SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Seven Day Urban Meditation Retreat
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Seven Day Urban Meditation Retreat \nA non-residential retreat in New York City \nwith Leslie Booker and Dalila Bothwell \nSaturday\, June 13th – Friday\, June 19th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET\n(with options for weekend-only or weekday-only participation) \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nWe often think of retreat as a chance to get away—traveling to a quiet meditation center in a serene natural setting. But for those of us who live in cities\, this can create a split: retreat happens there\, life happens here. And as soon as we’re back in the noise and pace of the busy city\, all the calm and clarity we cultivated on retreat evaporates into thin air. \nThat’s why we’re excited to introduce a new kind of retreat; one that lets you practice and integrate into your daily life\, in real time. This is New York Insight’s Annual Urban Retreat.  \nRather than stepping away from life\, we’ll explore what it means to deepen our meditation practice right in the heart of it. Practicing together in the same city where we live\, work\, and navigate daily challenges creates a powerful opportunity: we can begin to carry the clarity and presence of retreat into the rhythms of ordinary life—not just afterward\, but right as it’s happening. \nThis year we’ll be remembering what the 3 Characteristics and the Four Noble Truths have to teach us: It’s Not Permanent\, it’s Not Perfect\, and it’s Not Personal! These truths are the foundation of liberating us from all that tethers us to our suffering. We’ll explore this with humor\, tenderness and a plan for integrating this into your everyday lives. \nWhile much of the retreat will be held in silence\, NY Insight’s Guiding Teacher Leslie Booker and NY Insight former Deputy Director Dalila Bothwell will be guiding these teachings through Dharma reflections\, Guided Meditations and time for dialogue. \nWe hope you can join us! Open to all levels of practitioners\, anyone may attend the whole week\, or join just for the weekend or the weekdays. \nHave questions about the retreat not covered in the FAQ below? Reach out to us at registration@nyimc.org. \nPlease note: The Urban Retreat will be offered like a traditional residential retreat\, with the financial support of the teachers coming from dana or the generosity of the students. Whatever you are able to offer to support Booker and Dalila’s efforts\, is greatly appreciated. \nFAQs about the Urban Meditation Retreat\nDo I have to be a Buddhist? \nNo. People of all backgrounds and traditions are welcome. We expect the group to be diverse in experience level\, age\, and identity. \nDo I need to have a meditation practice? \nNot necessarily\, though some prior experience helps. The retreat begins gently and becomes more in-depth as the week unfolds. If you’re new to meditation\, we recommend starting with the weekend and seeing how it feels—you can always extend your retreat. Our teachers will check in with you throughout and are always available to support you. \nDo we sleep at the meditation center? \nNo. Each evening you’ll head home to rest\, eat dinner\, and return the next morning for the next day of practice. \nWhat do we do for meals? \nWe will share lunch together in community. You can bring food from home or step out to pick something up nearby. \nCan I join the retreat online? \nYes. The entire retreat will also be offered via Zoom\, so you’re welcome to participate from the comfort of your own home. Whether you’re across the city or in another part of the world\, you’ll be able to fully join the retreat community and follow the daily schedule remotely. \nWhat if I can’t afford the full price? \nPart of NYI’s core mission is to share the Buddha’s teachings with all who are interested\, regardless of their ability to pay. Our weeklong retreat is designed to be much more accessible than residential retreats\, but if you need it\, we have options like a payment plan that helps participants with the cost of the retreat. Please contact us at registration@nyimc.org for more information. \nWhat if I can’t take a full week off? \nA full week of meditation with expert and highly-trained teachers is a rare and valuable opportunity—but we’re New Yorkers too and know how hard it can be to take a week off to do a retreat. That’s why we’ve made it possible to join just for the weekend (or just the weekdays)\, so you can still benefit from retreat practice even with a busy schedule. \nHow much do we need to unplug from our devices during the retreat? \nParticipants are encouraged to fully unplug from their email and mobile devices during the hours of the retreat and maintain the atmosphere of retreat practice when returning home each night. \nWhat is dana? \nDana is the Pali word that means “generosity” or “the thing that is given”. This has been a foundational teaching of this Buddhist tradition for over 2600 years\, and is said to be the quality of the heart that needed to be established\, in order to fully understand the rest of the teachings. This 2600 year old tradition is rooted in the confidence that the community will support the ongoing offering of the teachings. \nIn keeping with the expression of this tradition in the West\, Booker