sensation\, pace your experience\, and allow your system to settle. \nAs groundedness grows\, clarity and choice naturally emerge. This retreat is open to all; practices are gentle\, invitational\, and adaptable to your needs. \nNote: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Becoming a Master Gardener of Your Heart and Mind
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Becoming a Master Gardener of Your Heart and Mind \nPart 1: Recognizing the weeds – exploring the Five Hindrances \nwith Elaine Retholtz \nMondays\, March 23rd – April 27th (skips April 20th)\, 2026 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nNo matter what you may think about “meditation\,” it is\, at its core\, a cultivation of the mind and heart. And just as in cultivating a garden\, we must learn to distinguish the weeds from the flowers (or vegetables!)\, in our formal and life practices our task is to discern what mind states are harmful and what states support a life of contentment and freedom. \nOftentimes\, practitioners focus only on getting rid of the weeds and neglect actually learning how to cultivate the beautiful\, thus missing out on learning that cultivating the beautiful discourages the growth of the weeds. There is no need to get rid of all of the weeds before cultivating the crops. (Think of companion planting\, for those of you who garden!) \nIn this\, the first part of this series\, we will learn to identify the “weeds” — known as the Five Hindrances. These are: craving\, aversion\, restlessness and worry\, sleepiness and dullness\, and doubt. \nIn the second part of the series\, we will learn how to cultivate more wholesome qualities – the flowers and vegetables that nourish the heart and mind. These are the Seven Factors of Awakening: Mindfulness\, Investigation\, Energy\, Joy\, Tranquility and Collectedness. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
