SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Tim Abshire \nWednesday\, February 4th\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nPlease note: the February 4 session of this series will be taught by Tim Abshire. All other sessions will be taught by Marijke Eliasberg. \nAll are welcome! No previous experience with tai chi is required to join the sessions. You are free to sign up for a single session\, the whole series\, or anything in-between. This series runs from February 4th through February 25th. \nThis offering is part of New York Insight’s Mindful Movement series. \nRegistration:\nPlease register below for one or more sessions in this series. (Please note that the registration price includes a base level of teacher support\, and you will have the opportunity to donate more after the program.) \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: When Sh*t Hits the Fan - Broken Heart Dharma (Three-Part Series)
DESCRIPTION:Online: When Sh*t Hits the Fan – Broken Heart Dharma (Three-Part Series) \nwith Jon Aaron \nPart 1: When Things Fall Apart (February 5th to March 12th\, 2026)\nPart 2: Picking Up The Pieces (April 9th to May 14th\, 2026)\nPart 3: Shattered And Whole (May 21st to June 25th\, 2026) \nThursdays\, 10:00am – 12:00pm ET \n \nThe Buddha’s First Noble Truth clearly states: there is dukkha. This has been translated as un-satisfactoriness\, suffering\, dis-ease\, being out of whack—take your pick! We all know it when we are in it. In other words\, shit happens. In fact\, shit is always happening. We all see it all around us\, and we experience it in many ways. Every now and then\, in addition to moving through a world so prone to breaking our hearts\, our own more personal world might get turned upside down. You lose a loved one\, a job\, a home\, or your body as you once knew it. You take a devastating financial hit. You’re injured in such a way that your life is permanently changed. A relationship ends. Something or someone you’ve counted on your whole life is suddenly gone. Sometimes\, several losses or injuries hit at once or in close succession: when it rains\, it pours! It can feel like the world is falling apart. And in many ways\, it is. In those moments dukkha is not just a concept; we feel it in our bones\, we call out into the night. \nMost of us\, understandably\, are conditioned to push away suffering. To leap into making it better\, or simply not feeling it. To deny it\, to fix it\, to rage at it. I get it. I have those reflexes in me. Our culture can also exacerbate such aversion\, and sell us all kinds of things and services in these moments of desperation. Indeed\, the overwhelming sadness or discombobulation can be paralyzing. \nCompartmentalization\, to some degree\, can be a good survival tactic. To help us still get out of bed\, brush our teeth\, make a meal. And yet\, there is also a path to freedom that awaits in feeling into the dukkha fully and fearlessly. This is not about a dull acceptance\, or the indulgence of self-pity. It’s about the courage to face reality\, to acknowledge our humanity\, and to build from there\, with less delusions\, less attachments to false refuges\, less illusions of safety that lead us astray. \nThose familiar with the Buddhist tradition will have likely come across the teaching of the 12 links\, or nidanas\, which keep us going around and around in cycles of suffering. But in the early Buddhist texts\, there is another set of links\, the positive nidanas\, that set us on to what some have called the Spiral Path to liberation. The first of those links is\, unsurprisingly\, dukkha. Immediately after comes sraddha (faith on that which is reliable\, or confidence). Sraddha is crucial for the awakening process\, yet it depends on suffering in order to arise. How does that work? What does it mean for those of us who may be in the thick of a broken heart? Of life plans suddenly imploding? Of devastating losses? \nDrawing on Pema Chödrön’s cherished book and other resources\, I invite you to join me in a series of three classes to explore these themes. Let’s sit together in the rubble of our lives and see what happens when we don’t turn away. \nWhat the course includes: \n\na period of guided meditation specific to the course theme\na dharma talk\nQ&A and discussion\nsomatic exercises and occasional chanting/mantra practice\nRecording of the talk portion and any readings will be sent to registered participants\n\nOptional Mentoring: \nEvery registrant will also have the option to join the course with an individual mentoring session in each of the sections. \nOptional Retreats: \nAn online Retreat Day will be scheduled after Part 1 (optional)\, and a short retreat after Part 2. \nSliding Scale \nNYI is committed to making these courses easily available\, so we use a sliding scale. Each of the three sections is offered at a sliding scale as follows. \n\nBenefactor $420\nStandard $300\nSupported $180 (please email registration@nyimc.org about payment plan options or scholarships if this is still out of reach).