SUMMARY:In-Person: Finding Joy in the Refuge of Uncertainty

Is it even possible to treat this uncertainty as another kind of refuge? \nThis day of practice will integrate meditation\, chanting\, movement and dialogue to explore the nature of uncertainty. In the context of the three Refuges of Buddha\, Dharma\, and Sangha we discover how uncertainty itself can become a refuge. \nRegistration:\nPlease register at the highest level that your generosity offers.\nExplanations of levels follow below.\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has strehttps://www.nyimc.org/wp-admin/post-new.php?post_type=tribe_events#amlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:In-Person and Online: Cultivating Joy in the Refuge of Uncertainty
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Online: Cultivating Joy in the Refuge of Uncertainty\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \nThursdays\, September 21st – November 16th\, 2023 (skipping November 2nd) | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\n \nIn-Person Location: New York Zendo at 223 E 67th St in New York\, NY\n \n\n \nWe live in what can be described as a “poly-crisis” moment\, with multiple threats that all seem to be existential: climate change\, numerous wars\, failing democratic norms\, A.I. gone wild\, widening social inequities\, extreme polarization\, etc. \nMany of us feel this deeply\, physically\, and for some\, very materially as well. Sometimes this compounds the smaller-scale\, yet no less dramatic\, crises in our lives. The mind tumbles into catastrophizing and what some call “horrified anxiety” – a near enemy of karuna\, compassion.  \nIn fact\, every moment is uncertain. The Buddhist tradition tells us that everything arises from causes and conditions. Conditioned things are impermanent and lack any solid\, fixed nature\, which means that everything is always on shaky ground… and\, on the upside\, much is possible. We can experience that non-fixedness as dukkha (suffering)\, but that’s not the end of the story. Non-fixedness is also infinite potential\, possibility\, creativity. \n \nWhen we tap into that\, joy can become part of the experience of uncertainty by loosening our attachment to outcomes and to certainty itself. \nIn his lifetime\, the Buddha experienced tremendous losses\, genocide\, and the social transformation of the world he knew. It’s possible that all this turmoil contributed to his deep insight. His transformative teachings on emptiness\, karma\, and equanimity have much to offer to our moment.  \nJoin us for a new in-person and online eight-week course with New York Insight Teacher Jon Aaron exploring how we can live with uncertainty\, not from a place of fear but with buoyancy\, curiosity\, and ease. We’ll discover how the teachings provide practical ways of coping with these various threats and how we can cultivate joy in uncertainty instead of battling it in the doomed hope of clinging to certainties that ultimately will not last.\n \nEach class will include meditation practices\, dharma teachings\, and discussion. Some prior meditation experience is required\, as well as some understanding of basic Buddhist teachings. \n \nRegistration Fees include Teacher Support\nNew York Insight Meditation Center has streamlined the registration fee levels. SUMMARY:In-Person: Exploring the Power of Love - InsightOut LGBTQI Gathering
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Exploring the Power of Love – InsightOut LGBTQI Gathering\n \nwith Elaine Retholtz\n \nMonday\, March 27th\, 2023 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm ET\n \nLocation: New York Zendo (Shobo-Ji Zendo) at 223 East 67th street\, New York City\n \n\n  \nCome join us for meditation and discussion to meet and socialize with other LGBTQI practitioners. \nNew York Insight Teacher Elaine Retholtz will present a dharma talk titled Exploring the Power of Love based on the quote by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr: \n“Power without love is reckless and abusive\, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. \nPower at its best is love implementing the demands of justice\, and justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” \nOur community is open to students of all Buddhist traditions\, as well as those who are in the beginning stages of exploring their meditation practice and have an interest in the Dharma. All those who identify as LGBTQI are welcome. \nWe gather to form a multicultural community in which we can support each other in our practice with a commitment toward social change. \nFee by donation: Suggested starting donation is $15 but whatever you offer is greatly appreciated and no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. \nPlease RSVP\nIf you are registering via a mobile device such as a phone or tablet\, you can scroll right and left and up and down within the below form if it is partially obscured or cut off.\nCLICK HERE to open the registration form in a new browser window.\nPlease contact registration@nyimc.org if you need assistance. \n\n \nNYI’s Covid Protocol for In-Person Indoors Programs:\nWe continue to strongly encourage all Sangha members to take advantage of vaccination against Covid and influenza\, including booster shots.\nAll participants must register in advance before attending the program.\nWe ask that each Sangha member carefully and honestly assess their health prior to heading to class\, and ask that anyone who is even mildly symptomatic (including sore throat\, cough\, sinus/nasal congestion\, loss of smell\, fever\, or unexplained body ache or fatigue) stay home. Symptoms may precede a positive Covid test result by several days\, or may indicate influenza or other infections that will not be detected by standard testing.\nWhile we appreciate the hardship of missing an event that you may have made significant sacrifices to be able to attend\, this is the single most important precaution you can take to protect both yourself and your fellow Sangha members.\nAll participants are strongly encouraged to wear masks during these classes.\nDisclaimer:\nProcedures adhere to current CDC\, NY State\, NYC\, and New York Zendo Shobo-Ji guidelines.\nChanges may be applied at any time\, based on these third-party guidelines. \nAll in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \nFor the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell.\nIf you have questions about your registration (cancellation policy\, membership discount\, email confirmation\, etc.)\, please read our FAQs. SUMMARY:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course
