SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Meeting the Parts That Disturb Our Peace - A Mindfulness-Based IFS Writing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Meeting the Parts That Disturb Our Peace – A Mindfulness-Based IFS Writing Workshop \nwith Tracy Cochran and Beej Christie Karpen \nSaturday\, May 2nd\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nDid you ever wonder why meditative states don’t last? How moments of spacious awareness can so quickly give way to painful\, constricted states? \nThese states are often driven by our inner children—the hurt\, wounded ones and the slightly older ones trying their best to defend them. \nThis unique half-day workshop weaves together guided mindfulness meditation\, reflective writing\, and gentle inquiry. Through the transformative framework of IFS (Internal Family Systems)\, participants are invited to cultivate a compassionate relationship with their inner world. \nOur inner parts will be welcomed and gently investigated—allowing a deeper wisdom and awareness to emerge. In IFS this wise\, embodied Presence is called Self. In Buddhism this same spacious state is called No Self—in both it is an attention that heals us into wholeness. \nThis workshop is suitable for both experienced meditators and newcomers\, offering practical tools for daily life\, creative expression\, and compassionate self-understanding. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost. Simply select “1” from the drop-down next to the Bring a Buddy level\, and enter your special discount code (provided in your Circle of Friends welcome email) to reduce the price to that of a single\, standard registration. This registration will grant attendance for you and your buddy. \n \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nPlease register below for online participation via Zoom. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, May 6th\, 2026 | 5:30pm – 6:30pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from May 6th through May 27th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Universe in a Hand – Encountering Our True Nature through the Four Immeasurable Minds of Love
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Universe in a Hand – Encountering Our True Nature through the Four Immeasurable Minds of Love \nPart of The Body Remembers Freedom Series\n \nwith Kaira Jewel Lingo and Linds Roberts\n \nThursday\, May\, 7th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET (optionally\, bring your dinner at 5:30pm to enjoy in community) \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \nThe teaching of Indra’s Net reveals a universe of radiant interconnection\, where each of us is a unique jewel\, reflecting and being reflected by the whole vast net of existence. This session invites us to feel this truth in our bodies and hearts through play and presence. \nWe’ll engage in a practice of meeting others eye-to-eye in brief\, heart-opening encounters that invite us to see ourselves and each other as expressions of boundless love—cultivating kindness\, compassion\, joy\, and equanimity. Then\, through a simple drawing exercise\, we’ll map the visible and invisible elements—the people\, places\, and beings—that weave together to create the miracle of who we are. Together\, we remember that we are not separate individuals\, but a community of beings in communion. \nIf you are joining in person at NY Insight\, you are optionally invited to arrive at 5:30pm and bring your dinner. We will eat together for a few minutes in mindfulness and then have time to share and connect before the class begins at 6:30pm. \nThis session will include a simple drawing exercise. If you are joining via Zoom\, please have some paper and a pencil/pen/crayons/markers (whatever you prefer to use) on hand. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. You are welcome exactly as you are\, with curiosity and a willingness to be present. \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is offered monthly on the first or second Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET and is offered in a hybrid format. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, Linds Roberts guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. You are welcome to register for a single session\, select multiple dates\, or join the full series at a discounted rate. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nRegister for one session or the full series (at a discount!) below.\n2026: | May 7 | June 18 | July 9 | August 6 \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\nIn-Person Full Series\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\nOnline Full Series\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Coming Home to the Body - A Daylong Meditation Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Coming Home to the Body – A Daylong Meditation Retreat \nwith Chas DiCapua \nSaturday\, May 9th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWe spend much of our lives with attention directed outward\, seeking fulfillment through distraction\, consumption\, and busyness. The Buddha described the gap between what we are experiencing and where our attention is as stress. \nThis daylong retreat offers an alternative. Through sitting and walking meditation\, the Resident Teacher at the Insight Meditation Society\, Chas DiCapua will guide participants in body-based awareness practices\, including awareness of the breath\, that bring attention back to the present moment. When the mind settles into the body rather than chasing after the next thing\, we can begin to access qualities already present in us: sympathetic presence\, expansiveness\, and ease. \nThis retreat is suitable for practitioners at all levels who want to deepen their relationship to the body as a foundation for meditation practice and daily life. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Free Seven Day Urban Meditation Retreat Info Session and Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Online: Free Seven Day Urban Meditation Retreat Info Session and Q&A \nwith Leslie Booker and Dalila Bothwell \nThursday\, May 14th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 7:30pm ET \n \nIn June\, New York Insight is holding its second-ever non-residential retreat\, designed to help integrate practice into your daily life and life into your practice. \nWe often think of retreat as a chance to get away—traveling to a quiet meditation center in a serene natural setting. But for those of us who live in cities\, this can create a split: retreat happens there\, life happens here. Practicing together in the same city where we live\, work\, and navigate daily challenges creates a powerful opportunity: we can begin to carry the clarity and presence of retreat into the rhythms of ordinary life. \nDuring this live Q&A session\, teachers Leslie Booker and Dalila Bothwell will explain the format of this summer’s retreat and answer any questions you may have about embarking on a weeklong commitment to meditation practice. \nReserve your spot now for a special sneak peek into this weeklong retreat! \nAttendance at this event is encouraged but not required to register for June’s retreat. \nSave the date! The retreat itself will be held June 13-19\, 2026. \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: This Messy\, Gorgeous Love - A Weekend Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: This Messy\, Gorgeous Love – A Weekend Workshop \nwith devon and nico hase \nFriday\, May 15th\, 2026 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\nSaturday\, May 16th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET\nSunday\, May 17th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nPartnership might be one of the most challenging spiritual practices there is. We swing between losing ourselves to keep the peace and fighting to be right at any cost. \nThere’s a middle way. \nJoin married Buddhist teachers devon + nico hase for an intimate weekend exploring how to bring presence—instead of reactivity—to the beautiful\, messy work of conscious partnership. Drawing from their book This Messy\, Gorgeous Love and nearly twenty years together (including a three-year meditation retreat)\, they’ll guide you through the essential skills that transform relationships from battlegrounds into opportunities for awakening. \nWhat We’ll Explore \nDeep Listening: Moving beyond trying to fix or change your partner to truly hearing—and being heard. Learn to listen to yourself\, your partner\, and the wisdom that emerges between you. \nFinding Balance: Discovering your personal middle way between self-denial (losing yourself to please others) and self-indulgence (always needing to be right). Different people need different balances—and that’s profound\, not problematic. \nSkillful Conflict: Why “We shouldn’t be fighting” is a myth that causes more harm than good. Learn to work with your natural conflict style—whether you’re a Volcano\, Dodger\, or Diplomat—and discover that sometimes real patience means expressing anger. \nCultivating Joy: How awareness of impermanence transforms daily irritations into opportunities for appreciation. Practice mudita (sympathetic joy) and create rituals that nourish connection even during difficult times. \nFormat: This retreat combines dharma talks\, guided meditations\, journaling practices\, and partner exercises (adaptable for those attending solo). Expect a balance of individual reflection and shared exploration in a supportive community setting. \nPerfect for: Couples seeking to deepen their practice together\, individuals wanting to bring more consciousness to relationships\, and anyone curious about partnership as a path of awakening. No meditation experience required—just willingness to explore with honesty and kindness. \nAbout devon + nico \ndevon + nico hase are married Buddhist teachers helping couples face—and blossom in—the truth about long-term romance. nico lived in a monastery for six years before earning a PhD in counseling psychology and becoming an Insight Meditation teacher full time. devon has practiced intensively in the Insight and Vajrayana traditions of meditation and teaches at Insight Meditation Society\, Spirit Rock\, and more. They are co-authors of How Not to Be a Hot Mess and This Messy\, Gorgeous Love: A Buddhist Guide to Navigating Passion\, Purpose\, and Everyday Chaos. They live in Madison\, Wisconsin. \nWhat People Are Saying \n“devon and nico are deeply experienced practitioners\, with a strong dedication to their own meditation journey. They have immersed themselves for many years in long intensive practice\, and I highly recommend their teaching.” —Joseph Goldstein \n“Devon and nico teach with lightness\, humility\, and vulnerability. They’re down-to-earth and easy to relate to—yet full of wisdom.” —Sarah F.\, Student \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. This has been translated as un-satisfactoriness\, suffering\, dis-ease\, being out of whack—take your pick! We all know it when we are in it. In other words\, shit happens. In fact\, shit is always happening. We all see it all around us\, and we experience it in many ways. Every now and then\, in addition to moving through a world so prone to breaking our hearts\, our own more personal world might get turned upside down. You lose a loved one\, a job\, a home\, or your body as you once knew it. You take a devastating financial hit. You’re injured in such a way that your life is permanently changed. A relationship ends. Something or someone you’ve counted on your whole life is suddenly gone. Sometimes\, several losses or injuries hit at once or in close succession: when it rains\, it pours! It can feel like the world is falling apart. And in many ways\, it is. In those moments dukkha is not just a concept; we feel it in our bones\, we call out into the night. \nMost of