SUMMARY:What Does It Mean to Heal? Why Buddhism and Psychotherapy Need Each Other
DESCRIPTION:What Does It Mean to Heal? Why Buddhism and Psychotherapy Need Each Other \nwith Mark Epstein\, MD \nTuesday\, December 4th\, 2018 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm \nThis program has reached capacity and the waiting list is closed.\nJoin Buddhist psychiatrist and author Mark Epstein for a discussion about the relationship of Buddhism and psychotherapy and how each tradition has something important to learn from the other. \nIn a series of books written over the past 25 years\, beginning with Thoughts without a Thinker and ending most recently with Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself\, Epstein has explored the relevance of Buddhist thought for psychotherapy. But he is also increasingly aware of how much Buddhism can learn from contemporary therapeutic traditions. \nMany Westerners\, in their embrace of mindfulness\, hope and expect that mindfulness will heal them. But there is a danger of ‘spiritual bypass’ in this\, a tendency to use meditation to ignore personal issues rather than treating them as worthy subjects of meditative exploration. \nThis evening’s conversation will not only address how an immersion in Buddhism can affect one’s approach to therapy\, but how an appreciation of therapy can enhance one’s understanding of Buddhism. \nThe registration fee includes teacher support. If you wish to give more in addition to the registration fee\, the total (registration fees and additional contributions) will be shared between NYI and the teacher(s). \nNote About Registration:\nNew York Insight Meditation Center is offering a new structure for registration. Members receive 15% off of the Sustaining Rate. \nNYI is committed to ensuring that our programs are available to all\, regardless of ability to pay. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. No financial assistance application is needed when registering for a program. \nWe offer new sliding scale fees\, and ask that you choose the highest fee you are able to afford based on your financial means. The Sustaining rate represents the actual program operating cost. If you can afford this level or higher\, you assist our efforts to offer reduced rates and support ongoing financial assistance. If you are unable to pay the Base Fee\, you can set up a payment plan or let us know how much you are able to pay at this time by emailing registration@nyimc.org. \nFor more information about our generosity policy and the sliding scale fee structure\, please click here. \n

SUMMARY:Tricycle Movie Night at NY Insight: In Between Mountains and Oceans
DESCRIPTION:Tricycle Movie Night at NY Insight: In Between Mountains and Oceans\n \nFriday\, December 7th\, 2018 | 6:00pm-8:30pm\n \nEvery 20 years\, locals tear down Ise Jingu\, one of the most important Shinto shrine complexes in Mie Prefecture\, Japan\, only to rebuild it entirely from scratch. Explore this 1\,300-year-old ritual in Tricycle’s and New York Insight’s screening of In Between Mountains and Oceans (Umi Yama Aida) directed by acclaimed Japanese photographer Masaaki Miyazawa. \nCaptivated and inspired by the sacred relationship between humans and nature in the Shikinen Sengu ceremony\, Miyazawa takes viewers on a meditative journey through Japan’s cypress forests\, mountains\, and coasts\, where coexisting with the natural world is part of enduring Buddhist environmentalism. \nFor over a millennium\, the tradition of rebuilding religious structures has played an important role in reconnecting this community to their ancestral and spiritual roots as well as transmitting Japan’s architectural and cultural heritage to the next generation. \nThe film screening will be followed by a group discussion. \nThe film screening will be followed by a group discussion led by Qalvy Grainzvolt\, an ordained Shinnyo–en Buddhist priest and lead meditation guide at the Shinnyo Center for Meditation and Well-being in New York City. \nPopcorn and refreshments will be provided. Doors open at 6pm. Runtime 79 minutes. \nTricycle: The Buddhist Review is a print and digital magazine dedicated to making Buddhist teachings and practices broadly available. Tricycle also offers monthly spiritual films online\, podcasts with leading Buddhist voices\, weekly dharma talk videos\, and a variety of online courses with expert teachers. \n \nRegistration:\n \n