\n\nPlease choose the level of contribution that is most suitable to your situation. \nIf you can commit to the entire series in three parts (18 weeks)\, there is a 20% discount. The full course rate is as follows. \n\nBenefactor $1008\nStandard $720\nSupported $432 (please email registration@nyimc.org about payment plan options or scholarships if this is still out of reach).\n\nEveryone who is registered will receive recordings of the talks and all materials\, even if they miss a session. \nPart 1: When Things Fall Apart (Feb 5 to Mar 12)\nPart 2: Picking Up The Pieces (Apr 9 to May 14)\nPart 3: Shattered And Whole (May 21 to Jun 25) \nSix Thursdays (online) in each series\n10:00 AM–12:00 PM EST / 9:00 AM–11:00 AM CST / 7:00 AM–9:00 AM PST / 3:00 PM–5:00 PM GMT \nRegistration – Part 1\nUse this form if you wish to register only for Part 1: When Things Fall Apart (Feb 5 – Mar 12; 6 sessions). \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n \nRegistration – Full Course\nUse this form if you wish to register for all three parts of this course (Feb 5 – Jun 25; 18 sessions). \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Nervous System Reset - An Introduction to Somatic Meditation
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Nervous System Reset – An Introduction to Somatic Meditation \nwith Kathy Cherry \nThursday\, February 5th\, 2026 | 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET \nIn-Person Location: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn today’s fast-paced and uncertain world\, many of us live in a constant search for safety—grasping at familiar habits\, thoughts\, emotions\, or identities in an effort to feel grounded. Often\, these patterns are driven not by choice\, but by an overactivated nervous system responding to real or perceived threat. \nWithout awareness and support\, this cycle can leave us feeling overwhelmed\, disconnected from our bodies\, and trapped in reactions that no longer serve us. \nThis two-hour evening class introduces a new way forward. Drawing inspiration from the Nadī Sutta (The River) and integrating somatic meditation\, mindfulness practices\, and Somatic Experiencing® techniques\, we will explore how the body’s survival responses are actually expressions of intelligence—attempts to create stability and protection. The “reeds and grasses” in the river become a metaphor for the ways we cling to sensations\, emotions\, thoughts\, and identities when safety feels uncertain. \nThrough guided meditation\, body-based tracking\, gentle movement\, and moments of reflection\, you will learn to recognize these automatic patterns not as problems to fix\, but as signals pointing toward a deeper need for safety\, care\, and connection. By developing a felt sense of safety in the present moment\, the nervous system can begin to reorganize toward greater ease\, clarity\, and choice. \nIn this class\, you will: \n\nStart to understand your stress responses as intelligent attempts to create safety\nLearn simple\, body-based practices to access a felt sense of groundedness and support\nExperience how greater embodiment naturally brings clarity\, resilience\, and spaciousness\n\nJoin us to shift from grasping and survival toward presence\, self-trust\, and a more embodied sense of safety in your daily life. \nThis class is open to all. No prior experience with meditation or Somatic Experiencing® is required. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nIn-Person Registration:\nPlease register below to attend in-person. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! SUMMARY:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:Online: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course \nwith Jon Aaron \n\nOnline Course: Fridays\, February 6th – March 27th\, 2026 | 12:00pm – 2:30pm ET\nOnline Daylong: Sunday\, March 8th\, 2026 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \n \nMindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. \nThis transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more clarity\, joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25-30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 45-60 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 46 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nCourse Dates \nFree Online Orientation: Friday\, January 23 from 12:00pm – 2:30pm ET\nOnline Course: Fridays\, February 6 – March 27 from 12:00pm – 2:30pm ET\nOnline Daylong: Sunday\, March 8 from 9:30am – 5:00pm ET \nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $715 – Base $420 \nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. \nIf you need financial assistance\, we have a limited amount of partial scholarships available. Email registration@nyimc.org for more info. \nParticipants may register after the orientation for this class takes place\, but must still view a recorded orientation\, complete the pre-class questionnaire and arrange a pre-class interview with the teacher. Once you have registered\, the teacher will contact you to make these arrangements. \nSign up for the free orientation on January 23 here. \nRegister for the MBSR Course:\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.