us\, understandably\, are conditioned to push away suffering. To leap into making it better\, or simply not feeling it. To deny it\, to fix it\, to rage at it. I get it. I have those reflexes in me. Our culture can also exacerbate such aversion\, and sell us all kinds of things and services in these moments of desperation. Indeed\, the overwhelming sadness or discombobulation can be paralyzing. \nCompartmentalization\, to some degree\, can be a good survival tactic. To help us still get out of bed\, brush our teeth\, make a meal. And yet\, there is also a path to freedom that awaits in feeling into the dukkha fully and fearlessly. This is not about a dull acceptance\, or the indulgence of self-pity. It’s about the courage to face reality\, to acknowledge our humanity\, and to build from there\, with less delusions\, less attachments to false refuges\, less illusions of safety that lead us astray. \nThose familiar with the Buddhist tradition will have likely come across the teaching of the 12 links\, or nidanas\, which keep us going around and around in cycles of suffering. But in the early Buddhist texts\, there is another set of links\, the positive nidanas\, that set us on to what some have called the Spiral Path to liberation. The first of those links is\, unsurprisingly\, dukkha. Immediately after comes sraddha (faith on that which is reliable\, or confidence). Sraddha is crucial for the awakening process\, yet it depends on suffering in order to arise. How does that work? What does it mean for those of us who may be in the thick of a broken heart? Of life plans suddenly imploding? Of devastating losses? \nDrawing on Pema Chödrön’s cherished book and other resources\, I invite you to join me in a series of three classes to explore these themes. Let’s sit together in the rubble of our lives and see what happens when we don’t turn away. \nWhat the course includes: \n\na period of guided meditation specific to the course theme\na dharma talk\nQ&A and discussion\nsomatic exercises and occasional chanting/mantra practice\nRecording of the talk portion and any readings will be sent to registered participants\n\nOptional Mentoring: \nEvery registrant will also have the option to join the course with an individual mentoring session in each of the sections. \nOptional Retreats: \nAn online Retreat Day will be scheduled after Part 1 (optional)\, and a short retreat after Part 2. \nSliding Scale \nNYI is committed to making these courses easily available\, so we use a sliding scale. Each of the three sections is offered at a sliding scale as follows. \n\nBenefactor $420\nStandard $300\nSupported $180 (please email registration@nyimc.org about payment plan options or scholarships if this is still out of reach).\n\nPlease choose the level of contribution that is most suitable to your situation. \nEveryone who is registered will receive recordings of the talks and all materials\, even if they miss a session. \nPart 1: When Things Fall Apart (Feb 5 to Mar 12)\nPart 2: Picking Up The Pieces (Apr 9 to May 14)\nPart 3: Shattered And Whole (May 21 to Jun 25) \nSix Thursdays (online) in each series\n10:00 AM–12:00 PM EST / 9:00 AM–11:00 AM CST / 7:00 AM–9:00 AM PST / 3:00 PM–5:00 PM GMT \nRegistration – Part 3\nUse this form if you wish to register for Part 3: Shattered And Whole (May 21 to June 25; 6 sessions). SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, May 27th\, 2026 | 5:30pm – 6:30pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?

In our bodies and minds\, we experience the gap between what we care about and what we actually do. How are we working to transform disconnection\, anxiety\, and overwhelm? \nOver the course of this evening\, the Guiding Teachers of the New York Zen Center encourage us to nurture our capacity for intimacy\, connection\, and clarity—within ourselves and between one another. Senseis Chodo Campbell and Koshin Paley Ellison will introduce the basics of practice for everyday living. \nParticipants will also have an opportunity to experience what is nourishing about not turning away from discomfort and reflect on the day to day possibilities of showing up in each moment with presence\, wisdom\, and compassion. \nNote: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Mountains and Moonlight - Buddhist Wisdom in Classical Chinese Poetry
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Mountains and Moonlight – Buddhist Wisdom in Classical Chinese Poetry \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nFriday\, May 29th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWhen Buddhism entered China around the first century\, it entwined with Taoism and Confucianism\, together they weaved the fabrics of Chinese culture and the texture of everyday life. Along with a reverence for nature\, Buddhist insights of impermanence and equanimity flowed into Chinese poetry\, giving voice to renunciation and quiet joy. \nAcross centuries\, poets from all walks of life—court officials and recluses\, the successful and the dispossessed—turned to Buddhist wisdom to navigate uncertainty and flow of life. Some found grace after loss; others withdrew from fame and power\, discovering contentment in simplicity and the ordinary rhythms of life. Their poems speak not only of mountains and moonlight\, but of resilience\, equanimity\, and inner freedom—questions as alive today as they were a thousand years ago. \nWhat do these poems offer us today? How do we find peace and joy in a noisy world? Besides achievement and success\, what kind of life leads to contentment? In this evening of reflection\, we will read Buddhist-inspired poetry across dynasties and poets\, meditate\, and let insights arise. \nLin Wang Gordon\, who majored in East Asian Studies and a lifelong lover of classical Chinese poetry\, invites you to step into ancient China—to explore stillness\, simplicity and grace. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below to attend in-person.