DESCRIPTION:In-Person: Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Course\n \nwith Jon Aaron\n \n\nOnline Orientation: Ended. Contact registration@nyimc.org\nIn-Person Course: Tuesdays\, February 21st – April 11th\, 2023 | 6:30pm – 9:00pm ET\nIn-Person Daylong: Saturday\, March 25th\, 2023 | 9:30am – 5:00pm ET\n\n \nLocation: New York Zendo (Shobo-ji) at 223 East 67th St\, NYC\n \n\n  \nCourse Description:\nNew York Insight offers ongoing classes in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, the ground-breaking and time-tested\, scientifically researched program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 for the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This transformative course is suited for those coming to meditation for the first time or for experienced meditators who realize they have not yet integrated these practices fully into their lives. The teaching of MBSR at NY Insight is offered by seasoned MBSR teachers\, most of whom are certified by the University of Massachusetts Center for Mindfulness. All of our teachers have decades of meditation practice and study and between them have taught well over 200 cycles of this seminal 8-Week curriculum. \nWhat To Expect:\nMBSR uses meditation\, mindful yoga\, and inquiry/discussion as a way of exploring the habits of the mind to discover how these patterns of reactivity become a major cause of stress and where we could intervene to change them. MBSR helps participants learn to alter their relationship with each moment of their lives and through it derive more joy\, fulfillment\, and meaning from their lives. Classes usually have 25 – 30 participants but may be smaller. The course is experiential: by paying attention to what arises in daily and class practice\, and through exploring the challenges that arise and how these are met\, a supportive and safe container is created for students to feel connected and be inspired. Participants are supported by recorded guided meditations and are expected to practice 30-45 minutes of daily formal meditation as well as various informal practices. \nBenefits of MBSR:\nResearch over the past 38 years indicates that a majority of people who complete this program report a greater ability to cope more effectively with short and long term stressful situations; an increased ability to relax\, lasting decreases in physical and psychological symptoms; reduction in pain levels and enhanced ability to cope with chronic pain and most importantly a greater energy and enthusiasm for life. Some of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: Practical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\, Methods for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\, Gentle full-body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\, The ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\, The ability to face change and difficult times in your life with greater ease\, Greater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia. \nSome of the Skills People Learn in MBSR Courses: \n\nPractical coping skills to improve the ability to handle stressful situations\nTechniques for being physically and mentally relaxed and at ease\nGentle full body conditioning exercises to strengthen the body and release muscular tension\nThe ability to be increasingly aware of the interplay of mind and body in health and illness\nThe ability to face change and difficult times in life with greater ease\nGreater ability to decrease the physical\, mental and emotional effects of the societal stressors of sexism\, racism\, homophobia\, xenophobia and gender inequity among many other challenges\n\nSliding Scale Course Fee: Sustaining $600 – Base $450\nPlease choose your rate mindfully and be as generous as possible so that NYI can continue to offer financial assistance to those in need of other NYI offerings. SUMMARY:Postponed: Insight 101 - Six Week Beginners Meditation Course
DESCRIPTION:Postponed: Insight 101 – Six Week Beginners Meditation Course\n \nwith Lani Miller\n \nWednesdays\, June 22nd – July 27th\, 2022 | 10:00am – 12:00pm ET\nDue to unforeseen circumstances\, the program has been postponed. \n \n\n \nLocation: New York Zendo at 223 East 67th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. \nThere are many types of meditation and many reasons why one might be drawn to it. Meditation can be a powerful way to reduce stress. It can also help us to understand and relate to challenging feelings in healthier ways. \nAlong with these possible benefits\, and perhaps most importantly\, meditation offers us the opportunity to learn to be fully present and open to whatever is happening in our own experience\, just as it is. Through this kind attention\, happiness and peace grow in our lives; we learn to be kinder and more accepting of ourselves and bring this awareness into our relationships and the world we share. \nIf you’ve been wanting to learn how to meditate or refresh and renew the meditation practice you already have\, we invite you to join this six-week meditation course to explore the practice of Insight (Vipassana) meditation in a warm\, supportive environment. \nWe will emphasize experiential practice\, including instructions for sitting and walking meditation\, and explore how we can bring this practice of presence into our everyday lives. \nClasses will include time for practice\, talks\, guidance from the teacher\, and plenty of time for sharing and Q&A. \nNYI’s Covid Protocol for In-Person Indoors Programs:\n•All participants must be fully vaccinated and have received a Booster shot – Proof of vaccination and booster is required.\n•All participants must register in advance before attending the program.\n•All participants must wear masks at all times. \nDisclaimer:\n•Procedures adhere to current CDC\, NY State\, NYC\, and New York Zendo guidelines.\n•Changes may be applied at any time\, based on CDC guidelines.\n•For the health and safety of our staff\, teachers\, and community\, please do not come onsite if you are feeling unwell.\n•All in-person programs may become online programs if circumstances dictate. \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please contact registration@nyimc.org. \n  \nAbout Site Admin View all posts by Site Admin