SUMMARY:Online: Transforming Self-Judgment with Lovingkindness
DESCRIPTION:Online: Transforming Self-Judgment with Lovingkindness \nwith Dalya Tamir \nSaturday\, February 7th\, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET \n \nMany of us are familiar with the voice of the inner critic\, also called our inner judge. This is a harsh voice in the mind that scolds us\, corrects us\, and keeps us in check. It might feel like there is someone watching over our shoulders\, pointing out our wrongdoings\, or telling us how to think or behave. \nIn reality\, this judgmental voice is no more than a collection of thoughts in the mind. But when it is not seen and understood\, the inner critic holds the power to pull us down into feelings of guilt\, shame\, and unworthiness. \nIn this half-day retreat we will turn our attention toward our patterns of self-judgment. We will explore both its fleeting and impermanent nature and the power it has over our lives. With the help of Buddhist teacher Dalya Tamir\, you’ll start to notice the messages you receive and internalize from society and those around you—and the ways you hold on to these messages. \nThrough lovingkindness practices we will cultivate the antidotes to the harsh voice of our inner judge and make room for a more compassionate\, wiser self. Freeing ourselves\, even temporarily\, from our harsh inner voice allows for a natural emergence of spaciousness and acceptance of ourselves and others. \nThis retreat will include silent guided meditations\, short dharma talks\, sharing in breakout rooms and in the large circle. \nCome join us for this online half-day retreat to learn how to love\, accept\, and trust yourself. \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. SUMMARY:In-Person: Tai Chi - Meditation in Motion
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Tai Chi – Meditation in Motion \nwith Marijke Eliasberg \nWednesday\, February 11th\, 2026 | 5:00pm – 6:00pm \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nIn the Insight\, or vipassana\, meditation tradition\, we talk a lot about noticing the breath\, but what about the rest of the body? \nIn fact\, tai chi is often referred to as “meditation in motion.” This practice is one of slowing down while still feeling energized\, and learning to relax our muscles while maintaining precision. \nThis practice is well-suited to do before sitting meditation—tai chi is one way to get in touch with the wholeness of the breathing body. Some benefits of tai chi include improved muscle strength\, balance\, and flexibility\, and an increase in energy and focus. \nJoin Marijke Eliasberg\, a certified shifu (teacher) of tai chi\, to reconnect with your body and breath\, and empower yourself with basic tools to help maintain a balanced and healthy mind. Eliasberg is a long-time student of the tai chi Great Grandmaster William C. C. Chen\, and is excited to share the joys of practicing this art with the NYI community.

By honoring what has been lost while staying connected to ourselves and one another\, we discover how grief\, when welcomed\, can deepen our capacity for love\, connection\, and belonging. \nThis workshop is part of The Body Remembers Freedom\, a monthly series that brings together meditation\, dharma\, and embodied practice in a way that is relational\, grounded\, and alive. Each session includes time for meditation and contemplation\, a dharma talk or shared inquiry\, and InterPlay\, a playful and powerful practice using movement\, voice\, storytelling\, and deep listening to access the wisdom of the body. \nParticipants are supported to be: \n\nMore grounded and connected to their bodies and to one another\nMore accountable to themselves and to community\nReconnected to joy\, creativity\, and inner resource\nBetter able to meet life\, and themselves\, with compassion and presence\n\nIn times that can feel scary\, overwhelming\, or isolating\, these gatherings offer a place to put the phone down\, release accumulated stress\, and reconnect with what feels trustworthy and alive. We gather to remember the sacred in ordinary experience and to be held in the support of community. \nNo experience with meditation or movement is required. You are welcome exactly as you are\, with curiosity and a willingness to be present. \nThe Body Remembers Freedom is offered monthly on the first or second Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm ET and is offered in a hybrid format. During the InterPlay portion of the evening\, Linds Roberts guides participants joining on Zoom\, while Kaira Jewel guides those attending in person. The full group then comes back together for the closing practice. You are welcome to register for a single session\, select multiple dates\, or join the full series at a discounted rate. \nSessions are recorded and shared with all registrants after the program\, so you are welcome to sign up even if you cannot attend live. \nRegister for one session or the full series (at a discount!) below.\n2026: February 12 | March 12 | April 9 | May 7 | June 18 | July 9 | August 6 \nIn-Person Registration:\nIn-Person Single Session\nIn-Person Full Series\n  \nOnline (Zoom) Registration:\nOnline Single Session\nOnline Full Series\n  \nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:In-Person: Cringe-Free Love - A Valentine’s Day of Awakening
