DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Transforming Confusion Into Wisdom – Buddhist Tantra & The 5 Wisdom Energies\n \nwith David Nichtern\n \nSunday\, June 1st\, 2025 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\n \nJoin renowned\, multiple Emmy-winning and Grammy-nominated musician\, meditation teacher\, and author David Nichtern for a transformative daylong workshop on Buddhist Tantra. \nThese powerful teachings are designed to transmute confusion and mental afflictions into wisdom. Through the lens of tantra\, we learn to engage directly with the raw energies of our emotions—anger\, desire\, fear—and transform them into sources of insight\, compassion\, and clarity. \nAt the heart of tantric practice are the teachings known as the Five Wisdom Energies\, which embody the enlightened qualities that arise when we skillfully navigate and integrate our emotional experiences. \nThese teachings describe how our emotional and psychological patterns—when met with awareness—can reveal deep\, awakened qualities of the mind. Each energy has both positive and counter-productive qualities\, and seeing and understanding them helps us recognize that our messy\, emotional lives are not obstacles to awakening—they’re actually part of the path. \nWhether you’re new to meditation or a longtime practitioner\, everyone is welcome to join us.\nThe day will feature meditation instruction and practice\, lectures\, and plenty of time for discussion. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: From Overthinking to Clarity – A Mindful Approach to Thought\n \nwith Margrit Pittman-Polletta\n \nTuesdays\, June 3rd – 24th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n \n\nIn a world of constant information\, stress\, and uncertainty\, our thinking can shape our emotions\, our actions\, and even our well-being. 2600 years ago\, the Buddha taught that whatever we frequently think and ponder upon becomes the inclination of our minds. Without awareness\, we may find ourselves caught in habitual thought patterns that fuel anxiety\, self-doubt\, or disconnection. \nThis 4-week course offers practical tools to transform your relationship with thinking—not by stopping it\, but by meeting it with mindfulness\, curiosity\, and compassion. \nThrough guided meditation\, movement\, and reflective exercises\, you’ll explore how habitual thought patterns influence your perception of yourself and the world\, ways to work with thoughts skillfully using mindfulness\, the Buddha’s teaching of the Two Kinds of Thinking (Dvedhavitakka Sutta) and non-self or anatta\, and practical strategies to cultivate wisdom\, ease\, and non-attachment to thinking. \nEach session includes meditation\, discussion\, and some kind of movement\, relational practice or creative exercise to engage the thinking mind in fresh and insightful ways. \nJoin us to develop a more mindful and compassionate relationship with your thoughts—so you can respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and ease. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness and the Middle Way - Cultivating an Authentic Dharma
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness and the Middle Way – Cultivating an Authentic Dharma \nwith Dave Smith and Stephen Batchelor \nTuesdays\, June 3rd – June 24th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET \n  \nMany people experience the benefits of a regular meditation practice\, but what does it truly mean to “wake up”? And how do we integrate these teachings into our daily lives—especially in a time of turmoil and uncertainty? \nThe Eightfold Path—central to the Buddha’s teachings—offers a structured yet flexible guide for cultivating wisdom\, ethical living\, and meditative awareness in a way that is both practical and transformative. \nIn this four-week course\, teacher Dave Smith will lead live sessions exploring how the Eightfold Path can provide clarity and direction in our practice today. To enrich our inquiry\, each week will also include exclusive pre-recorded video reflections by renowned teacher and author Stephen Batchelor\, created specifically for this program. \nDrawing from early Buddhist texts and contemporary interpretations\, we’ll examine how these teachings can be reimagined for a secular age and made relevant to our everyday experience. Through study\, discussion\, and guided reflection\, we will consider what it means to engage with the Dharma in a way that is both deeply personal and connected to the world around us. \nWhat does a secular Eightfold Path look like in practice? How can it offer insight and support in our daily lives? Together\, we’ll honor these ancient teachings while exploring a path that feels authentic and accessible. \nThis program is open to all—no prior study or experience required. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, June 4th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from June 4th through June 25. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series.