and Dalila will only receive financial support for this retreat through the generosity of the community. There will be an opportunity to offer contributions to the teachers and to NYI at the end of your retreat\, as well as a few weeks after. Your donations help the teachers lead a life devoted to sharing these teachings\, and to support the existence of an urban oasis in New York City. \nFeedback from Last Year’s Participants:\n“It’s hard to put into words what this retreat meant to me. I’m still feeling the effects months later.” \n“I’ve wanted to attend a meditation retreat for years\, but haven’t found any that are financially or logistically feasible for me. The non-residential format and rates made this retreat accessible.” \n“I signed up because attending a residential retreat isn’t accessible to me right now. But I quickly realized how uniquely beneficial the non-residential format was\, especially in reflecting on the impact of meditation practice in day-to-day life. My personal practice and sense of community were immeasurably deepened.” \n“Booker and Dalila were amazing teachers. Their personal anecdotes brought concepts to life in a really helpful way.” \n“Thank you for this opportunity. It was deeply profound.” \n“I loved being able to go home each evening and bring the day’s practice into real-life moments with my partner and children.” \nPayment Plans Available\nYou can register for any level of participation in this retreat (full week\, weekend\, or weekdays\, in-person or online) using a 3-month payment plan. To set up your plan\, simply make your first installment payment here. Within a few days\, you will receive confirmation of your registration\, and you will be automatically charged for the second and third installments 30 and 60 days after your first payment. If you have any questions\, please contact us at registration@nyimc.org. \nIn-Person Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: This Messy\, Gorgeous Love - A Weekend Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: This Messy\, Gorgeous Love – A Weekend Workshop \nwith devon and nico hase \nFriday\, May 15th\, 2026 | 7:00pm – 8:30pm ET\nSaturday\, May 16th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET\nSunday\, May 17th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nPartnership might be one of the most challenging spiritual practices there is. We swing between losing ourselves to keep the peace and fighting to be right at any cost. \nThere’s a middle way. \nJoin married Buddhist teachers devon + nico hase for an intimate weekend exploring how to bring presence—instead of reactivity—to the beautiful\, messy work of conscious partnership. Drawing from their book This Messy\, Gorgeous Love and nearly twenty years together (including a three-year meditation retreat)\, they’ll guide you through the essential skills that transform relationships from battlegrounds into opportunities for awakening. \nWhat We’ll Explore \nDeep Listening: Moving beyond trying to fix or change your partner to truly hearing—and being heard. Learn to listen to yourself\, your partner\, and the wisdom that emerges between you. \nFinding Balance: Discovering your personal middle way between self-denial (losing yourself to please others) and self-indulgence (always needing to be right). Different people need different balances—and that’s profound\, not problematic. \nSkillful Conflict: Why “We shouldn’t be fighting” is a myth that causes more harm than good. Learn to work with your natural conflict style—whether you’re a Volcano\, Dodger\, or Diplomat—and discover that sometimes real patience means expressing anger. \nCultivating Joy: How awareness of impermanence transforms daily irritations into opportunities for appreciation. Practice mudita (sympathetic joy) and create rituals that nourish connection even during difficult times. \nFormat: This retreat combines dharma talks\, guided meditations\, journaling practices\, and partner exercises (adaptable for those attending solo). Expect a balance of individual reflection and shared exploration in a supportive community setting. \nPerfect for: Couples seeking to deepen their practice together\, individuals wanting to bring more consciousness to relationships\, and anyone curious about partnership as a path of awakening. No meditation experience required—just willingness to explore with honesty and kindness. \nAbout devon + nico \ndevon + nico hase are married Buddhist teachers helping couples face—and blossom in—the truth about long-term romance. nico lived in a monastery for six years before earning a PhD in counseling psychology and becoming an Insight Meditation teacher full time. devon has practiced intensively in the Insight and Vajrayana traditions of meditation and teaches at Insight Meditation Society\, Spirit Rock\, and more. They are co-authors of How Not to Be a Hot Mess and This Messy\, Gorgeous Love: A Buddhist Guide to Navigating Passion\, Purpose\, and Everyday Chaos. They live in Madison\, Wisconsin. \nWhat People Are Saying \n“devon and nico are deeply experienced practitioners\, with a strong dedication to their own meditation journey. They have immersed themselves for many years in long intensive practice\, and I highly recommend their teaching.” —Joseph Goldstein \n“Devon and nico teach with lightness\, humility\, and vulnerability. They’re down-to-earth and easy to relate to—yet full of wisdom.” —Sarah F.\, Student \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below for in-person participation. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Work Sex Money Dharma - Full Weekend Retreat + Online Series