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Cringe-Free Love – A Valentine’s Day of Awakening \nwith Brian Simmons \nSaturday\, February 14th\, 2026 | 12:00pm – 2:00pm ET (1 hour of teaching\, followed by 1 hour of community time and refreshments) \nLocation: New York Insight at 115 West 29th Street\, 12th Floor \n \nMeditators are often imagined as endlessly kind\, gentle\, and polished—but in reality\, love doesn’t always flow on demand. Judgment often shows up faster than compassion\, especially toward ourselves. \nThis Valentine’s Day\, join NYI teacher Brian Simmons for an afternoon that reframes love entirely. Instead of treating it as a moral achievement or emotional performance\, we’ll explore Loving Awareness—a basic quality of our own nature\, present even when kindness or compassion feels out of reach. \nThrough guided meditation and discussion\, we’ll meet self-criticism\, difficult emotions\, and habitual resistance—not as problems to fix\, but as experiences to observe with openness. From this perspective\, forgiveness\, compassion\, and even healing arise naturally when we stop striving to be “better” versions of ourselves and start noticing what’s already here. \nNo need to love Valentine’s Day—or even be familiar with loving-kindness practice—to join. Skepticism is welcome. Step into an honest\, grounded experience of love\, free from clichés and cringe. \nIn addition to the teaching\, we invite you to stay for homemade scones\, chocolate\, and unhurried social time—whether you arrive as a couple\, with a friend\, or as a solo practitioner\, all are welcome to share in sangha. \nRegistration:\nPlease choose your registration level below. Optionally\, you are invited to bring a friend for free! To register your plus-one\, simply select a free ticket at the bring-a-friend level in addition to yours. Your free guest can check in by giving your name at the door. \nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window. \n\nVolunteering \nAll of our programs rely on volunteers to support our teachers and staff with various tasks and responsibilities. SUMMARY:Online: You Are Not Your Fault - Meeting ADHD with Mindfulness\, Wisdom\, and Compassion
DESCRIPTION:Online: You Are Not Your Fault – Meeting ADHD with Mindfulness\, Wisdom\, and Compassion \nwith Mark Coleman \nSunday\, February 15th\, 2026 | 2:00pm – 5:00pm ET \n \nDo you have challenges with focus and have a hard time with time and task management? Do you struggle with emotional hypersensitivity or frustration tolerance? Do you find it hard to follow through on tasks or commitments\, or to be reliable and consistent? \nIf so\, you are not alone. Millions of people suffer daily with conditions associated with these executive function challenges. Though commonly referred to as ADHD\, these symptoms are often exacerbated by our complex\, fast-paced\, high-tech lives. \nSuch conditions often leave people with a sense of self-doubt\, shame\, or unworthiness. \nThe good news is that with mindfulness\, compassion\, and with the application of skillful techniques\, it is possible to understand and function more effectively with care and wisdom. \nOver the course of this half-day retreat we’ll explore navigating these challenges\, how they interrupt our functioning\, and how we can meet ourselves with wisdom\, forgiveness and self-compassion. \nHere is a quote from a recent student about this offering: \n“Recently I attended your online class on ADHD. \nThat day changed my life. \nI attended the class with my adult son (I am 76\, he is 43). My son suffers from severe ADHD\, and for years I have attempted\, with limited success\, to support\, understand and help him with this matter. I had hoped your course might give me some new ideas. Instead it opened my eyes and heart to the true nature of my son’s disability. This new awareness created a bond between my son and I that we had been unable to forge previously. We ended the day crying in each other’s arms. \nI cannot thank you enough for this gift. I send you deep formal bows of gratitude\, love and respect.” \nNote: This program will be recorded. The recording will be sent to all registrants after the program\, so please feel free to sign up even if you cannot join in real time. \nOnline Registration:\nPlease register below. If you are able\, registering at the “Supporter” level enables others to attend at the “Subsidized” level. Thank you for your generosity! \nBring a Buddy: If you are a member of our Circle of Friends\, you’re invited to bring a Dharma buddy to this program for no additional cost.
