SUMMARY:In-Person: Interconnectedness - Art Exhibition and Reception
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Interconnectedness – Art Exhibition and Reception \nwith works by Lydia Dona\, Nicole Parcher\, and Stephen Pusey \nReception: Saturday\, January 3rd\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 4:00pm ET\nExhibition open until January 31st\, 2026\, whenever NY Insight is open. \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nNew York Insight Meditation Center is pleased to announce Interconnectedness\, an exhibition of fourteen works by Lydia Dona\, Nicole Parcher\, and Stephen Pusey—three brilliant artists\, each of whom reenvisions abstraction in dynamic and exceptional ways. Ludic\, liquid\, intense\, animated\, employing what Félix Guattari would call “ensemble[s] of lines of alterity\,” these innovative artworks offer “virtual possibilities\, unprecedented new becoming.” \nEmphasizing the physical act of painting and drawing\, where the aleatory and improvisatory\, the volatile and energetic\, and a massive “lexicon” of marks (dabs\, drips\, splashes\, smears\, scribbles\, etc.) converge\, these works not only singularly express deep and profound feeling but a generous spirit of knowing and not-knowing\, of the synergy between thoughts and bodily actions\, evoking how mind influences body\, body influences mind\, where both dissolve\, forming vast webs\, networks\, rhizomes\, tapestries\, where everything—actions\, beings\, and the universe—are interdependent. All the artists featured in Interconnectedness live and work in New York City. Interconnectedness was curated by John Madera. \nClick HERE for Madera’s essay about the artwork in the show. A price list for the artwork in the show is available at NY Insight and upon request. \nA reception for Interconnectedness will occur on January 3\, 2026: 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. It will feature a conversation with the artists moderated by Madera. Updates about the exhibit may be found on this site. The artwork may be viewed until January 31st\, 2026\, whenever NY Insight is open. \nInquiries about the works in the show may be sent to John Madera. \nReception RSVP:\nIf you are planning on attending the reception on Saturday\, January 3\, please RSVP using the form below. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, January 7th\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from January 7th through January 28th. Looking for more tai chi? Another series will run from February 4th through February 25th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person: Sacred Earth Sangha - Activism on the Path
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Sacred Earth Sangha—Activism on the Path \nThursday\, March 19th\, 2026 | 6:30pm-8:30pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, on the 12th Floor \nBefore we head back outdoors in a few weeks\, we’ll gather once more at the Center to reconnect with the original intention of NYI’s Sacred Earth Sangha: a community grounded in deep practice and conscious engagement with the intertwined climate and ecological crises\, along with the social justice issues they touch. While our emphasis in recent times has been contemplative nature practice\, our commitment has always been to meet these urgent realities with wisdom\, compassion\, and courage. \nAt this gathering\, led by Maho Kawachi and Ben Dillon\, Tom Carling\, a founder of SES\, will offer reflections and guide a conversation on the intersection of activism and Dharma practice\, and on the role of socially engaged Buddhism in our time. We hope you’ll join us. \nIn April\, SES will resume gathering in the city’s green spaces\, where we practice attuning to the living earth—trees\, rivers\, birds\, soil—even in the midst of the urban landscape. These walks invite intimacy with the natural world\, helping us cultivate presence\, gratitude\, and wonder in everyday surroundings. \nSpace is limited\, so please register to reserve your spot. \nAll are welcome. No previous meditation experience is required. \nRegistration\nIf you are having trouble completing your RSVP or donation\, please CLICK HERE to open it in a new browser. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: The Joy of the Dhamma - A Special Event with Bhante Buddharakkhita
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: The Joy of the Dhamma – A Special Event with Bhante Buddharakkhita \nwith Bhante Buddharakkhita and Leslie Booker \nCo-Sponsored by Tricycle: The Buddhist Review \nSaturday\, January 10th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 5:00pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nNew York Insight\, in collaboration with Tricycle: The Buddhist Review\, is honored to welcome Bhante Buddharakkhita for a special daylong program exploring The Joy of the Dhamma. \nJoin us for a rare opportunity to practice with a senior monastic teacher whose life and teaching embody the dharma in both formal meditation and community life\, integrating inner practice with ethical action\, service\, and collective care. \nThe day will begin with a morning of guided practice and teaching from Bhante\, focused on joy as an essential and cultivated quality of the path. Participants will explore how joy functions within Buddhist practice as a source of energy\, clarity\, and continuity\, and how it can be intentionally cultivated to support wisdom\, compassion\, and resilience in daily life. Drawing on meditative experience and classical dharma teachings\, Bhante will examine how joy arises through mindful engagement with the heart-mind and the world\, and how it helps sustain practice over time. \nIn the afternoon\, Bhante will reflect on nearly twenty years of the Uganda Buddhist Centre\, which he founded and serves as abbot\, offering insight into what the dharma looks like when expressed through