Online: Mindful Ikebana – The Contemplative Art of Flower Arranging
with Anjie Cho
Sundays, January 18th – February 1st, 2026 | 10:00am – 1:00pm ET
Join us for a special three-week online course exploring ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement, as a contemplative practice that works directly with attention, form, and the natural beauty of flowers.
Working with living materials offers a direct way of engaging impermanence, balance, and form—qualities that also sit at the heart of meditation practice.
In this three-week online course, Anjie Cho introduces ikebana as a contemplative art that unfolds through sustained, hands-on practice. Offered in this extended, multi-week format for the first time, the course allows participants to work slowly and deliberately, returning to core principles with increasing clarity and care.
Rather than a single-session workshop, this structure creates more time and space to practice at home, observe what emerges, and deepen understanding through feedback from the teacher and group. Each week builds on the last through repetition, reflection, and guided inquiry.
Participants are introduced to foundational ikebana forms, beginning with a freestyle Moribana arrangement, moving into the structural principles of Heaven, Earth, and Human, and concluding with Nageire, an upright and expressive style. Between sessions, participants create arrangements in their own space and share them with the class for viewing and optional feedback.
A central focus of the course is learning how to work with what is available. Participants source flowers and natural materials locally, developing an intuitive understanding of how palettes come together through relationship, contrast, and restraint—addressing one of the most common questions in ikebana practice.
This workshop has long filled quickly when offered in person. The online format makes it possible to welcome a wider group of participants while also offering a deeper learning experience over time.
This program is open to all levels. No prior experience with ikebana or visual art is required. All sessions will be recorded and shared with registrants.
Materials
Flower and equipment are NOT provided. Basic equipment will support your at-home practice after the first class. Many participants will already have suitable containers and scissors, though a kenzan may need to be purchased. Materials can be ordered directly from Anjie’s website or through her Amazon store. All equipment will be discussed in more detail during the first session.
Note: This program will be recorded. Recordings will be sent to all registrants after each session, so you are welcome to register even if you cannot attend one or more sessions live.
