SUMMARY:Yom Kippur: A Day of Silence and Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Yom Kippur: A Day of Silence and Reflection \nwith Jon Aaron\, Elaine Retholtz and Sandra Weinberg \nWednesday\, October 9th\, 2019 | 10:00am – 7:00pm \nYom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement\, a day when\, as a community\, Jews are asked to reflect on their actions of the past year and to ask for atonement for any actions that were unskillful. In support of this day\, NYI hosts a day of silence and reflection. \nThere will be meditations focused on the idea of right action\, the difference between guilt and remorse\, the laws of karma\, forgiveness\, and lovingkindness. There will also be an opportunity for mindful discussion on the Buddhist perspective on atonement. All are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast. \nDoors open at 9:30am. Pre-registration is required. \nThis daylong retreat is a dana (donation) based event. If you do not handle money that day for religious reasons\, you can give donations before the event or until 10/10 at 11:55pm EST. \nRegistration:

SUMMARY:Merging Disciplines: Meditation and Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Merging Disciplines: Meditation and Psychotherapy\n \nWith Mark Epstein\, MD\n \nWednesday\, October 16th\, 2019 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm\n \n\n \nJoin Buddhist psychiatrist and author Mark Epstein for a discussion about the relationship of Buddhism and psychotherapy and how each tradition has something important to learn from the other. \nIn a series of books written over the past 25 years\, beginning with Thoughts without a Thinker and ending most recently with Advice Not Given: A Guide to Getting Over Yourself\, Epstein has explored the relevance of Buddhist thought for psychotherapy. But he is also increasingly aware of how much Buddhism can learn from contemporary therapeutic traditions. \nMany Westerners\, in their embrace of mindfulness\, hope and expect that mindfulness will heal them. But there is a danger of ‘spiritual bypass’ in this\, a tendency to use meditation to ignore personal issues rather than treating them as worthy subjects of meditative exploration. \nThis evening’s conversation will not only address how an immersion in Buddhism can affect one’s approach to therapy\, but how an appreciation of therapy can enhance one’s understanding of Buddhism. \nRegistration:\n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. Members of our Circle of Friends are eligible to receive 20% off of the Sustaining Rate via a code provided in the email confirming membership\, which you can enter after clicking the Sustaining Level registration. \n*Benefactor Level: Supports NYI’s ability to offer the Subsidized Base. \n**Sustaining Level: This level reflects the actual costs to support this program.