SUMMARY:Online: A Verified Kind of Faith - Buddhism & Addiction Recovery
DESCRIPTION:Online: A Verified Kind of Faith – Buddhism & Addiction Recovery \nwith Walt Opie \nThursday\, June 5th\, 2025 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nFor many of us in recovery from addiction\, the word “faith” can conjure up memories of being forced to participate in organized religion or it can feel related to a so-called “higher power.” \nWhen Buddhist teachings refer to faith\, it’s different. The Buddha himself discouraged people from acting out of blind faith. Instead\, Buddhism describes three ways that faith\, or confidence\, can manifest or build over time\, including: bright faith\, verified faith\, and unshakeable faith. \nAccording to the well-known teacher Gil Fronsdal\, faith in Buddhism is not a belief system but a faculty or a capacity we have that we can develop further. In fact\, faith\, just like recovery\, can be a kind of empowerment. With support from the teachings and others on similar journeys\, we learn how to trust our inner wisdom. We gain a new kind of inner confidence. \nDuring this program\, we will explore the three different types of faith\, as well as how faith in the Buddhist teachings and practices can help keep us on the path of recovery. There will be guided meditation\, a dharma talk\, and time for sharing and discussion. \nPlease join us for this special evening of learning to strengthen our inner resources through the Buddhist teachings. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, June 11th\, 2025 | 5:15pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n  \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body?

SUMMARY:Online: Resting in the Middle of the Full Catastrophe
DESCRIPTION:Online: Resting in the Middle of the Full Catastrophe\n \nwith Yong Oh\n \nThursday\, June 12th\, 2025 | 7:00pm – 9:00pm ET\n \n\n \nThere’s so much to do. There’s never enough time. \nYet\, the demands of life only seem to grow amidst the unfolding of our lives and our world\, personally and collectively. Is there permission to rest our weary bodies and distressed nervous systems? How can we rest\, resource\, and find refuge? \nOver the course of this evening event\, we will explore how rest can permeate our spiritual life and practice in such a way that resting itself becomes a profound and essential doorway on the path of awakening. Drawing from the Buddhist tradition\, we’ll examine how this practice is essential and radical for the times we live in. \nThrough a dharma talk\, practice\, and discussion\, we will reflect on rest as practice and practice as rest\, and examine how both are deeply personal and connected to the world around us. \nJoin guest teacher Yong Oh for a special evening of exploring rest in the middle of catastrophe and learning how to move forward with a wise and compassionate heart. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \n \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. Volunteering allows you to participate in our programs at no cost. To inquire about volunteering opportunities\, please fill out our inquiry form\, and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

DESCRIPTION:Online: You Are the Path – Living a Good Life in Bad Times\n \nwith Tracy Cochran\n \nSaturday\, June 14th\, 2025 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \nOnline via Zoom \n \nLife is always hard\, but these times feel especially uncertain and the stakes feel very high. \nHow can we live a truly good life now? What should we do and how should we do it? Fortunately\, the Buddha offers us a guide rope. The Eightfold path of the Buddha braids together practices for body\, heart\, and mind. \nConfused about how to live? The Buddha offers us a way into our own deepest wisdom. Lost in thought or full of difficult feelings? Focus on what you are doing. Following this guide rope\, our own lives become a way of awakening. \nOver the course of this half-day retreat\, we’ll explore the whole of the path with a special emphasis on finding our own deepest insights and experiences. Together we’ll combine meditation with mindful writing exercises designed to help us find our own way. Special emphasis will be given to “beginning the path\,” and our own moments of clarity and experiments in living. \nWith time for meditation and discussion\, we’ll learn how to take root in our own wisdom and make our actual lives our path. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Jon Aaron \n\nOnline Course: Mondays\, June 16  – August 4\, 2025 | 12:00 – 2:30pm ET\nOnline Daylong: Saturday\, July 19\, 2025 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 45-60 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 46 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates \nFree Orientation: Monday\, June 2\, 2025 from 12:00 – 2:30pm ET\nOnline Course: Mondays\, June 16  – August 4\, 2025 from 12:00 – 2:30pm ET\nOnline Daylong: Saturday\, July 19 from 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $715 – Base $420 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. Email registration@nyimc.org for more info. \nParticipants may register after the orientation for this class takes place\, but must still view a recorded orientation\, complete the pre-class questionnaire and arrange a pre-class interview with the teacher. Once you have registered\, the teacher will contact you to make these arrangements. \nRegister for the MBSR Course:\nYour registration for the course includes your RSVP to the orientation.
