IMS Urban Retreats at New York Insight

New York Insight is proud to announce the pilot year of Urban Retreats in partnership with the Insight Meditation Society (IMS), the renowned retreat center based in Barre, MA, founded by Sharon Salzberg, Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfield.

Together, we are launching a new series of non-residential retreats designed to support meditators in the New York Metro area who seek an intensive IMS practice experience closer to home. IMS Urban Retreats are led by IMS teachers and feature many of the same qualities of retreat structure and practice experience offered in residential retreats at IMS.

Beginning this fall, our pilot year will include at least four weekend retreats that are a natural extension of IMS’s core mission to offer refuge for all who seek freedom of mind and heart. We recognize that for many, the time, travel and expense involved in longer residential retreats is a serious challenge. IMS’s Urban Retreats are designed to address those needs.

These retreats will support the practices of noble silence, sitting and walking meditation and teacher dana.  For the duration of each retreat, participants will be expected not to engage in any form of verbal or non-verbal communication including evenings when retreatants are at home.  Each day of silent practice will alternate periods of sitting and walking meditation. The teachers will offer meditation instruction and dharma talks about the Buddha’s teachings, and time permitting, participants will meet with teachers in small groups or individually for suggestions about how to work with their individual meditation challenges.  At the end of the Retreat, silence is broken with opportunities to share experiences with other participants.

The IMS Urban Retreats will range from 2-3 days often spanning holiday weekends to accommodate work schedules.

These programs are made possible with major support from the Laura S. Rodgers Fund of the Community Foundation of New Jersey.