long-term commitment\, community building\, and service in the world. He will then be joined in conversation by Leslie Booker\, Guiding Teacher at New York Insight and the Centre’s first international guest\, for a dialogue on practice\, joy\, and the role of community in sustaining our spiritual path. \nParticipants will explore joy as a cultivated and supportive aspect of Buddhist practice\, gain insight into how the dharma is lived beyond formal meditation\, and reflect on what it means to sustain practice through service\, community\, and long-term commitment. \nWe hope you can join us for this day of practice\, reflection\, and conversation. All are welcome! \n\nThis program is brought to you by New York Insight Meditation Center and Tricycle: The Buddhist Review \nNote: This program will be recorded. SUMMARY:In-Person: Soul-Centric Mid-Life - A Five-Month Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Soul-Centric Mid-Life – A Five-Month Course \nwith Lin Wang Gordon \nFive Saturdays: January 10th\, February 7th\, March 7th\, April 4th\, and May 2nd\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor\n*Note: The first session of this class will take place at Balance Arts Center\, 151 W. 30th St\, 3rd Floor. \n \nAre you in your 40s and 50s and thinking about the second half of your life? \nEvery life stage brings its own gifts. Each life stage has its own purpose in our development as a whole being. In every season of our life\, there are changes and growth\, letting go and rebirth. Midlife could bring us menopause\, greying hair\, childcare\, eldercare\, an empty nest\, loss of loved ones\, second careers\, and relationship changes..but we also have more life experiences and skills than we had in our younger years. Perhaps we also have more time and resources to find joy and explore our passions. While our culture likes to associate this time in our life with turmoil and crisis\, it could also be a great time for inner growth\, clarity\, and purpose. \nIn this 5-month course\, we will use inquiries\, experiential exercises\, and meditation practice to explore our underlying emotions around midlife issues. What are our fears\, doubts\, agitation\, hopes\, and dreams? How do we make peace with the life we have led so far? How do we live a fulfilling life with the time we have left? As we have learned from our life experiences so far\, have we started to live in accordance with our inner values and deepest desires? How do we let go of our former selves and keep evolving? This class is for exploring questions rather than having answers. It is based on Buddhist philosophy to help us transform our mind in approaching these inquiries. It is highly interactive and experiential in nature – we will spend much time in group work and less time in formal sitting practice. Central to this course is building a community among people in the midlife stage. \nThis is an in-person course and will meet monthly on a Saturday for half a day. We will meditate\, journal\, form buddy groups\, and build community through sharing\, dialogues\, and group work. \nThe class creates a sacred and supportive container to connect with others at the same life stage. Lin is a gifted teacher and guided us through a journey of facing mid-life with gratitude\, honesty\, and introspection. I came out of the class with a more expansive and empowered perspective on this unique stage of life. \n– A participant from Soul-Centric Mid-Life\, 2023 \nRegistration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: How to Thrive in Hard Times
DESCRIPTION:Online: How to Thrive in Hard Times \nwith Stephen Fulder \nSunday\, January 11th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nWe are faced with ever more challenging daily life situations. There is growing conflict and insecurity at the personal\, political\, social and planetary levels. We are sensitive souls\, and can easily feel overwhelmed\, helpless and sometimes lost. For some of us it can be hard to settle and meditate. \nHow can such situations be our wake-up call? How can we find equanimity and steadiness—to be like an island in the stormy seas—as in the classic Buddhist metaphor? How can wisdom and compassion that is less personal\, more universal and limitless actually be a source of empowerment that can help us to go out and make a difference? \nStephen will be bringing some of his experiences and reflections after 30 years as a leading dharma teacher in the thick of Middle East conflict. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Margrit Pittman-Polletta \nIn-Person Orientation: Tuesday\, January 6th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, January 13th – March 10th (skips January 20th)\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, February 21st\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street on the 12th Floor \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 45-60 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 46 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates: \nFree Orientation (required): Tuesday\, January 6\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nCourse: Tuesdays\, January 13 – March 10 (skips January 20)\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm\nDaylong: Saturday\, February 21\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $715 – Base $420 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. Email registration@nyimc.org for more info. \nParticipants may register after the orientation for this class takes place\, but must still view a recorded orientation\, complete the pre-class questionnaire and arrange a pre-class interview with the teacher. If would like to register for this course but are not able to make it to the orientation\, please email us at registration@nyimc.org so we can make the necessary arrangements with the teacher. \nRegistration for this program is now closed.