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Work Sex Money Dharma – Full Weekend Retreat + Online Series \nwith Martin Aylward \nHybrid Weekend Retreat: Saturday and Sunday\, March 14-15\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET\nOptional Online Follow-Up Sessions: Tuesday – Thursday\, March 17-19\, 2026 | 12:00pm – 1:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAcross many wisdom traditions\, spiritual practice has often followed two broad paths. One emphasizes stepping away from the entanglements of ordinary life in pursuit of clarity and awakening. Another invites us to engage life fully and use its challenges\, desires\, and responsibilities as the ground of practice. \nWork\, sex\, and money sit at the center of that tension. These domains shape how we relate to others\, how we organize our time and energy\, and how we understand intimacy\, ambition\, and security. They are also powerful places where our habits of mind\, fears\, and desires become visible. \nIn this immersive weekend retreat\, meditation teacher Martin Aylward invites participants to bring mindful attention to these deeply human themes. Through meditation\, reflection\, and relational dialogue exercises sometimes described as “meditation out loud\,” we will explore how our conditioning around work\, intimacy\, and material security shapes the way we live and relate to others. \nOver the course of the retreat\, each theme will be explored in depth. Participants will examine their relationship to work and livelihood\, intimacy and sexuality\, wealth and security\, and how these areas intersect with their values and spiritual path. \nOptional online follow-up sessions during the week offer an opportunity to reconnect\, share reflections\, and continue integrating insights into everyday roles and relationships. \nAll sessions will be recorded and available for rewatching or future reference. \nIn-Person Registration:\nNote: The Tuesday-Thursday follow-up sessions are online-only\, even if you attend the weekend retreat in person. \nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\n \nOnline Registration:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Finding Care in the Overwhelm - Hope as a Counterculture Practice (Weekend Retreat)
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Finding Care in the Overwhelm – Hope as a Counterculture Practice (Weekend Retreat) \nwith Leslie Booker and Dara Silverman \nSaturday and Sunday\, November 22nd-23rd\, 2025 | 10:00am – 4:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nAs transformative justice leaders Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes have taught us\, hope is a discipline and a practice that inspires us to live a whole and integrated life. \nIn this two-day non-residential retreat\, we’ll explore care for self and others as a way through in a tumultuous world\, and to cultivate love without spiritually bypassing. To find a way to connect to our own sense of well-being and joy while remaining present to injustice and violence. We’ll explore how to be in community with others exploring the same questions. \nJoin long-time friends and collaborators Booker and Dara as they weave together somatic (body-based) practices and the heart practices of the Buddha’s Brahmaviharas; expressions of loving-kindness\, compassion\, empathetic joy\, and equanimity. Together\, we’ll cultivate these capacities and deepen our understanding of how to embody hope\, love\, and presence. \nAs a group\, we’ll be together in the questions: \n\nHow can we hold hope without bypassing the realities of injustice and hardship?\nHow do we stay rooted in joy and well-being while staying fully present to the world around us?\nHow can meditation and somatic practice support our engagement with the world (rather than provide an escape?)\n\nIs this for me? If you are interested in learning more about your body\, responses under pressure and capacity to be in relationship with other people – this is for you. If you are an organizer\, consultant\, trainer\, coach or activist\, this is a place for you to deepen and build your commitment to a just world. This retreat is a place to deepen in your somatic awareness\, embodied practice and learnings. \nEveryone is welcome to participate\, regardless of experience with meditation or body-based practices. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: The Thinning of the Self - Exploring and Practicing Anattā (Not-Self)
DESCRIPTION:Online: The Thinning of the Self – Exploring and Practicing Anattā (Not-Self) \nwith Donald Rothberg \nSaturday\, August 20th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \n \n\n  \nThe teaching of anattā (“not-self”) points to one of the three fundamental areas of liberating insight taught by the Buddha\, along with the teachings on anicca (impermanence) and on dukkha (usually translated as “suffering”). Yet anattā can be very challenging and confusing for contemporary practitioners. Is there “no self” (sometimes anattā is translated as “no self”)? How do we understand our senses of individuality\, identity\, ancestry and ethnicity\, and vocation? How do we address our own personal experiences of woundedness\, trauma\, and oppression? Are these all simply to be “transcended”? How is a sense of self\, as the Buddha taught\, in many ways important for spiritual development\, and how is working with our own individual conditioning\, whether psychological or social in origin\, central to our liberation? How do we integrate attending to such conditioning with opening as well beyond the habitual sense of self? \nIn this daylong\, we will explore these vital questions primarily in a practical way. Using the metaphors of “thinning the self” and working with a “thick” sense of self\, we will cover three aspects of practice: (1) cultivating\, in several ways\, the “thinning” of the self\, both in meditation and in everyday life\, including working with the Five Skandhas or “aggregates” of experience (a main way that the Buddha taught anattā); (2) tracking and working with different manifestations of a “thick” sense of self\, both as appearing in experience and as hidden to awareness; and (3) opening beyond a fixed sense of self\, as awareness\, compassion\, and responsiveness deepen. \nDonald Rothberg will also be giving an evening talk on Buddhist Wisdom Perspectives and the Transformation of Racism on Friday\, August 19th\, 2022 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm ET. SUMMARY:Online: Holding Yourself Dear - The Buddha's Therapy for Loving Yourself
DESCRIPTION:Online: Holding Yourself Dear – The Buddha’s Therapy for Loving Yourself \nwith Melissa McKay \nSaturday\, July 16th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n“I teach one thing and one thing only\, stress and the end of stress\,” said the Buddha. \nAnd the entirety of the Buddhist path is for this purpose – alleviating or totally eradicating stress. Meditation\, compassion\, generosity and ethical practices all serve this purpose. \nThe Buddha’s psychology is aligned with the natural law of cause and effect. He taught his followers how to sow causes and conditions that could alleviate stress naturally. \nHe emphasized that those who love and hold themselves dear would harm no one. When we don’t harm others we grow in confidence and feel at ease in any situation. This seemingly indirect way of building our self esteem and loving ourselves is applicable in all aspects of life. \nDuring this program we will explore the therapeutic tools of the Buddha and discuss ways of applying it to our life. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nClick HERE to open a new browser for an easier process.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:Online: Meditating With Space
DESCRIPTION:Online: Meditating With Space \nwith Bodhipaksa \nSaturday and Sunday\, July 9th-10th\, 2022 | 9:30am – 1:00pm ET \nUsually our meditation practice happens “in here” — within the covering of skin that separates “us” from what is “not us.” But certain less well-known meditations in the Buddhist tradition involve an awareness of the space element\, and space knows no boundaries. \nWhen we practice being mindful of space\, several things happen. First\, the mind itself reveals itself to be spacious; rather than our awareness being a small container\, it turns out that it’s vast and open. Second\, within this open space\, our thoughts slow down\, and any thinking that remains becomes less compelling\, so that thoughts arise and pass away without disturbing our mindfulness. Third\, as we maintain an awareness of space\, the sense of there being a boundary between “in here” and “out there” can cease to have any meaning\, and our sense of self can radically change; the mind is calm and receptive\, and the heart open\, at ease\, and boundless. \nThis may sound advanced\, but over the course of this two-morning workshop\, Bodhipaksa will guide us step-by-step through a series of simple meditations that fundamentally change our sense of who (and where) we are. SUMMARY:Transforming the Judgmental Mind: A NYI Weekend Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Transforming the Judgmental Mind: A NYI Weekend Retreat\n \nwith Donald Rothberg\n \nSaturday\, November 16th\, 2019 | 9:00am – 5:00pm\nSunday\, November 17th\, 2019 | 9:00am – 4:00pm\n \n\n \nJudgments of a reactive nature are very strong in most of our lives and in the dominant culture we live in. They can distort our perceptions\, make relationships difficult\, and undermine our work in the world. \nIn this retreat\, we will explore such judgments (and their difference from non-reactive discernment) and how to transform them. We will cultivate mindfulness of judgments; inquiry into the deep roots of judgments; and heart practices such as lovingkindness\, forgiveness\, and compassion. We will also explore the somatic and social dimensions of judgments–how we internalize dominant views (e.g.\, of race\, gender\, etc.). \nThese tools will help us to preserve the intelligence and energy often found in judgments\, using them for discernment and compassionate action\, while working through judgments’ destructive\, automatic\, and compulsive aspects. \nThe retreat will combine silent meditation practice\, guided meditations\, short talks\, and discussion. \nDonald Rothberg will also give an evening talk on the Seven Stages of the Spiritual Journey on Friday\, November 15th from 7-9pm.
